After a lame 1-3 showing in the opening week of the postseason, it is time to spice things up for the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Along with my regular ATS pick, I will also do over-under picks for each of the four games.
New Orleans Saints +8 at Seattle Seahawks (45.5)
In an attempt to simulate conditions inside Qwest Field, the Saints painted the Seahawks’ logo on their practice field this week. They could have moved their practices to Dallas this week and gotten Seattle weather, I’m sure the Cowboys would let them borrow their facilities.
New Orleans finally won their first-ever road playoff game last week, but I don’t see things shaking out much differently than the Monday night debacle against the Seahawks six weeks ago. Actually, it will shake in Seattle. The Seahawks remain the class of the NFL until further notice.
ATS PICK: Seahawks/Over
Indianapolis Colts +7.5 at New England Patriots (51.5)
This time last year I was the only person on the planet to pick the Baltimore Ravens to win on a 10-degree day in Denver, and did so because they were my preseason Super Bowl Pick.
Likewise, I’m going to continue to roll with my preseason pick for this year. Besides, as a wise man once said, the Patriots are ripe for the picking.
Either the torch gets passed from Tom Brady to Andrew Luck late Saturday night, or Luck will next be seen in an interview segment during the Pro Bowl making reference to idiot bloggers.
ATS PICK: Colts/Under
San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers (PICK ‘EM/41.5)
I guess Ric Flair has delivered the Gipper speech for the new millennium, taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the 49ers in their Appleton, Wis., hotel. As Niners tackle Anthony Davis eloquently stated, Appleton remains of little use to mankind unless one plans to make a lucrative career in the toilet paper production industry.
As a result, Nature Boy is now as welcome in his native Charlotte as Art Modell’s ghost in Cleveland or Derek Fisher in Salt Lake City. Until now considered Charlotte’s largest non-NASCAR cultural icon in the Carolinas, Flair sold out in making the ultimate heel turn.
I guess Flair will next be seen with Jim Harbaugh and Tom Crean at Bohemian Grove.
ATS PICK: 49ers/Over
San Diego Chargers +9 at Denver Broncos (54.5)
A man in the Pennsylvania Correctional system filed an injunction this week in an attempt to get the Chargers removed from the NFL playoffs. So he thinks he is the one to overthrow Roger Goodell?
It was a valiant try, he will now likely spend this weekend in solitary confinement and be spared the agony of seeing Philip Rivers for another three and a half hours.
The Chargers won at Denver on a Thursday night a month ago, but freak past occurrences do not guarantee future results. Look for Peyton Manning to roll and shake his postseason demons.
At least for one week, until Andrew Luck and the Colts get a hold of him.
ATS PICK: Broncos/Over
