Earlier this hour, Josh Hamilton spoke to the media about the reports that broke last night indicating he’d been drinking Monday night at a Dallas bar. Here is a link to the full transcript of Hamilton’s statement, which he spoke without notes.
Quick note: The initial draft of this post that was published was done so under the assumption that Hamilton drinking Monday night was fact, as it was reported here by the Dallas Morning News. A report this morning (see bottom of article) casts at least some doubt on the veracity of the claims that Hamilton was drinking. I’ve updated the post in certain areas to reflect this ambiguity, though the tone and ultimate message remains the same regardless.
You have probably heard by now that Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was spotted at a Dallas bar on Monday night, reportedly drinking alcohol.
I thought about it a lot last night and this morning, so here are a few scattered thoughts on the biggest non-Super Bowl story of the day.
It’s been a busy 24 hours in the football world.
Mike McQueary provided some disturbing but important (and damning) testimony about Jerry Sandusky; the Sam Hurd drug saga continued to unfold; and Adrian Peterson explained one of his motivations for returning to the field.
Sam Hurd is currently involved in one of the more ridiculous stories in recent memory: A professional athlete making millions of dollars per year to run around and catch a ball has been accused of running a multi-million dollar drug ring.
The details of the story are what make it unbelievable, especially considering the amount of time that cable TV has dedicated to the “art” of drug dealing in the last 10 years. Sam Hurd obviously never watched The Wire. If he had, he would have found very simple ways to avoid getting into trouble.
As if injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, losing three straight games after winning five straight, and watching the playoff hopes of the Chicago Bears become more and more distant with each passing week wasn’t enough…news just broke that Bears’ receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on drug charges.
This isn’t the “caught with a a gram or two of marijuana” drug arrest. This is a HUGE drug arrest (details here), one that not only includes marijuana but cocaine and LARGE amounts of both. Like $575,000 worth of cocaine. It’s become clear that playing in the NFL was secondary to Hurd, and it it will likely cost him and the league big time.
