Best impersonation of Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson: Melvin Gordon’s record-shattering performance against Nebraska
Even by his extremely lofty standards, Melvin Gordon’s performance against Nebraska was downright jaw-dropping. Hell, his sheer domination of the Cornhuskers was the straw that broke the camel’s back and ended Bo Pelini’s tenure in Lincoln.
On a snowy November evening in Madison, Gordon ran for 408 yards and four touchdowns on just 25 carries, breaking the FBS record for most rushing yards in a game set by TCU’s LaDainian Tomlinson in 1999. He had six rushes of 35 or more yards, accounting for 298 of his 408 yards. And oh, by the way, he only needed three quarters to rewrite the record books.
Gordon broke Tomlinson’s record, which had stood for 15 years, so naturally Oklahoma freshman Samaje Perine broke Gordon’s record the very next week by rushing for 427 yards on 24 carries against the Kansas Jayhawks.
