Pickin’ On the Big Ten, Week 3: All Thy Sins Laid Bare

Penn State at Rutgers

James Franklin Penn State

How are the Nittany Lions and Scarlet Knights doing so far?

Hey, they’re both 2-0, and that’s not nothing. Rutgers proved it hasn’t fully made the transition to Big Ten culture yet since it went to the West Coast and won a game. Its win over Washington State is easily the Big Ten’s best out-of-conference win this season, which is good, since last week’s edging of Howard was unimpressive. (Howard got shut out by Akron, 41-0.) Penn State’s out-of-conference, out-of-country win over Central Florida may wind up being impressive at the end of the season but I’ll withhold judgement for now. Getting the postseason ban lifted immediately is a great thing for the Nits, but there are still 10¬†games between now and the postseason.

This is the first of those games. Rutgers is hyping this matchup with an almost insane ferocity, trying to get a rivalry going with its neighbor to the west. I’m not sure the Scarlet Knights are actually any good. I can say the same about Penn State. I feel confident that the Nits are the better team, though.

Pick: Penn State 30, Rutgers 20
