Western Michigan at Purdue
I don’t know the best way to frame Purdue’s situation here: whether the Boilermakers really need a win, or really need to avoid a loss. I’m going with the latter, because losing to a team whose coach generated all kinds of attention last season but only managed a single win — against UMass, by one point — would be devastating for the entire program. Really devastating, given that UMass is at least an FBS opponent. Purdue’s only win last season was against Indiana State.
Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck says he’s going to be “more stable” this season. Maybe not in this game. I think the Broncos can run with the Boilermakers for a half, maybe three quarters, but eventually you’ll see regression to the mean as Purdue pulls away and Darrell Hazell finally gets his first win over an FBS opponent at Purdue.
Pick: Purdue 28, Western Michigan 17
