Pickin’ On the Big Ten, Week 1: Appalachian State and Other Disasters

Appalachian State at Michigan

Michigan Appalachian State

You don’t want a serious prediction of this game. Whether you’re a Michigan fan, a Michigan hater, or completely neutral on the topic of Michigan, you don’t want a serious prediction of this game. You want to remember 2007, when the haughty Wolverines, No. 5 in the nation, lost to an FCS team in the season opener, and you want to know if it can happen again. You want to know if you’re going to see the Internet covered with message board posts titled “MICHIGAN LOSES TO FCS SQUAD AND HAS TO WRITE THEM A BIG CHECK ANYWAY.” You really want to know if that can happen again.

It can’t, for several reasons. First, the 2007 Appalachian State team was the defending FCS national champion. The 2014 Appalachian State is coming off a 4-8 season. Granted, they showed many signs of life on the way to 4-8, but 4-8 is still 4-8.

Second, you won’t see those posts because App State isn’t an FCS team any more, it’s now a member of the Sun Belt.

Third, given Michigan’s trajectory since that dreadful day, I’m not sure a Wolverine loss would be all that surprising. If it happened. Which it won’t. But remember, I didn’t think it would happen in 2007 either.

Pick: Michigan 34, Appalachian State 13
