Pickin’ On the Big Ten, Week 1: Appalachian State and Other Disasters

Youngstown State at Illinois

Tim Beckman

I can’t believe this game isn’t getting more attention. Jim Tressel is only the last Big Ten coach to win a national title and yeah, there was that bit of unpleasantness when he lied to the NCAA, but the man has served his time and now he makes his triumphant return to the sidelines of the school that gave him his start as a head coach, and wouldn’t you know the first team he’ll coach against is a team from the Big T —- wait, he’s not the football coach? They hired him to do what?

Well, then never mind. Tim Beckman may have his flaws but the man made his bones beating up on Ohio’s smaller public universities. Who knows if Wes Lunt is the player the Illini to start slouching towards relevance again, but I can’t see Illinois losing this game.

Pick: Illinois 38, Youngstown State 24
