With more teams (18), more spectators (approximately 1 million combined each summer) and more games (72) than any other summer college wooden bat league, the Northwoods League remains popular as ever among enthusiastic fans. Expansion occurred in 2013 (Kalamazoo), 2014 (Kenosha) and there are discussions about a new team in Bismarck, North Dakota, at some point.

With franchises predominantly located in Minnesota (six) and Wisconsin (eight), two clubs in Michigan, one in Iowa and another in Western Ontario, the 21-year-old league counts alumni including current MLB stars Allen Craig, Brandon CrawfordAndre EthierCurtis Granderson Chris SaleMax ScherzerJordan ZimmermanBen Zobrist and others.
