[tps_header]Least Valuable Player: Dion Phaneuf, Toronto Maple Leafs[/tps_header]
It doesn’t really seem fair to throw a single player under the bus for Toronto’s late-season collapse, but Dion Phaneuf definitely should be called out for his role in the team’s fall from grace. After signing a seven-year contract extension worth about $50 million in late December, the Maple Leafs captain’s play has been extremely disappointing.
In 80 games this year, Phaneuf scored just eight goals and recorded 31 points. By comparison, he notched nine goals and 28 points in 48 games during last year’s lockout-shortened season. While Toronto faltering certainly shouldn’t be blamed solely on Phaneuf, his contract and status as captain called for much better results than he was able to produce.
