The Pick-Up Artist:
Fantasy Football Week 1 Waiver Wire Pickups and Advice

The drafts are done and the games start tomorrow. Yes, it’s fantasy football season once again.

Hopefully your draft went well enough that you’re just reading this out of obsession instead of necessity. But if you really messed up your draft, I’m here to help.

We’ll be taking a look at the players available in over 50% of Yahoo and FOX leagues that shouldn’t be, so all of your competitors’ omissions will become your gain.

Let’s get to the nitty gritty:

Waiver Wire Pickups

Russell Wilson, QB, SEA (38% owned in Yahoo!, 24.2% FOX)

With Matt Flynn taking his rightful place on the bench, Seahawks fans are in for an exciting season.

Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson has gone from overlooked draft prospect to beating out high-priced signee Matt Flynn as the starting QB in Seattle.

While Marshawn Lynch ensures this will be a predominantly running offense, Wilson has talented options in Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Braylon Edwards, and Golden Tate. While he’s no Cam Newton, Wilson does have good mobility and will be a positive contributor with some rushing numbers.

He should finish behind RGIII and Andrew Luck in 2012, but he has the ability to be competitive with the first two picks. His upside is a Top 12 Fantasy QB. If you have Joe Flacco or Ryan Fitzpatrick, make the switch.

Daniel Thomas, RB, MIA (17% Yahoo!, 47.7% FOX)

Can someone explain that split between Yahoo! Players and FOX players?

Daniel Thomas is the definition of “post-hype sleeper.” A whole lot of people were burned last season thinking he’d be “the guy” in Miami. Reggie Bush is Option A, but Thomas should get his share of touches, especially on the goal line. Major TD vulture potential.

Naturally, should anything happen to Bush, Thomas could be on the cusp of big things.

Kendall Wright, WR, TEN (42% Yahoo!, 40.8% FOX)

With Kenny Britt suspended the first game of the season, Wright should see a lot of snaps for the Titans.

He’s the type of receiver with a ton of big-play upside, and he has looked good with Jake Locker. Nate Washington and Jared Cook will draw most of the attention off Wright, as will the use of play-action with Chris Johnson.

Need an extra sprinkle of mojo? The Titans drew New England and their awful secondary in Week 1. If you have a hole, Wright’s your man.

Denver, D/ST (16% Yahoo!, 20.6% FOX)

Did everyone completely forget exactly why Tim Tebow made the playoffs last year? Save your passé references to his Christianity; it was the amazing performance put forth by the Bronc’’s defense last season.

The defense could be even better due to having Peyton Manning. Hear me out! With Manning on the offensive side, the Broncos will more likely be playing with the lead instead of punching from behind, meaning they can take a few more risks. That means even more sacks for Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil.

I’d grab the Broncos in any format. I honestly believe they have top 5 Defense upside.

It’s still Week 1. Don’t over-manage just because you’re excited.

I’ll be back next week to help you patch up those 0-1 sinking ships and help protect those undefeated seasons.
