March Madness 2011: Four Upset Picks That Could Bust Brackets

march-madness-upset-picks

Selection Sunday has come and gone, and the madness is about ready to begin.

The brackets were revealed with an interesting panel that included the constantly smiling Seth Davis and the always honest Charles Barkley, and while watching the selection show, I saw four games that I believe can really shake up the brackets.

First Four TV Schedule and Announcer Assignments – Plus a Final Word on Tourney Snubs

first-four-tv-schedule-announcers-uab-clemson-usc-vcu

The new feature of this year’s tournament is the “First Four”. It was created to allow more teams into the tournament that theoretically deserved to be in it. It also serves to eliminate a few extra 16 seeds early on.

Supposedly, the addition of three new teams in the tournament was supposed to end the post-Selection Show ranting about teams that were snubbed. In reality, only controversy has resulted from these extra teams.

In the post, we provide the TV schedule and announcers assignments for the four “First Four” games and then take one final quick look at the biggest tourney snubs, with the benefit of 36 hours of perspective.

Week 2 College Football Picks by KAC360

My college football picking season started last week on the usual note, under .500. 7-11-1 to be exact.

And I was reminded way too often why I’m so glad I don’t put money on these things. LSU (-6 ½) had an easy cover over what was left of the North Carolina Tar Heels, only to see UNC score twice in the waning minutes and darn near win outright.

Virginia Tech +2 points?? No problem, yet they lose by three.

Missouri -12?? They’ll settle for winning by ten.

Some couldn’t order these results any better at Buffalo Wild Wings…

Tennessee Student Perspective: Kiffin Burns UT, Students Burn Back

[Editor's note: Happy to have our buddy J-Dools, a student at the University of Tennessee, back with a new piece of content. I wonder what inspired him to write today...]

Lane Kiffin showed himself to be no more than a “Trojan Coach.” For those of you who don’t understand the ancient Greek metaphor, simply, Kiffin is a joke.

In a shocking and sudden move yesterday, Lane Kiffin announced he would be leaving the University of Tennessee and take the head coaching job at USC. The move capped off a string of negative events for UT athletics and left students confused and furious.

Bottom line, Kiffin is a snake and the University of Tennessee got bit.

WWSC: The Impending Nose Dive of Pete Carroll’s Reputation

[Editor's Note: What follows is the first in a new series of regular posts that you will start to see here on MSF called Wendell Willkie's Spam Cleansing (WWSC for short).

Throughout the day I participate in email conversations with friends about hot sports topics. One of my friends in particular is very active in these conversations. This is that friend.]

Yahoo Sports is suggesting NCAA will release the findings concerning their USC probe around Feb 20.  Pete Carroll’s seemingly sudden move to Seattle failed to raise red flags for anyone besides us [on email chain]?

Please.

College Football: Big Game Blow Out

posted by KVB

I tailgated with my brother and father then went to the Purdue-Oregon game in West Lafayette Saturday afternoon and watched the usual tank job by the Boilers. Quoting my dad after the game (an Ohio State grad, current Purdue Employee), “That is why I stopped getting season tickets.”

I also saw more of the norm from Curtis Painter, wobbly deep balls being intercepted, ten yard out passes bouncing off the turf in front of the receiver. Other things bothered me about the game like the near ten thousand empty seats but that is another post by itself. So after watching both Oregon and Purdue play like the kids in Varsity Blues when they were hungover from being at a strip club all night; I was ready to watch the Ohio State versus USC clash in prime time on ABC.

Then I saw Beanie Wells in red sweatpants and no pads (left) on the sidelines and I immediately stop being excited for the game.

#5 OHIO STATE @ #1 USC

posted by KVB

I waited until Friday to post this preview of the clash in the coliseum. Mostly because the X-factor in this game is the health of Beanie Wells. He plays effective and gets his normal 20 carries than Ohio State wins. If he cannot play or plays ineffective because of the nagging foot injury, USC will win…Big. [Read more...]

  1. Michigan – 877
  2. Texas – 843
  3. Notre Dame – 837
  4. Nebraska – 825 (I think I had their win total miscalculated before, if you’ve been keeping track.)
  5. Ohio State – 818
  6. T – Penn State – 810
  7. T – Alabama – 810
  8. Oklahoma – 797 (I think I had the OU total miscalculated as well. Damn Big 12.)
  9. Tennessee – 782
  10. USC – 773

__________

Now back to KVB’s original post:

Thee! Ohio State University Buckeyes take the field against Frank Solich’s Ohio University Bobcats this weekend. A win could mark the program’s 800th victory. They would be the fifth team to enter the a tradition-rich fraternity of 800 win programs after Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, and Nebraska (see graphic below).

My man Beanie Wells seems to be feeling better and better as the days go on and we should see him back in action in Los Angeles against USC. By the way, Southern Cal is number 10 on this list with 754 wins. The home and hocollege football logome scheduling trend is what creates these great early season matchups. Ohio State-Texas a few years ago was a memorable top ten battle in both years. Now Ohio State and USC. But there are future matchups on the Buckeyes schedule that could definately make or break national title hopes and have the preseason hype we all love…especially with the likes of the Terelle Pryor years coming up. Check this impressive list below for tOSU:
