The Majesty of the Slam Dunk, in Super Slo-Mo

First off, credit where it is due: I just read this post by Barry Petchesky of Deadspin, and I thank him for alerting me to the videos below.

I don’t know about you, but I sat riveted during the Slam Dunk contest. I was turned off by the obvious Kia product placement at the end, and the slimy feeling that the final result was predetermined, but that should take nothing away from the spectacular feats of athleticism achieved by DeMar DeRozan, Serge Ibaka, JaVale McGee, and of course Blake Griffin.

In fact, the dunks turned in by these high flying artists were so good, so jaw-dropping, and so majestic, that there is really only one possible way to make them better: put ‘em in super slow motion. And that’s just what the NBA did.

Video: Nate Robinson Proves He is the Kryptonite to Dwight Howard’s Superman

In the ultimate Big Man v Little Man battle on Saturday night, diminutive Nate Robinson defeated defending Slam Dunk champion Dwight Howard in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest.

The winning dunk was pretty incredible. Check out the video of Nate Robinson jumping over Dwight Howard to take the 2009 Slam Dunk content title:

But Nate Robinson was far from the only player who came up with impressive dunks on Saturday night. Dwight Howard proved his freakishness yet again by pulling out a taller basket and making clever use of a phone booth as a prop. Here is the video:

Even Rudy Fernandez had a pretty sweet dunk in which Pau Gasol threw the ball off the back of the backboard and Fernandez grabbed it mid-air and dunked it. Here is the video of Rudy Fernandez’s dunk:
