Top MLB Pitchers Born in Ohio

derek

In the long and rich history of Major League Baseball, the state of Ohio has produced an abundance of stars who have gone on to represent the sport in tremendous fashion.

Hall of Fame members Ed Delahanty, Rollie Fingers, Phil Niekro, Branch Rickey, George Sisler, and Cy Young were all born in the Buckeye state, and hundreds of other great players such as Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, Paul O’Neill, Barry Larkin and Thurman Munson called Ohio their birthplace as well.

Currently, the state of Ohio is well represented in the pitching ranks. Here are five of the top (current) MLB pitchers who were born in the great Buckeye state.

MLB 2011 Prediction: NL West – Defending champs are the favorites; will any contenders emerge?

2011-mlb-predictions-nl-west-tim-lincecum-brian-wilson

As Spring Training winds down in Arizona and Florida, we are going division-by-division previewing the 2011 Major League Baseball season. Previously, we discussed the NL East and whether the Phillies can live up to enormous preseason expectations.

In this post I will talk about the National League West, home of the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants.

Padre Pride

One year ago next week I wrote this piece about journeying down I-74 to Cincinnati to watch the downtrodden Padres (then 38-61) take on the equally feeble Reds (44-53).

As I head down to Cincy to watch Stephen Strasburg take on the Reds (51-42) Wednesday night, 12 months can clearly change matters in the baseball world.

Just five weeks in, new baseball season already excites

ryan-zimmerman-nationals

I’ve finally come to the realization that I am a so-called baseball apologist. I am absolutely willing to ignore the bad in baseball (Joe Morgan’s annoying crusades, honoring anti-Americans at “Civil Rights Weekend,” the overplayed yet somewhat true “big market dominance” in October, alleged steroid usage from a decade ago that bores fans and has no effect on this season, etc) and instead find the good that far outweighs the bad — especially when there is just so much bad in the other major sports, particularly the NFL.

I do have some recommendations for the Major League Baseball, however (move the Astros to the AL West or simply abolish divisional play, lengthen round one of the postseason to best of seven, return to a balanced schedule…), but overall, I think the game is as good as ever. Attendance and pure human interest back that up, as 2010 itself has seen an unprecedented amount of excitement and history in just five short weeks:

We had a no hitter, a perfect game, a 20 inning classic, and last Friday, a 47 year old threw a two hit shutout the same night a 20 year-old had six RBI in his big league debut. Not bad.

Let’s look at the top “storylines” of the first one-fifth of the season:

Proud of the Padres

In the past three months of regular season baseball, is any team better than the San Diego Padres?

This is not a joke.

I attended a Padres-Reds game in Cincinnati on Monday night July 27, 2009. I even wrote a piece prior to heading down to Cincy about such a weak matchup.

The Reds demolished the Padres and Josh Geer that evening, but the Padres turned around and took the next three in the series, never having looked back since.

Would & Should the White Sox Consider Trading Gordon Beckham for Adrian Gonzalez?

white sox trade rumor - gordon beckham for adrian gonzalez

I have to admit, reading about this on Twitter last night shocked me.

One of the hot rumors making the rounds right now is that White Sox GM Ken Williams is so enamored with Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez that he might – might – be willing to include 2B Gordon Beckham in a deal for the lefty power hitter.

Via the fine folks at MLB Trade Rumors (my favorite site for important baseball news and rumors like this), who wrote about the White Sox interest in trading for Adrian Gonzalez last night, I stumbled upon an article by Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com that discusses how well Jake Peavy is fitting in with the White Sox (Yeeesss!).

In the article, Peavy is quoted expressing his desire to bring his former teammate to the South Side. He has also reportedly discussed it with Williams, who we all know would probably trade his soul for a young, power hitting, lefty bat.

Bill K’s Interview with Minor League Pitcher Colt Hynes

colt-hynes

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Joshua “Colt” Hynes.

Colt is a 2006 graduate of Texas Tech University and drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 2007 June draft. It was insightful to learn about what a player experiences once being drafted and their progression through the organization.
