An era ends in Chicago: Ozzie Guillen out as manager, will reportedly head to Miami

ozzie-guillen-world-series

One of the most successful managerial tenures in the history of Chicago baseball came to a close today, and as a White Sox fan who has lived and died with this team for the last 15 years I can sum up my feelings in one word: melancholy.

If you haven’t heard yet, Ozzie Guillen is out as White Sox manager, effective immediately, with all signs pointing to him becoming the next manager of the Miami (yes, Miami…like in Back to the Future 2) Marlins.

As I said on Twitter earlier tonight, it’s a rather bitter end to what was, all in all, a pretty damn sweet tenure for Oz in what will always be his baseball home: the South Side of Chicago.

Pitchers v Position Players: Who Has a Greater Impact on a Season?

Justin Verlander

If you haven’t listened to Pat Suley’s outstanding QuickCast about why the American League MVP race should be a two-man contest between the Blue Jays’ José Bautista and the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, do that now. I’ll wait.

To make the case that Verlander is one of only two players deserving of the AL MVP, Pat enters the debate that arises whenever a pitcher arises as a legitimate MVP candidate: is a starting pitcher, who only plays every fifth game, as valuable to his team as a position player who plays every day?

bobby-cox

Welcome to our newest post series: the MSF QuickCast.

We know you’re busy, we know you’re on the go, and we know that attention spans on the web are short. MSF QuickCasts, quite simply, will be rants and raves about sports (and the occasional non-sports topic) that start and finish in less time than it takes to check your email.

That’s it. Quick, concise, and convenient. Like everything on the web should be.

And I’m leading off with the first QuickCast today. The topic: the MLB All Star Game.

Video: What would Ozzie Guillen say to Steve Bartman?

Hat tip to today’s Hot Clicks for this video, which was posted on June 6th, but which I never saw until today.

In the video, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is asked what he would say to Steve Bartman. Ozzie’s response? Initially, it’s exactly what mine would be:

Report: Ozzie could leave White Sox after 2012 if he doesn’t feel the love

Ho hum. Another uphill battles faces the White Sox as spring turns into summer, and yet again there appear to be issues between Ozzie Guillen and management.

Wake me when it’s over.

Hey Chicago Tribune, great article about the “kid-friendly” side of Ozzie Guillen…but who chose that for the picture?

ozzie-kid-friendly

I recommend that everyone read this article by Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune about White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. I think people sometimes wonder why his players love playing for him, and why most White Sox fans love Oz despite his many notorious blow-ups. This article shows a side of Oz that people in the organization and the fan base know and appreciate.

The article also delivers an unintentionally (I assume) hilarious picture choice under the headline “Sox have kid-friendly workplace”.

Another epic @OzzieGuillen rant ends with an important message for God…or you…or, oh who the hell knows

ozzie-guillen-choke

If you aren’t following Ozzie Guillen on Twitter, then you are not maximizing the true value of the social media medium that has forever changed how sports are covered and consumed.

Ozzie’s latest batch of nearly incomprehensible tweets is a rather inspirational soliloquy on perseverance and belief in oneself. It’s the Ozzie Twitter account at its finest.

MLB 2011 Predictions: AL Central — White Sox should have what it takes to supplant Twins

The Minnesota Twins won the Central last season, going 94-68 and finishing seven games ahead of the White Sox, only two games behind the Rays for best record in the American League.

Who will come out on top in what has historically been one of baseball’s most competitive divisions? Can the Twins repeat? Will the reloaded White Sox reclaim the throne? Can the Tigers rebound from last year’s disappointment?

Yesterday we analyzed the AL East. Let’s take look at the AL Central.

Is this the last season for Ozzie Guillen in Chicago?

Could the White Sox disappointing September swoon be the swan song for Ozzie Guillen in Chicago? Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports posted an article this morning indicating that the possibility is very real, with Ozzie’s potential 2011 destination being the Florida Marlins.

And, of course, it will all likely come down to money and contracts. What doesn’t?

Photo Story: Joe Girardi struggles to deal with Cubs rumors

joe-girardi-chicago-cubs

This past weekend, the Yankees visited Chicago for a three game set with the White Sox. New York won two out of three to maintain its first place tie with the Rays in the AL East, but the Yankees and manager Joe Girardi were not able to get out of town without a little bit of controversy.

The controversy wasn’t about the team on Chicago’s south side, however; rather, it had to do with the team that plays its home games on the city’s northern end, which just happens to not have a manager lined up for next year, and which also just happens to be Girardi’s former stomping grounds.

As we were when LeBron was making his Decision, and when Brett Favre was trying to decide whether or not to retire, MSF was there with our camera to capture the most important moments:

Which Chicago Sports Team Will End Its Title Drought Next?

cubs-tradition

The winds of unbridled excitement, reminiscent of 2005, are blowing through the city of Chicago today after the Chicago Blackhawks ended a 49-year Stanley Cup drought last night by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in OT.

As with the White Sox championship back in the Fall of ’05, the Blackhawks winning it all is extra special because of the prodigious cavern of time and seasons in between this title and the franchise’s last.

But that is how things go in Chicago. Teams win a title, then wait a long, long time before winning another. Case in point: the Bulls in ’94 and ’95. They went an entire two years without a 3-peat! It was truly a trying time for Chicagoans.

Okay…so maybe the Bulls are a bad example.

We all know who the big, pathetic elephant in the room is whenever someone mentions the words “Chicago” and “title drought” in the same sentence.

Now that the White Sox and Blackhawks have ended their droughts, the question is: will the Cubs be next? Or will another shorter Chicago sports drought end first?

Two More Reasons to Love Ozzie Guillen

ozzie-guillen-bye-lebron

And if you don’t love Ozzie, well you’re a f–king a–hole anyway, so f–k you and go to another f–king site.

There, glad that’s settled.

Now, since I complimented a Cubs fan this morning (I still need to shower to feel clean again) it’s time to counterbalance that with some love for someone from the South Side.

Luckily, the White Sox are managed by the incomparable Guillen, who somehow finds a way to do laudable things even in the midst of one of the more disappointing 50 game stretches of White Sox baseball I can remember over the last 10 years.

He recently did two that deserve recognition. And since no one slurps the Ozzie Guillen bathwater more unabashedly than me and KVB, I had to post about them.

MSF Top 10 List: Reactions to the “Quicken Groans LeBracle”

quicken-groans-lebracle

There is only one way to accurately describe what happened last night in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland:

WTF?

Perhaps not so coincidentally, the three letters above represent the same WTF number of shots LeBron James made last night.

Really, WTF doesn’t even describe last night’s game. Cleveland and LeBron pretty much rolled over, on their home floor, in a must win game, in a performance that even the Atlanta Hawks would have considered soft.

Every sports news outlet from Bristol to Bangkok will be dissecting LeBron’s poor play last night and assessing what it may or may not mean for his future in Cleveland. I thought I’d throw my two cents in as well, although with a little bit of a difference perspective.

Thursday WYNTR: The Baseball Playoffs Get Infinitely More Interesting After a Bad Day for ESPN

kate-beckinsale-thumb

The biggest on-field news in the sports world yesterday obviously revolves around the Philadelphia Phillies beating the LA Dodgers to reach the World Series.

The biggest off-field news in the sports world yesterday involved ESPN, Deadspin, and some pretty lurid tales of sex, ego, and quid pro quo. We discussed this as it was happening, but there have also been new developments in the “ESPN Horndog Dossier” since we signed off yesterday.

But that was yesterday. It’s now Thursday, and we already have the most important news of today and it’s not even 6:30 CT yet: Ozzie Guillen will be working for Fox as a studio analyst during this year’s World Series. Yep, this is going to be great.

And now the rest of What You Need To Read for Thursday, October 22nd, brought to you by…Kate Beckinsale.

Gordon Beckham Injury Update: Strained Oblique, Return Likely This Week

gordon beckham injury update - strained right oblique - to return wednesday, maybe fridayWhite Sox rookie 3B Gordon Beckham has put his name front and center in the AL Rookie of the Year discussion by leading all AL rookies in doubles (23), RBIs (52), and extra base hits (34).

He is also dealing with a strained right oblique injury that may threaten his ability to battle Rangers shortshop Elvis Andrus mano-a-mano for the award down the stretch.

The injury forced Beckham to leave Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox in the first inning, and was originally called a “stiff back.” As I mentioned in a previous post, all White Sox fans have become conditioned to fear our third baseman and the term “stiff back” being placed anywhere near eachother.

Luckily for Beckham and the White Sox, the injury does not appear serious and his return is likely this week. Most likely, Beckham will return on Wednesday, but the White Sox could hold him out until Friday (with an off day mercifully coming on Thursday).

Scott Merkin wrote about Beckham’s injury today at his White Sox blog “Being Ozzie Guillen” and says that the manager is going to err on the side of caution with his young phenom, but that Guillen also wants Beckham back in the lineup when he is ready to both help the White Sox finish strong in September and compete for the Rookie of the Year.

From Merkin’s article updating the status of Gordon Beckham’s injury:

“I want him to finish strong,” said Guillen of Beckham. “Hopefully he can get what I want him to get, that award. He deserved and earned it. It’s our job to make sure we do the best for him to get it. We’ll talk to (White Sox athletic trainer) Herm (Schneider) about it. It’s a day game today and hopefully the long day he’ll get better.”

Let’s hope the kid can come back and find his hitting stroke again.  Gordon Beckham struggled out of the gate, then got hot, and has cooled off as of late (7 for his last 36 with only 1 2B). When Beckham was hot, the White Sox were playing their best baseball of the season and threatening the Tigers’ hold on the top spot in the AL Central.

Though another AL Central crown and a return trip to the playoffs seems out of reach for the White Sox in 2009, crazier things have happened. No question, the White Sox need a healthy and hitting Gordon Beckham to have even a prayer of a late September surge.
