[Editor's Note: I am very pleased today to introduce our newest contributor, The Sports Muse. He'll be discussing a college football...and whatever else inspires him. Today, the Sports' Muse sports muse is the first week of the college football season, and he offers his picks for some of this weekend's marquee matchups.]
I woke up one day in mid-August with a feeling of slight melancholy. Not for me, nor my family, nor any of my friends. Instead, I was sad for the folks at Street and Smith’s. After all, it was not that many years ago that I would faithfully hit the newsstand on July 1st every year to pick up the college and pro football versions of that magazine, as well as The Sporting News and a few others.
Now, between Al Gore inventing the Internet and my children arriving on the scene, I have no need nor time to get a magazine that is already obsolete by the time it is released.
I could not let my twinge of regret stop progress. So with a new season approaching, there was lots of work to do to prepare for football. After all, in my own mind, whether information has been commoditized or not, it is still a good party trick to be able to rattle off how many offensive linemen the Wisconsin Badgers have returning or what team is made up of former high school teammates.
And I wonder why, back in the day, I left all the parties alone….
