Viewer’s Guide: NFL Week 7 TV Schedule and Announcer Assignments

nfl-week-15-tv-schedule-announcers

All you need to know about this week’s NFL schedule is that there is not one single game in which two teams with winning records will face off. That doesn’t mean there won’t be compelling action, but it does mean that there are probably very few potential playoff previews because top flight teams like we had last week when Detroit and San Francisco faced off. (Feel free to read that sentence again if still astounds you to see Detroit and San Francisco in the same sentence with the phrases “potential playoff preview” and “top flight teams”.)

Fantasy Football Week 6 Player Rankings at QB, RB, WR, TE, K, D/ST

drew-brees-carlton

Yesterday, Jon Washburn posted his player rankings (for the rest of the season, not Week 6-specific) and discussed the fantasy potential of the new guy playing quarterback for the Broncos (what’s his name???). This came on the heels of his weekly start/sit column and Andy Bottoms’ always excellent waiver wire pickups piece.

Today, via the folks at PlayThisGuy.com, we bring you player rankings specific to Week 6 at QB, RB, WR, TE, D/ST, and K, as well as another opportunity – because we love you all so much (and because they throw a little money our way for our time) – to participate in a freeroll tournament with real money prizes at stake.

Viewer’s Guide: NFL Week 6 TV Schedule, Announcers, and Coverage Maps for Week of Sunday, October 16th

nfl-week-15-tv-schedule-announcers

In the Week 6 Bettor’s Guide, I discussed a couple of the games I am most looking forward to this week: Carolina-Atlanta (because Cam Newton is so individually compelling and the Falcons’ season hangs in the balance) and Detroit-San Francisco (because the two teams are a combined 9-1). When the season began, who would have thought that those two games would carry such intrigue?

Well they are far from the only ones a pretty solid Week 6 schedule.

[Update: I forgot the Cowboys-Patriots game! Thanks to the commenter who pointed this out. It has been added.]

After a few good weeks in a row that got me to 10 games over .500, I slipped a bit last week. That is what trusting the Eagles, Giants, and Falcons will get you here in 2011. After my 5-7-1 showing last week, I am now 41-33-3, a win percentage of 53.2%.

I promise to do better this week. And I always keep my promises. (Just please don’t ask any past girlfriends to confirm this. I’m speaking only in the context of Bettor’s Guide promises.)

Fantasy Football Week 6 Player Rankings

tim-tebow-fantasy-football-week-13-start-sit-advice

A few weeks ago, Verizon Wireless contacted MSF with an amazing opportunity.  If I agreed to try out one of their phones (equipped with NFL Mobile) and one of their tablets, and blog about my experiences, they would give me the phone, give me the tablet, and fly me to Chicago to stay in the Hard Rock Hotel and attend the Packers/Bears game.

If you are thinking, “No way…that’s too good to be true”… you aren’t alone.  Unbelievably though, there were no “catches,” and the experience has been amazing. Over the course of this season, I’ll be updating you on my experience with Verizon’s products – the good and/or the bad, as my opinions are my own and beholden to no one – but so far so good.

There seem to be several constants in American sports:

  • Always cheer for the “underdog.”
  • Always cheer for the “good guy.”
  • And, oddly enough, always cheer for the “unorthodox guy.”

Unless, of course, that guy happens to be Tim Tebow.

NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Hipster Drew, Tebow, and Tits Edition

hipster

I don’t really have anything to rant or tangent about this week. I’ve been sick lately, and no one really wants to hear about me not being able to breathe or getting two new prescription inhalers to use. Yes, I am a nerd. I walk around listening to hipster music wearing glasses and keep an emergency inhaler in my backpack. [Editor's note: actual picture of Sick Hipster Drew Lange below.]

Fantasy Football Week 6 Waiver Wire Advice and Pickups: Tebow, Torain, Colt, Carter, Cassel, and more

delone-carter-fantasy-football-week-6-waiver-wire-advice-pickups

Compared to the last couple weeks, there were relatively few impactful injuries during Week Five.  Couple that with the fact that a number of the teams on bye next week (Arizona, Denver, Kansas City, San Diego, Seattle, and Tennessee) aren’t exactly offensive juggernauts, and you might think there aren’t many worthy pickups on the waiver wire this week.

To a certain extent, you’re right.  There are very few must-adds this week, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t guys out there who can help your team the rest of the way, possibly as soon as this week. (For more Week 6 analysis, here is this week’s Start/Sit column.)

As always, the players listed here are owned in fewer than 50% of Yahoo! leagues.

Friday Injury Updates: Rodgers, Johnson, Vick, and more

It’s Friday, so let’s talk about all of the important injuries heading into the weekend.

For the Green Bay Packers, it might be easier to list who isn’t hurt than to list who is. This team is absolutely snake-bitten with injuries this year.

For those of you who own the Green Bay defense, or in IDP leagues, Clay Matthews has not been practicing and is a long shot to play this weekend against Miami. Here are some other names on the injury report from the Green Bay D: Brandon Chillar, Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett, Nick Collins, Cullen Jenkins, Nick Barnett. Wow. It might be a good week to sit the Green Bay D.

The most important injury in Green Bay though is Aaron Rodgers.

NFL Bettor’s Guide: Week 6 Picks, Point Spreads, and Over-Under Odds

Update 10/14: The spreads and picks for all games but Miami-Green Bay have been posted.

Thanks to Brett Favre’s 4th quarter pick-6, the Jets covered the 4-point spread Monday night and I eeked out another .500+ week.

I was only 7-6, but just as NFL teams simply want to get out of the week with a W, my goal is to get out of the week above .500. And so far, so good. I’ve been over .500 every week this season and currently sit at 42-29-3 picking every game against the spread early in the week.

Let’s run down this week’s spreads – which includes a pretty shocking one in San Francisco – and I’ll give you my quick hit picks for every game.

NFL Viewer’s Guide: Week 6 TV Schedule, Announcer Assignments, Matchups, and Teams on Bye

Update 10/12: All announcer assignments have been added for the Week 6 games.

Take one glance at the Week 6 matchups and two jump out immediately: Falcons-Eagles, where Michael Vick could make his first start against his former team (ribs willing); and, Cowboys-Vikings, where two desperate Super Bowl contenders (or so they thought) battle to save their seasons.

Oh, and Colt McCoy is probably going to make his first start in Pittsburgh against Troy Polamalu and the Steelers’ outstanding defense. Yeah, that’s going to go well.

Fantasy Football Deeper Sleeper Alert for Week 6: Torry Holt

torry-holt

It dawned on me a couple of days ago while going through the Week 6 schedule that we have a very underrated reunion story taking place this week. Unfortunately, it is during one of the least compelling and meaningful games on the schedule from a “real” standpoint.

I am speaking, of course, about Torry Holt, one of the greatest players in Rams history, who will be hosting his former team this weekend as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Even though it is not a game getting much attention, that doesn’t mean the game won’t be very meaningful from a fantasy standpoint.

In fact, quite the contrary. When the Jaguars and Rams meet up this weekend, with their two combined victories and zero percent chances to make the playoffs, I propose that the events could dictate the outcome of many a fantasy matchup this week. Why?

23rd and 30th.

Those are the overall defensive ranks of the Rams and Jags, respectively.

Which brings me to Torry Holt as a sleeper selection for your Week 6 lineups.

4th & Short NFL Picks Podcast – Week 6

4th-short-logo

Last week we introduced 4th and Short, our weekly NFL picks podcast featuring myself and Big MB.

As promised, 4th & Short is back this week to give you expert point spread analysis for the most compelling games on the NFL Week 6 schedule.

In Week 6, there are clearly three games that jump off the schedule as being the most important games of the week: Ravens-Vikings, Falcons-Bears, and of course, Giants-Saints.

Big MB and I look at these three games, plus five more, and determine which teams will cover the spread and which teams will come up short.

NFL Week 6 Picks, Point Spreads, and TV Schedule

Update: The NFL Week 17 TV schedule, point spreads, and picks post is up.

——————–

Week 5 was not so stellar for me from a fantasy perspective, but on the bright side the Browns actually got a W and the Dolphins are up 10-7 on the Jets right now as I write this.

Plus, I dominated against the spread last week: 9-4 (with the updated Monday night result). That makes me 43-31 against the spread on the season, meaning I would have to totally pull a chiefsramsraiderstitansbucs two weeks in a row to fall below .500.

This week features a few very interesting games, most notably an undefeated showdown between the 4-0 Saints and 5-0 Giants. Unfortunately, it’s a 1:00 game. The Vikings and Ravens also matchup at 1:00.

In primetime, we get a pretty intriguing matchup between 3-1 Atlanta and 3-1 Chicago, and then it’s Broncos-Chargers on Monday night. The early spread for that game was very surprising, at least to me.

Who am I picking? Read on for the NFL Week Six picks, point spreads, and TV schedule.
