For the playoffs so far Jerod is 6-2 after a furious, Giants-like finish to the regular season. Can he keep the momentum going for one more week leading up to the Super Bowl? Here is all of the TV and spread info you need for the AFC and NFC Championship Games, plus Jerod's picks.

After going 4-0 during Wild Card Weekend, I feel back a bit this past weekend. I went 2-2, nailing the San Francisco and New York games while missing rather badly on the Patriots and Ravens victories (I thought Denver would keep it close and Baltimore would dominate…whoops!).

So for the playoffs so far I am 6-2, coming on the heels of my 115-113-8 and regular season. Like the Giants, I finished the regular season with a fury to get over .500 and have carried that momentum into the playoffs. Can I do it for one more week leading up to the Super Bowl?

I haven’t looked at the spreads yet as I type this. I anticipate both games being difficult to predict.

The 49ers are at home, where they beat the Giants earlier this year in a very competitive game. But New York is playing much better now, and I don’t like the idea of a team have to beat another team twice. With no stats to back this up, it seems like playoff rematches go to the team that lost the first team (and this seems especially true with the Giants of the last decase).

As for the Ravens and Patriots, we know New England will put up points. Can Joe Flacco do enough to keep it close? Doubtful, but the pick will depend on just how many points the Pats are giving.

As always:

Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots

Ravens-Patriots Date: Sunday, January 22nd

Ravens-Patriots Time: 3:00 ET

Ravens-Patriots TV: CBS

Ravens-Patriots Announcers: Jim Nantz and Phil Simms (with Steve Tasker)

Ravens-Patriots Point Spread: Patriots -7.5

Ravens-Patriots Over-Under: 50.5

Ravens-Patriots Spread Pick:

I didn’t follow the Ravens-Texans game all that closely through the first 3 quarters yesterday. Around the start of the 4th quarter I tweeted out that it sounded like Houston was outplaying Baltimore despite the score. Every tweet I received in reply agreed.

While Houston is a good team with a great running back, Baltimore should have been able to dispatch of a T.J. Yates-led team with far more ease if they are thinking about going into New England and winning. I just don’t see.

Baltimore’s defense is very good, but not the dominant unit it once was, and New England’s defense seems to be buoyed by the return to health of some key players; and we know how powerful Brady’s connection with his tight ends has become.

If this game was in Baltimore, where the Ravens always play with an extra bounce in their step, I’d consider taking the points. In New England, with Brady and the Pats looking as locked in as they do, I think I’d lay a couple of touchdowns, which makes a little more than one an easy decision.

Ravens-Patriots spread pick: Patriots -7.5

New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers

Giants-49ers Date: Sunday, January 22nd

Giants-49ers Time: 6:30 ET

Giants-49ers TV: FOX

Giants-49ers Announcers: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman (with Pam Oliver and Chris Myers)

Giants-49ers Point Spread: 49ers -2.5

Giants-49ers Over-Under: 43

Giants-49ers Spread Pick:

My heart says San Francisco, and there was a certain “Team of Destiny” feeling to that improbable win over the Saints, but it is very hard to pick against the Giants seeing how they’ve played over the last month and remembering what they did back in January and February of 2008.

With so many key components of that improbable run back for this one – most notably the coach and QB and the dominant defensive line – the Giants have a Super Bowl look about them. Plus, New York almost beat San Francisco at Candlestick earlier this year. While San Fran has continued to play at a high level, the Giants now seem appreciably better, which could help bridge the gap that kept New York from winning last time.

I hope I’m wrong; I hope Jim Harbaugh, Alex Smith and Co have enough magic to continue this amazing and unexpected ride, but the Giants have been here before and have an elite QB who has become easy to trust. I’d take New York if it was a pick ‘em, so give me the points.

After an up and down regular season in which I needed a furious finish to end up over .500, I couldn’t have started the playoffs out with any more momentum. I nailed all four games last week, and I’m even going to give myself extra credit for making the Giants -3 my lock, since they delivered the most dominant win of the weekend.

Now it’s time to move onto the divisional round.

This is my favorite weekend of NFL playoff football. There are four games, most of the borderline playoff teams like Cincy and Atlanta have been removed, and the best of the best are all in action. Of course the most anticipated game nationally is Denver-New England, and with good reason, but each game provides its own level of intrigue.

We will have previews of every game later in the week. To kick off our Divisional Round coverage here at MSF, below are the spreads, the TV schedule, and my picks for each of the four games on this week’s schedule.

Picks – Point Spreads – Over-Unders

Lock of the Week – TV Schedule

———-

New Orleans Saints at San Francisco 49ers

Saints-49ers Date, Time, and TV: Saturday, January 14th at 4:30 ET on FOX

Saints-49ers Announcers: Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston, and Tony Siragusa

Saints-49ers Point Spread: Saints -3.5

Saints-49ers Over-Under: 47.5

Saints-49ers Pick: I wrote about this game yesterday after listening to the ESPN talking heads discuss the Saints as if their ticket to the NFC Title Game has already been punched. It hasn’t. They have to play away from their precious dome against a team that is 7-1 in their home park and features the best defense in the league. This game is anything but a sure thing, and the spread – the closest of all four games – is indicative of that. Last year, the Saints won 25-22 in San Francisco on a last second field goal. A lot of the players have changed, of course, but I think this game will be similar. It will be a close, competitive matchup that someone will win by a field goal. Give me San Fran with the home field advantage and the points. 49ers-Saints free pick: 49ers +3.5

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots

Broncos-Patriots Date, Time, and TV: Saturday, January 14th at 8:00 ET on CBS

Broncos-Patriots Announcers: Jim Nantz and Phil Simms

Broncos-Patriots Point Spread: Patriots -13.5

Broncos-Patriots Over-Under: 51

Broncos-Patriots Pick: That’s a big spread, a very big spread, especially to give a team that has not won a playoff game since the AFC Championship game in 2008 and that features an atrocious defense. I know that Tom Brady is really good, and Bill Belichick will surely cook something up on defense to confuse Tim Tebow, but with the confidence Tebow and the Broncos gained against Pittsburgh they are going to come into New England ready to deliver their best shot. ALL of the pressure is on New England in this game. They’ll probably win it because of Brady, but this isn’t going to be any kind of cakewalk. Not anymore. And with that big of a spread, this is a no-brainer. Broncos-Patriots free pick: Broncos +13.5

Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens

Texans-Ravens Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, January 15th at 1:00 ET on CBS

Texans-Ravens Announcers: Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf

Texans-Ravens Point Spread: Ravens -9

Texans-Ravens Over-Under: 35.5

Texans-Ravens Pick: I am tempted to pick the Texans, because they run the ball so well and have a solid defense, but I just can’t do it. T.J. Yates was fine managing the game against Cincinnati, but facing the Ravens’ defense in Baltimore is a whole different ballgame. The Ravens are rested, and while their defense isn’t what it once was, they can still get after the QB when motivated, at home, in a big game. Just ask San Francisco, which dealt with it on Thanksgiving night. I think that’s the Ravens’ D we see on Sunday, and it won’t bode well for Yates. Offensively, Joe Flacco and Ray Rice will do enough to make this a relatively smooth victory. Texans-Ravens free pick: Ravens -9

New York Giants at Green Bay Packers

Saints-49ers Date, Time, and TV: Sunday, January 15th at 4:30 ET on FOX

Saints-49ers Announcers: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman

Saints-49ers Point Spread: Packers -9

Saints-49ers Over-Under: 52.5

Saints-49ers Pick: My gut reaction to the spread is that it’s just too many points. Green Bay is excellent, and they will surely put up more than the two points Atlanta scored on New York – probably 15-20 times over – but I don’t think the Packers’ D has any answer for Eli and his three receivers, plus a now-healthy tandem of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. The game they played earlier in the year went down to the wire. Even though the venue is different this time around, I see no reason to think this one won’t go down to the wire too. Giants-Packers free pick: Giants +9

Lock of the Week: Divisional Round Edition

It’s really tough picking a lock this week. My first instinct is to go with the Broncos +13.5 simply because that is so many points, but I don’t know that I trust the Broncos’ defense enough to do that. If the Patriots hang 35-40 points on Denver, a very real possibility, they may be able to cover. I don’t think that’ll happen, but it does make me lean towards the Giants keeping it within nine points of Green Bay.

The Packers haven’t been overly impressive their last few times out. They’ve been very good, don’t get me wrong, but not great like they were as they were mowing down opponents left and right. Frankly, the Giants have been more impressive the last few weeks, which should lead to an excellent game in Green Bay. I’ll take the Giants as my lock again, this time getting 9 points against a Green Bay team they already came thisclose to beating.

The most important thing to note about the Week 16 schedule is that the majority of it will be played on Saturday, Christmas Eve, with the usual primetime games on Sunday and Monday night. Jerod breaks the schedule down for you here, along with the announcer assignments for each game.

One game of the Week 16 schedule is already in the books — the Indianapolis Colts secured win #2 of the season by defeating the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium. (But did they lose for winning?) What’s in store for the rest of Week 16? Check out the TV schedule below and our Bettor’s Guide, posted earlier this week.

The most important thing to note about the Week 16 schedule is that the majority of it will be played on Saturday, Christmas Eve, with the usual primetime games on Sunday and Monday night, but nothing else on Christmas Day to interrupt the present unwrapping (and, of course, Christmas Day NBA lineup).

The highlights?

Dallas-Philadelphia should be a fun game, though we won’t know if it is at all meaningful until the Giants-Jets game is over.

San Francisco-Seattle is a much better matchup than most people are giving it credit for, though I guess I can’t really blame people for being uninspired by Alex Smith v Tarvaris Jackson.

Oh, and Tim Tebow is playing. But beware the trap game for Denver. Don’t be shocked if Buffalo wins.

As for the primetime games, Green Bay-Chicago is always intriguing and New Orleans-Atlanta could very well be one of the 10 most entertaining games of the season.

So, all in all, a pretty good slate of games for NFL fans this weekend. Merry Christmas to us!

The Broncos-Patriots game on tap this weekend should be a thoroughly entertaining game to watch, and I will definitely be tuning in. What other games are on tap for you this week? Take a gander at this week's Viewer's guide below.

I surely do not need to remind you what the biggest game of Week 15 is.

The Patriots and Broncos take the field together Sunday afternoon in what is being billed as Tom versus Tim but really is a battle of a great (though one-dimensional) offense against a good-to-great defense and a good-for-one-quarter offense against a can’t-stop-the-pass defense.

Who will win? Based solely on the law of averages alone, I think Denver is due for a loss. And seeing as how Tom Brady is far and away the best QB they’ve faced during this run of Tebow Mania, he seems like the perfect guy to end the ride. I do, however, think the Broncos keep it close and cover, as I explained in this week’s Bettor’s Guide.

And if Denver does lose, no one should fret. Shoot, the Broncos may even play their best game of the season and still lose this weekend; that happens in sports. But at some point a bounce is going to go the other team’s way in the 4th quarter, and it will have nothing to do with Tim Tebow or God or any of that stuff. It’s just the way sports go.

Regardless, this should be a thoroughly entertaining game to watch, and I will definitely be tuning in.

This Viewer's Guide for Week 11 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times) and announcer assignments for each game on the NFL Week 11 schedule.

This week isn’t really a banner week for the NFL in terms of compelling games to look forward to, but there are at least few interesting matchups on the Week 11 slate.

Sunday night features the terrible Eagles minus Michael Vick against the Giants. This game is nowhere near as interesting as it should be, but seeing how Vince Young looks in his return to NFL action is slightly compelling.

Far more compelling is the battle in the AFC North between the inconsistent Ravens and the upstart Bengals. I think the Ravens are going to win handily, but we’ve learned to never count out the Red Rifle.

But the Game of the Week is clearly Jacksonville against Cleveland. This game will something along the lines of what we’ll see if Oregon and Houston end up meeting in a BCS bowl game. Just offense and excitement all over the place.

Seriously, tell me you’re not excited for Gabbert v McCoy. Scintillating.

Enough sarcasm. Time for the guide.

This Viewer's Guide for Week 9 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times) and announcer assignments for each game on the NFL Week 9 schedule.

Week 8 was just weird. St. Louis put a totally unexpected beatdown on New Orleans, Dallas didn’t even compete in their divisional battle against Philadelphia, and after eight weeks of play the San Francisco 49ers have a damn-near-clinching four game lead in the NFC West.

Wha-what?

So what could Week 9 possibly have in store for us?

As I mentioned in this week’s Bettor’s Guide, that 49ers-Redskins game may not the slam-dunk San Fran victory some seem to think it will be. The 49ers have to travel east to play in the early time slot. Remember that when they beat Philly earlier this year in the early time slot, they had stayed out in Ohio the previous week after their game against Cincinnati.

Another game to keep in an eye on that should be fun will be Green Bay-San Diego. Both offenses are capable of putting up big numbers. We’ll see if Philip Rivers and the Chargers’ offense can actually do it though; they need to, to make amends for last week’s “worst day ever” debacle.

And don’t forget to pay close attention to the Atlanta-Indy and Miami-Kansas City games to see if either team can gain an advantage in the Suck for Luck Sweepstakes.

My apologies for the delay in getting this week’s Viewer’s Guide up. The Week 8 Bettor’s Guide went up on time but this one slipped my mind in the World Series excitement we were provided with this week.

Just taking a quick look at this week’s schedule, it’s easy to see that the early games leave a lot to be desired, but Week 8 picks up the further we get into it. There is even a good Sunday night game for the first time in a while, and a Monday night game between division rivals with actual playoff implications. (And let’s be honest, a Monday night game can’t get too much more boring than last week’s flaccofest.)

A couple of quick things to keep in mind:

All you need to know about this week’s NFL schedule is that there is not one single game in which two teams with winning records will face off. That doesn’t mean there won’t be compelling action, but it does mean that there are probably very few potential playoff previews because top flight teams like we had last week when Detroit and San Francisco faced off. (Feel free to read that sentence again if still astounds you to see Detroit and San Francisco in the same sentence with the phrases “potential playoff preview” and “top flight teams”.)

The San Diego-New York game should be a bit spicier now that Rex Ryan has inserted his own foot (this time) into his mouth, causing even the mild-mannered Norv Turner to fire shots.

Other intriguing matchups include Denver at Miami because of the Tebow factor, and the Minnesota-Green Bay game where Aaron Rodgers will show Christian Ponder what being a quarterback is all about.

This Viewer's Guide for Week 6 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times) and announcer assignments for each game on this week's NFL schedule.

In the Week 6 Bettor’s Guide, I discussed a couple of the games I am most looking forward to this week: Carolina-Atlanta (because Cam Newton is so individually compelling and the Falcons’ season hangs in the balance) and Detroit-San Francisco (because the two teams are a combined 9-1). When the season began, who would have thought that those two games would carry such intrigue?

Well they are far from the only ones a pretty solid Week 6 schedule.

New England-Dallas should be an interesting matchup that will come down to one key factor: which Tony Romo will show up? If “Good Romo” shows up the Cowboys have a chance, because Miles Austin and Dez Bryant will be back to put tons of pressure on the NE secondary. But if “Bad Romo” makes the trip, Tom Brady and Co. could win handily.

I’m also very intrigued by the Minnesota-Chicago game. Frankly, I think Minnesota is going to dominate the Bears. Chicago won’t be able to stop either Jared Allen or Adrian Peterson, which should allow the Vikings to mask the deficiencies of Donovan McNabb.

A couple of quick things to keep in mind:

This Viewer's Guide for Week 5 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times) and announcer assignments for each game on the NFL Week 5 schedule.

I don’t know why it irks me so much, but if I have to hear the phrase “at the quarter pole” to describe the first weeks of the season being done, I’m going to scream. Sure, it’s accurate, but something about so many NFL talking heads using the phrase has just begun to grate at my ears.

But I digress.

Week 5 is here, and there are several games to look forward to as you plan your Sunday of football viewing.

The obvious marquee matchup is New England versus the Jets. I am looking forward to this game to see if the Jets are actually going to be anything this year. If they are, they’ll play inspired football and at least make it a game. If not, the Patriots may roll like they did in the game last year when Mr. Uggs threw 4 TDs.

I am also pumped about the Sunday night matchup. Fun things to seem to happen in the Georgia Dome, and I’m looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 points to be scored between the Packers and Falcons.

Other highlights: Tampa Bay v San Francisco (who’d a thunk it??); Detroit v Chicago on Monday night; and Eagles-Bills in Buffalo as Philly tries to salvage its nightmare of a season so far.

This Viewer's Guide for Week 4 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times) and announcer assignments for each game on the NFL Week 4 schedule, plus provides links to view the coverage maps.

As I sat at my family’s usual table at BW3′s while the first slate of Sunday’s games wound down, I realized that every single game being shown was within a touchdown. Now that’s what I call one hell of a Sunday.

The fun even kept up during the primetime games, as the PIT-Indy game was much better than I thought, and the Dallas-Washington game was exciting even if a little bit ugly.

In Week 4, there are a number of interesting matchups that have my interest piqued, plus an exciting surprise for those of you who will be watching the Redskins-Rams game.

Detroit-Dallas should be a fascinating game. I really think the Lions are going to be way too much for the Cowboys to handle, and I’m not sure Dallas’ streak of 3-point games will continue. Ravens-Jets on Sunday night should also be a fascinating game between two teams that know eachother well and like to play physical football.

Below you will find everything you need to plan your Sunday viewing.

This Viewer's Guide for Week 3 of the NFL season breaks down the TV schedule (date, network, kickoff times), announcer assignments, and coverage maps for each game on the NFL Week 3 schedule.

In Week 3 I am always interested to see how the 0-2 teams perform.

When a team is 0-2, Week 3 represents their last chance to salvage something from the beginning of their season and avoid a nearly insurmountable hole. I have no stats to back this up, but I would assume that 0-2 teams typically play some of their best, most focused, most desperate football in their quest to get that first win and make something of their season.

This is why I picked a lot of home 0-2 underdogs in my Week 3 picks. Of course, a team being 0-2 could also mean that they suck and are injury-ravaged (*cough* Kansas City *cough*) so even Week 3 desperation might not be enough.

Do you realize that an entire week of NFL football went by without Brett Favre or Peyton Manning taking a snap? Kind of incredible when you stop and think about it. I think I was in junior high the last time that happened, maybe younger.

But we all survived, and now we head into Week 2 with a few teams feeling quite good about themselves (Buffalo, Chicago, San Francisco, for example) and several others already starting to get a slight feeling of desperation (Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Denver, to name a few).
