– Andrew Luck is going back to Stanford, but Ryan Mallett was kind enough to offer himself up as the sacrificial lamb for the Carolina Panthers. He’ll probably still be better than Jimmy Clausen, though.

– One thing you can’t say is that RichRod was fired for lack of practice (old joke: dominated). The rest? Yeah, that’s probably why.

– Jason Garrett’s headset was already wired into Jerry Jones’s intercom, and re-wiring is a bitch, so he stays. Tony Sporano was spared in Miami because he blamed it all on Chad Henne.

– Elsewhere in the NFL: Looks like Matt Hasselbeck will start for the Seahawks in Saturday’s Wildcard game against the defending champs … In a probably half-assed effort, the NFL will look at ways to make sure we never have to hear the previous sentence again … Like they have been the last ten years, the Indianapolis Colts are a playoff threat, but this year they are a threatening version of an injured calf or something; which is still dangerous, I think.

– A day later, and yep, still true: Nobody is all that impressed with the BBWAA (except themselves, I presume), and now their cute little Web site got hacked. The sanctity of the internets are forever tarnished!

– NBA: The Nuggets, Nets and Cavaliers almost figured out a way to send Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey. It didn’t happen, and ‘Melo remains on a talented, winning team. That’s still good, right? …  The Dirk-less Mavericks (sigh) lost at home to Oklahoma City, while the Kings made the most of their one game under the bright lights of TNT with a win over the Nuggets, who couldn’t be bothered with this one …  Also, Yao Ming underwent hopefully career-restoring ankle surgery.

It’s Wildcard weekend. Hold on to your butts.

Notre Dame was hoping for some better results the last two weeks. They could be 3-0, but instead  they’re 1-2. Those two losses all came down to one play, as most games usually do.

This week, the Fighting Irish hope to gain some momentum for when they play Oregon and USC, as in the next few weekends, but it’s going to be hard to get through this week with a win.

Stanford’s defense is a force to be reckon with. The Cardinal has switched to 3-4 defense with a lot of man-to-man coverage, and it’s working wonders. Their pass defense is number one in the country and sixth in overall defense; therefore, it’s not going to be easy to put points on the board against this defense.

Notre Dame has gone through some tough games this season, and they’ve learned a lot for being a young team; however this is their hardest game to date, and it’ll be a great test to see if they can play well against a much favored football team.

Norte Dame’s offense revolves around Dayne Crist, so it’s no surprise that the responsibility will be on his shoulders this week. Crist has hit the long balls, but is very inaccurate in the short passes, throwing many of his incompletions high.

I’ve seen much improvement in the Irish’s defense this season compared to last year’s. They’ve been able to keep the damage to a minimum, but Notre Dame is yet to show skill and talent that tells me they can keep a powerhouse of a team to limited scores. They may not need to if their offense is clicking, but they can’t rely on the offense all the time.

It’s going to be a good football game to watch, and I always love upsets, but I am staying with the favorite and picking Stanford to win 28-21

This time it’s the Michigan State Spartans (2-0), a team coming off a 30-17 win over Florida Atlantic; the Irish (1-1) are coming off a loss to the Michigan Wolverines.

The matchup is important for both teams. Notre Dame is looking to stay about .500 while Michigan State is looking to carry positive momentum into its Big Ten schedule.

Michigan State-Notre Dame Preview

Notre Dame faces a much more traditional offense than they saw against the Wolverines last week. The Spartans’ offensive game revolves around a strong running game, one that is averaging 261 yards per game, which is 11th best in the country. Their production comes from true sophomore Edwin Baker.

Stopping the the running game is going to again be key for the Irish. They were unable to contain the Wolverine’s running game, led by Denard Robinson, and it cost them the game. This week’s matchup will be another test for a mediocre Notre Dame defense.

Along with a great running game, the Spartans boast a tough defense, especially at the linebacker position. Greg Jones already has 20 tackles for the Spartans and has helped Michigan State’s defense allow only 130 rushing yards total the past two weeks.

This sets up a problem for the Irish. You need an established running game before the passing game becomes efficient. The Irish are going to have to figure out a way to get their running game up to par, otherwise it could be a very tough offensive day for them.

Last week, the Notre Dame offense sputtered once starting quarterback Dayne Crist left the game early on due to lack of vision in his right eye. Crist came back in after the half and finished the game, but the damage was already done to the Irish after struggling under backup quarterbacks Tommy Rees and Nate Montana.

Crist has fully recovered and can now see out of the right eye, which is great news for Irish fan. It became apparent that without Crist, Notre Dame doesn’t stand a chance against almost any team.

Michigan State-Notre Dame Prediction

I am expecting this game to be just as exciting as last week’s game. On paper, this game looks like it could go down to the wire.

This week I am putting my faith in the Irish because Crist is expected to play and be 100 percent. A healthy Crist, despite Notre Dame’s defensive issues, would have most likely led to a win against Michigan.

For those reasons I am picking Notre Dame to beat the Spartans.

Michigan State-Notre Dame Pick: Notre Dame 24 Michigan State 21

If you’re a fan of Indiana football (the state, not the university), you have to enjoy this first week match-up between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Purdue Boilermakers.

Both teams come into this season with a lot of mystery to them. They both begin 2010 with a new quarterback and an inexperienced backfield, which makes analyzing and predicting that much harder; but it also will lead to some surprises…some bad and some good.

Purdue at Notre Dame Preview

Purdue, after starting last season 1-5, finished 5-7, 4-4 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are led by quarterback and Miami transfer Robert Marve, whose main weapon is receiver Keith Smith. The Boilermakers’ success on offense will be determined by how well they balance their running and passing game. There’s defiantly a lot of pressure on the newcomer, Marve.

Purdue has a very young, athletic offense that has some big play potential, especially against a weak defensive team like the Irish.

Notre Dame comes into this season with a new coach, and, hopefully, a new defensive outlook. With a defense that let up almost 400 yards total offense last season, fans have been wishing for a better performance this season. The problem is that there is little proof that the Irish will be better on defense.

There are even more mysteries on the offense side of the ball.

Questions start right at the quarterback spot. Leading the Irish is junio Dayne Crist. An early rival game is a perfect chance to see how this kid will perform under some pressure.

Purdue at Notre Dame Prediction

First week rival games seem to show, early on, a little more from teams than starting the season against a non-rival team. Knowing this I am expecting to see a hard fought, close game.

Pick: Notre Dame wins a nail bitter 23-20.

Once again you can’t blame the offense because the Fighting Irish’s offense played very well today. They did a very nice job of balancing the running and passing game, but once again the defense let this team down. The Irish let thew Huskies run all over them, with the Huskies running for a total of 231 yards and two TDs.

And you can’t overlook the dedication that UConn showed all game. You could tell they were playing with a purpose. This was UConn’s most memorable win in its existence because it is the first time they have won since cornerback Jasper “Jazz” Howard was stabbed to death.

Jazz this is for you,” UConn coach Randy Edsall said. “Best win we have ever had.”

Coach Edsall and his players will remember this game for the rest of their lives. It was a deserving win for a deserving team.

As for Weis, this loss won’t help his cause on hoping to return next year. His winning percentage, .573, is now lower than both of the two former coaches before him. It is now the second time in row Weis hasn’t been able to win on Senior night.

Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and Michael Floyd all shared very productive nights. Clausen threw for 329 yards and two TDs. Tate caught nine balls for 128 yards and a TD while Floyd caught eight balls for 104 yards and a TD.

Notre Dame, now 6-5, plays Stanford next Saturday, November 28th.

Getting a jump start on next week’s college football TV schedule and point spread post because I don’t want to have to worry about it tomorrow night. Peyton v Brady will have my attention.

Anyway, the schedule is not filled with marquee matchups (Ohio State-Michigan is the headliner, if that tells you anything) but certainly could still be a pivotal week in the overall landscape of the season if any of the top teams stumble.

All will be favored by double digits though, so don’t hold your breath.

The plot is beginning to thicken, as they say, now that the calendar has turned to November.

Florida, Texas, and Alabama still appear to be the class of college football, with people still wondering exactly how good teams like Iowa, Boise State, and TCU really are.

It’s time to look ahead to this Saturday with this weekend’s college football TV schedule and point spreads.

The majority of this weekend’s games will be played on October 31st, which is, of course, Halloweeen. With top teams like Florida, Iowa, and Texas all being favored by nine points or more, their fans are certainly hoping that Saturday does not turn out to be a night of terror.

As usual, all point spread listings are as of Sunday night and certainly are subject to fluctuation throughout the week. I include them here simply for your own entertainment purposes, but here are links to where you can find updated information:

Not sure what all of these horrific and disgusting experiences have in common? They are all things I would rather do than watch Big Ten Football today.

Just take a look at these quick-hit facts about the Big Ten football schedule for November 1, 2008:

– The only two good teams in the conference, Penn State and Ohio State, are both off today.

– The most important game in terms of the standings is Northwestern at #17 Minnesota.

– The least important game involves Michigan, as the Wolverines and Purdue have a combined 1-7 record in Big Ten play.

– Indiana is actually taking a step up in competition this weekend by playing a non-conference game…against a MAC team, Central Michigan. Seriously. The Chippewas are 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the MAC. It is not a ridiculous question to ask if they are the best team in the state of Michigan. Michigan State would probably beat them behind Javon Ringer, but does anyone think Michigan would beat them? Right — just like they beat Toledo.

– Iowa and Illinois somehow tricked ABC into broadcasting their game. Truth be told, this game could be exciting to watch. Iowa has an exciting running back, Illinois has Juice Williams, and there is always the joy of watching Ron Zook pace around the field appearing to be in a perpetual state of confusion.

– Wisconsin and Michigan State are playing. Do you care?

I grew up around Big Ten football and have always enjoyed watching the typical noon game on ESPN. And there always seemed to be at least one important game being played on any given Saturday. But in a season where there are really only two teams in the entire conference worth watching, and neither of them is playing this weekend, it makes it pretty difficult to get excited about Big Ten football today.

KVB is a defensive Ohio State fan and likes to defend the Big Ten against attacks on the conference’s credibility, so he will probably post some hippie-infused, I-miss-Woody-and-Bo bullcrap that means nothing in the era of three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-bust appearances by Big Ten teams in BCS title games, and bowl games in general.

Big Ten football has been down for awhile now, and I officially submit this Saturday for consideration as the low point of Big Ten gridiron competition this decade.

But as I scrolled down, I saw something interesting. The phrase “fire bret bielema” had driven two visits; meaning that, most likely, some drunk buffoon in Madison watched Wisconsin get trashed by Iowa today and then typed “fire bret bielema” into Google and landed on my previous post that paid homage to the biggest losers in college football last weekend. More importantly, it means that at least some Badger fans have decided that one bad month of football should spell the end of a pretty good start to the Bret Bielema era so far. Look at the numbers coming into the season:

• 21-5 overall record, 12-4 in the Big Ten
• Two straight bowl appearances, winning the Capital One Bowl in 1996
• Consistently in the top 10, occasionally breaking into the Top 5

As a Tennessee fan, numbers like these look pretty good. And when Wisconsin jumped out to a 4-0 record before beginning Big Ten play, Brett Bielema sat at 25-5 through his first 30 games as a head coach. That is an outstanding winning percentage of 83.3%. Even with four straight losses, Bielema is 25-9, a winning percentage of 73.5%.

Could firing Bret Bielema really be a reasonable topic of thought and conversation for Badger Nation?

Well, look at the losses. The Badgers had the Michigan game in hand, and inexplicably allowed the Wolverines back into the game, which they subsequently stole away in the final minutes. The next week, Wisconsin played valiantly against Ohio State in Madison but lost 20-17. These two losses seemed to take the wind out of the Wisconsin sails. Over the last two Saturdays, Bret Bielema and the BADgers have been outscored 86-23 by Penn State and Iowa. They either didn’t show up or are much less talented than in previous years.

And perhaps therein lies the problem.

We have seen over and over in college sports a highly successful or legendary coach retire, only to see his successor post great records over his first few seasons using the players the previous coach recruited. In college football, think Larry Coker at Miami. The Hurricanes continued to dominate while Butch Davis’ recruits were at the U. Once they had all moved on to the NFL, Coker was unable to similarly stock the cupboard. For a basketball example, look no further than the Mike Davis era after Bob Knight retired. Davis took highly recruited players like Jared Jeffries, Dane Fife, and AJ Moye to an NCAA title game — seeming to be the perfect antidone to Knight’s bombastic coaching style, but reaping the results of Knight’s ability to teach and (at least back then) recruit.

But what happened to Coker and Davis after a few years? They failed…gradually but, ultimately, miserably. And both programs are still picking up the pieces.

Are these past four games the beginning of the demise for Wisconsin? And if so, should Wisconsin cut its losses now and bring in an experienced or successful up-and-coming coach to stop the bleeding?

I can’t answer that. I don’t really follow Wisconsin enough and, admittedly, have not watched them play. Perhaps some of you Badger fans can chime in with comments. Does this year’s team look less talented? Has the level of play, discipline, and strategic decision-making diminished substantially since Barry Alvarez left the sidelines and became the Athletic Director? I would be interested to know the answers from people who are informed.

Because the reality is this: if the answers to the questions I just posed are “yes” then the leadership of Wisconsin’s athletic department should act swiftly. If Bielema is in over his head, if he is great guy but just a glorified coordinator or position coach (like Mike Davis was), and if he can’t effectively bring talent to Madison, then this four game slide will be the beginning of a trend and not just a hiccup. I’ve seen it happen too often, and seen athletic departments wait way too long to pull the trigger for change when all of the symptoms of current and future mediocrity are present.

Unfortunately, it looks like Indiana might have done that with Bill Lynch in the aftermatch of Terry Hoeppner’s tragic death and the Hoosiers’ exciting run to a bowl game last year. The problem is that, while Lynch coached under Terry Hoeppner, he was an assistant for a reason. He is a solid tactical coach and teacher, but perhaps not the charismatic leader and program steward that a successful college football program needs.

When someone is miscast in a role, as these last four games have shown that Bret Bielema may be, it requires acute foresight from the leadership above to make a decision in the best interest of the school. Patience may be a virtue, but so is judgment. The ideal, obviously, is to combine both; to give coaches enough time to prove themselves, but not to run a program into the ground if they can’t.

I don’t think it’s time for Bret Bielema fired, but it certainly is time for the Barry Alvarez and the Badger athletic department to be vigilantly on point. If Bielema is not the guy, he could unwittingly lead the erosion of the tradition that Barry Alvarez built up. This happened at Indiana, it happened at Miami, and Wisconsin has not built-in immunity to it happened to them.

Not every school can be like Michigan State in basketball, where Jud Heathcote handed over the reins to Tom Izzo and the program maintained or arguably even jumped up a level.

I guess the way I’d feel if I was a Wisconsin fan is that it’s still a little bit early to be doing Google searches on firing Bret Bielema, or creating www.firebretbielema.com, but I can certainly understand and relate to your frustration.
