With the city of Cleveland’s pride on the line, and with last season’s heartbreaking Eastern Conference Championship loss still fresh in the mind of LeBron James and Cleveland fans, the Cavaliers got a redeeming 102-93 win over the Orlando Magic, last night.

Mo Williams, who previously struggled in the Conference Finals, found his shots this time around. He scored 22 points (9-9) in the first half of the game, and added 4 assists. Williams finished the game with 28 total points, 6 assists, and 1 rebound. Also, an aggressive LeBron James scored a season high 36 points, with 4 assists, and 8 rebounds.

In the much anticipated Showdown between the NBA’s two self-proclaimed “Supermen,” Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard–Howard (11 points, 7 rebounds) outscored and out rebounded O’Neal (10 points, 4 rebounds). And, at the Free Throw Line O’Neal went 2 of 4, and Howard was 5 of 12.

Getting his second start in place of Anderson Varejao, JJ Hickson had his best game of the season—scoring 9 points, with 6 rebounds. And although he traveled with the team, Delonte West didn’t sit on the bench with his teammates. He was declared inactive just before the start of the game, due to “internal matters.”

The Allen Iverson to Cleveland rumor has been picking steam in recent days. What do you think? Would it be a good more for the Cavs?

There were swirls of trades and signings this off-season, and the swirling has continued into the regular season, and you know what? Not much has seemed to changed as we head into the early weeks of the NBA season.

There has been speculation on:

Stephen Jackson leaving

Carlos Boozer wanting out

Monta Ellis considering leaving

Delonte being on the block

And a few others.

But one rumor that seems t0 be picking up a lot of momentum seems to be a much tastier thought.

Allen Iverson to Cleveland.

Yes, that’s right. Cavs fans have heard Antonio Daniels as well, but those talks have stopped.

A.I. has been quoted saying he would consider retiring due to his role on the Grizzlies (A.I. has been coming off the bench). But, if talks between Memphis and Cleveland get going, A.I. might just reconsider (or if he is released by Memphis).

Now with Cleveland struggling, can A.I. be an answer to the Cavs’ early woes?

I’ll let you decide:

After losing to the Chicago Bulls by one point, in a game that ended on what appeared to be a blown foul call by the refs, LeBron James led his Cleveland Cavaliers to a 100-91 victory over the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden.

Many athletes and celebrities were in attendance and sitting courtside at the historic MSG to witness the Lebron James Show, including: former Tribe Pitcher CC Sabathia and several of his World Series Champion teammates (fresh from a New York Yankee Victory Parade); Jay Z; John Legend; Chris Rock; DJ Grand Master Flash; Woody Allen; plus Charles Oakley and several former Knick players.

Several members of the media had a field day, following James around and snapping pictures of him. Also, talk regarding whether or not James will re-sign with the Cavaliers in 2010 was the topic of the night. Not being one to disappoint, and being all that the local New York media hypes him up to be whenever he plays in their city, James put on a show for the spectators and scored 21 points, had 5 rebounds and 7 assists at halftime.

Although the night belonged to James, who finished with 33 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists; two of his teammates also scored in double figures. Mo Williams added 12 points, and Daniel Gibson scored 11 points.

So, with the Cavs heading into New York on Friday (11/6), will LeBron put on another show? Will Spike Lee be able to handle another blow? Will the Knicks be able to take another blow? Devon thinks not.

On March 5, 2008, LeBron James lights up Madison Square garden with a spectacular showing, dropping 5o points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals.

A near jaw jolt to the face of Spike Lee.

Spike probably rubbed off the boo-boo, forgot about it, then moved on.

Wrong.

On February 4, 2009, LeBron James comes back to New York for the second time. But this time, he feels like putting on a show for everyone, including friends as Jay-Z, Beyonce, etc. LeBron dazzles the New York arena with 52 points, 9 rebounds, 11 assists, and 2 blocks, barely missing the last 50-point-triple double since Kareem.

Simply, as the NBA says, amazing.

Oh, and I think that this blow to Spike Lee’s jaw, probably left a couple bones broken.

So, with the Cavs heading into New York on Friday (11/6), will LeBron put on another show? Will Spike Lee be able to handle another blow? Will the Knicks be able to take another blow?

I think not.

On November 6, 2009 — tonight — The Cavs head into New York pissed. I mean, they just lost to the Bulls at the Q. I personally feel sorry for New York.

Cleveland is finally getting their game in tune with Shaq, Parker, and Moon. They are incorporating them into the plays with more ease and patience.

Remember last year’s Cavs? They went on a 10+ game win streak after they lost to the Celtics in last year’s season opener. I believe that these Cavs are attempting to do the same, with the Knicks as the next victim.

But the question is, what will LeBron do?

Here is my opinion, take it as you want it. (Comment box is below)

LeBron will not, (repeat) will not, blow up.

Why do you say this Devon?

Well, let’s start with maturity. LeBron has shown us every year an improvement in all areas, especially on-court, and off-court maturity. LeBron realizes that there has been one goal in mind since the 2003-04 season:

To win a championship.

With this being LeBron’s final contracted year with his hometown team, LeBron is hungrier, more determined, and salivating more than ever for the taste of an NBA ring. This game will show just that, as LeBron DOES NOT go off.

Look for LeBron to continue incorporating the new-comers, Shaq and Parker. Look for him to show that this isn’t the Cleveland LeBron’s anymore, but that it is the Cleveland Cavaliers, and hat this is a team to be reckoned with. I mean come on. With Mo, Shaq, Delonte, et al, these guys have a solid squad and bench.

I do expect LeBron to go off in one category though: his passing.

LeBron knows damn well he has shooters. So, why not kick it out? With everyone (including the Knicks) expecting to see the “LeBron James Show – Part 3″, I’m sure LeBron will realize he can beat the Knicks without even dropping 20, and that’s a fact.

Sorry New York, you have the baseball team (who won last night), the two football teams…but no basketball team.

In the end, Cleveland will destroy the Knicks, LeBron will not go off, and we will all continue our simple, yet boring lives.

Spike, your jaw is safe.

But for those of you wanting a show, LeBron will put it on, but it just might not be tonight or tomorrow. The King knows just when his real season starts. Not in April, not in May..

..but in June.

But I could be wrong…and if LeBron does go off, please bash me. Comments always appreciated.

Take a look at LeBron’s two unforgettable performances below!

MSF's newest writer Boris checks in with his weekly analysis of the Detroit Pistons. After the first week of the season, it's clear to Boris that the Pistons need more teamwork and a healthy return by Rip Hamilton.

At the end of the first week of the 2009-2010 season, the Detroit Pistons are 1-2.

The new look Pistons opened the season with a 96-74 victory at Memphis, then lost at home to Oklahoma City 91-83 and at Milwaukee 96-85.

The road victory was a complete team effort in which the Pistons moved the ball on offense and defended the Grizzlies in transition and the low blocks. Richard Hamilton led all scorers with 25 points and Ben Gordon came off the bench to score 22, but the victory was marred somewhat when Hamilton stepped on O.J. Mayo’s foot and twisted his ankle in the closing minutes.

Hamilton was sidelined for at least the next two games, both of which followed a similar pattern. In the first half, the Pistons controlled the game, defending and moving the ball on offense. In the third quarter, the opposing team came out with greater defensive intensity on their part, and the young Piston team lost their composure, getting away from their team defense and playing 1-on-5 offensive basketball with the guards Rodney Stuckey, Ben Gordon, and Will Bynum trying to carry the load by themselves. This made it easier for opposing teams to defend the Pistons.

In the fourth quarter, the Pistons rallied, but couldn’t make up the third quarter deficit.

Hamilton’s presence in games 2 & 3 was missed not only for his scoring, but also for his ability to involve the frontcourt players and pass to them when they’re in position to score. In Hamilton’s absence, the Pistons other guards have neglected to involve the Pistons’ big men on the offense, resulting in low team assist totals during the last two games. The other guards must develop the passing mentality for themselves, especially if Hamilton’s absence extends into the second week.

Ben Wallace has played solidly in the first week, being the frontcourt’s defensive and rebounding mainstay. It’s Coach Kuester’s intent to monitor his minutes, but taking Wallace out has been difficult.

Kwame Brown has been solid when on the court, but his minutes were limited and he wasn’t involved in the offense by the Pistons’ active guards. His playing time could stand an increase so the team can see how much of his preseason play will carry over to the regular season.

Charlie Villanueva has played well in spurts, but not for an entire game yet. The Pistons’ offense went to another gear when he scored as he did in the first quarter of the Oklahoma City game and the fourth quarter of the Milwaukee game.

Jason Maxiell has contributed with some rebounding and defensive play, but hasn’t made a major impact during the last week. Chris Wilcox, who is capable of putting up solid scoring and rebounding numbers, hasn’t played during the first week. I would speculate that Coach Kuester is perhaps giving Jason Maxiell a chance to prove himself. Perhaps in week two, Coach Kuester will give Wilcox a chance to prove himself.

IMHO, Pistons rookies Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko should also be given the opportunity to contribute after solid showings in the Summer League and preseason.

Oklahoma City is a young team on the rise in the West, anchored by Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and a solid frontcourt. Milwaukee is a defensive-minded team that’s a work in progress with a promising point guard in Brandon Jennings who echoes Nate Archibald. The Pistons’ games with both teams were winnable, but were lost because the Pistons didn’t play team ball at both ends of the court for a full 48 minutes.

The young Pistons’ current problems are correctable with the proper mental focus on “playing the right way.” If they don’t refocus in time, they’ll be in for some long nights next week when they play the Orlando Magic twice this coming week at home and on the road with a road game in Toronto thrown in.

Richard Hamilton’s return would be good, too, though it all depends on his ankle at this point.

Cleveland Cavaliers fans were excited on this Halloween Night to see Delonte West walk out of the locker room and onto the court with his team — for the first time this season.

Fans, dressed up as Ghosts, Ghouls, Goblins, Mummies, Cartoon Characters, Cavs Players, and Witches, all cheered as he did his shoot-around.

Those cheers spoke volumes to the Cavalier Organization, to Delonte West, and to his teammates. The cheers let them all know that Cavs fans gladly welcome the troubled West back into the fold.

And, he seemed to be in good spirits, focused on basketball, and ready to play the game. Also, he helped extend the Cavs winning streak to two, and improve their overall record to 2-2, with a 90-79 win over the Bobcats.

West coming off the bench in his first appearance of the season, received thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the crowd. He had a very good game, playing 24 minutes, scoring 13 points, and getting a pair of rebounds and assists.

Mo Williams lead the team in scoring with 24 points, LeBron James had 14 points, Anthony Parker had 13 points, Varejao scored 6 points, Shaquille O’neal had 8 points, Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10 points, and J.J. Hickson added 2 points.

Boston is off to a great start.

Not that it wasn’t expected, but who knew that the Celts would hold the Charlotte Bobcats to a total of 59 points in the C’s home opener. This came right after the Celtics spoiled the Cavaliers season and home opener as well. Then last night the Celtics took down the young Bulls squad 118-90, barely breaking a sweat.

It’s scary how well this C’s team is doing.

People have been talking about how LA has brought in Ron Artest, and how Cleveland should be fueled up on enough Diesel power to win a ring this year, but most people do not talk as much about this Celtics team, whose main acquisition was Rasheed Wallace. Without a doubt, this wasn’t as big as a Shaq or Vince Carter deal.

Even though I say this, I have one question.

Are the Celtics the best team in the NBA?

Here is a good point in support that they may be: the C’s are blowing out their opponents. They are averaging 101.7 PPG and giving their opponents an average of 79.3 PPG, a difference of 20+ points.

To me, this is staggering, because supposedly the Celtics were supposed to have a slow/rocky start. Glen Davis would be out, KG has not been on the court long enough to shake his rust off, and Doc still needed to find a way to incorporate his new additions:

PF Shelden Williams

PF Rasheed Wallace

PG Marquis Daniels

No doubt, the Celts are showing us they are still a force to be reckoned with, but let’s take an in-depth look.

Cavaliers 10/27

The season opener.

Cavs fans and Celtics fans alike were waiting for this one. Heck, all NBA fans were, and it showed as TNT has it’s largest NBA audience in their history of showing the game. But back to the point.

The Cavs were coming in with all the confidence in the world, as the media had been feeding the world that the Cavs are the beasts of the east. But that night, Boston had other thoughts.

The Celtics did not start off the way they had hoped, as the Cavs seemed to be running the tables early, and finished the first quarter with a 21-28 lead over Boston. Then, it all went downhill.

Boston finished the half well, scoring 31 points in the second quarter and only allowing Cleveland a meek 17 points.

This proved to be the decider, as the Celts held off Cleveland in the final two quarters by going blow for blow.

Final: BOS- 95 CLE-89

-Paul Pierce finished 23 points, and 11 rebounds

-Kevin Garnett added 13, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks

-Ray Allen put in 16, 2 rebounds and 3 steals and assists

and let’s not forget about the new face..

-Rasheed Wallace had 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks off the bench

A great boost of confidence for Boston, as they hold off the Cavs, even though having allowed LeBron to drop 38.

Bobcats 10/29

Time for the C’s home opener, and lucky for them they faced a non-playoff Bobcats team (insert NBA preseason Power ranking link)

Not really much to say about this one other than the fact that it was a damn embarrassment for the Bobcats.

The Celtics ran circles around Charlotte in nearly every aspect.

Defensively the C’s allowed Gerald Wallace, whom is Charlotte’s number one option, a team high 10 points. 10 POINTS!? Are you serious? Cmon Larry Brown, I think you can run your squad better than that!

Then the Bobcats were shooting up bricks from three, as they were 0-10 from the three point line. I’m no genius at math, but I believe that is 0%.

Then the Bobcats FG% was 31%. Absolutely disgusting! But don’t worry Charlotte, not your fault. The Celtics are just an amazingly good defensive team.

Let’s take a look at the score quarter by quarter:

Q1- Boston -22 Charlotte- 12

Q2- Boston -20 Charlotte- 18

(That is the closest Charlotte gets)

Q3- Boston -25 Charlotte- 10

(OUCH!)

Q4- Boston -25 Charlotte- 18

Poor Charlotte, but hey you tried right?

Final: BOS-92 CHA-59 (ew)

-KG had 10, Pierce had 16, Ray had 18

Chicago 10/30

A rematch of last year’s stunning first round playoff series.

But it wasn’t anything like last year..at all.

This was purely an offensive showcase for Boston. Chicago didn’t play badly either, even thought they lost. But you have to give this Bulls team credit, especially considering their best player is a second year player.

The game was intriguing in the beginning, as the Bulls were able to hang in there, as they ended the first quarter 21-17.

But from then Boston poured it on, dropping 29 in the second quarter. The third was Paul Pierces quarter, as he dropped 20 of his 22 in the third.

Simply amazing!

In total, the C’s put 38 in the third, and then the Boston bench assisted in putting up 30 in the fourth.

Defensively, Boston did a nice job on the perimeter, as they help Chicago to 13% from downtown.

Not the showcase from last year, but was a good game for those of us who didn’t have anything to do on Friday night.

Final: BOS – 118 CHI – 90

-Paul Pierce put in 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals

-Allen dropped 20, and dished out 3 assists

-KG gave 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal

-Eddie House put in 22 off the bench.

Conclusively, Boston is playing great ball, and should continue that way, as their upcoming games are rather easy.

11/1 – New Orleans at Boston

11/3 – Boston at Philadelphia

11/4 – Boston at Minnesota

In the end, Boston has a complete team. They have leadership, veteran skills, three point shooting, post play, athleticism…everything!

Next time you call Cleveland or Orlando the beast of the east, don’t forget the 2008 NBA Champions, whom in my mind, have simply gotten better!

After two straight loses to the Boston Celtics (in Cleveland’s long awaited and much anticipated home opener), then suffering a loss on the road to the Toronto Raptors, nervous Cavs fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief!

In what has been dubbed the Cleveland “Season of Expectations,” the Cavaliers finally got their first win of the season. In an almost “must win” game (in the eyes of many fans), the Cavs beat the Toronto Raptors 104-87, and five Cleveland players scored in double digits.

The NBA’s reigning MVP, Lebron James (who scored 38 points in the home opener, and had a triple double in the team’s first road game) scored 24 points, had nine rebounds and five assists.

Mo Williams contributed 20 points, Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 15 points, Daniel Gibson scored 14 points (going 4-8 in 3 ball attempts) and Anderson Varejao added 13 points.

It is obvious the the Cavs team chemistry is improving. In this game, they displayed great ball movement, the team went 10 of 18 on 3-ball attempts, and both Williams and James had 6 assists.

And, although he is showing encouraging by practicing and traveling with the team–Delonte West still did not play.

Excerpts from Tim Donaghy's new book "Blowing the Whistle" purport to do just that on the secret and shady underbelly of NBA officiating, including the 2002 Lakers-Kings Western Conference finals, which was officiated by Dick Bavetta.

Spent a little time this morning reading the excerpts from Tom Donaghy’s book Blowing the Whistle that currently is without a publisher.

It is important to remember while reading the excerpts — which cannot be described as anything other than explosive and damning, but not totally unexpected — that Donaghy is a convicted felon who seemingly spent a good portion of his career engaged in deceitful, unethical professional acts.

Thus, weigh how much validity his word carries.

It is also important to remember, however, that the NBA has been dogged by claims of rigged games and less-then-objective officiating for years. In fact, I’m sure my friends down here in Dallas will have a thing or two to say about Donaghy’s book as they recall Dwyane Wade’s star-making appearance against the Mavs in the NBA Finals…which was, of course, marred by controversial officiating.

Either way, the excerpts are intriguing enough to pass along, in addition to a terrific music video retrospective on one of the most controversial NBA games ever, and the subject of one of the excerpts: the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the LA Lakers and Sacramento Kings.

As mentioned above, Donaghy’s book does not have a publisher, purportedly due to some intimidation tactics by the NBA.

This could get very interesting in the coming weeks and months.

Look, I don’t know if everything or anything included in these excerpts is true, nor will I try to lead you to a conclusion one way or the other. Read it for yourself, consider Donaghy’s background, and make up your own mind.

But here is the problem for the NBA: not one word in these excerpts seems outlandish to me. To put it another way, if we somehow got verified proof that all this were 100% true, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

And that’s a big problem for the league.

A huge problem.

And it’s been an albatross around the neck of the NBA for as long as I can remember. Certainly, this is not going to help matters.

Here are a few choice excerpts from Tim Donaghy’s book Blowing the Whistle. You can also use that link to jump to Deadspin, where you can read the complete selection of excerpts that have been made available.

On gambling refs:

To have a little fun at the expense of the worst troublemakers, the referees working the game would sometimes make a modest friendly wager amongst themselves: first ref to give one of the bad boys a technical foul wouldn’t have to tip the ball boy that night. In the NBA, ball boys set up the referees’ locker room and keep it stocked with food and beer for the postgame meal. We usually ran the kid ragged with a variety of personal requests and then slipped him a $20 bill. Technically, the winner of the bet won twice-he didn’t have to pay the kid and he got to call a T on Mr. Foul-Mouthed Big-Shot Du Jour.

After the opening tip, it was hilarious as the three of us immediately focused our full attention on the intended victim, waiting for something, anything, to justify a technical foul. If the guy so much as looked at one of us and mumbled, we rang him up. Later in the referees’ locker room, we would down a couple of brews, eat some chicken wings, and laugh like hell.

We had another variation of this gag simply referred to as the “first foul of the game” bet. While still in the locker room before tip-off, we would make a wager on which of us would call the game’s first foul. That referee would either have to pay the ball boy or pick up the dinner tab for the other two referees. Sometimes, the ante would be $50 a guy. Like the technical foul bet, it was hilarious-only this time we were testing each other’s nerves to see who had the guts to hold out the longest before calling a personal foul. There were occasions when we would hold back for two or three minutes-an eternity in an NBA game-before blowing the whistle. It didn’t matter if bodies were flying all over the place; no fouls were called because no one wanted to lose the bet.

We played this little game during the regular season and summer league. After a game, all three refs would gather around the VCR and watch a replay of the game. Early in the contest, the announcers would say, “Holy cow! They’re really letting them play tonight!” If they only knew…

During one particular summer game, Duke Callahan, Mark Wunderlich, and I made it to the three-minute mark in the first quarter without calling a foul. We were running up and down the court, laughing our asses off as the players got hammered with no whistles. The players were exhausted from the nonstop running when Callahan finally called the first foul because Mikki Moore of the New Jersey Nets literally tackled an opposing player right in front of him. Too bad for Callahan-he lost the bet.

I became so good at this game that if an obvious foul was committed right in front of me, I would call a travel or a three-second violation instead. Those violations are not personal fouls, so I was still in the running to win the bet. The players would look at me with disbelief on their faces as if to say, “What the hell was that?”

On the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and Kings:

Studying under Dick Bavetta for 13 years was like pursuing a graduate degree in advanced game manipulation. He knew how to marshal the tempo and tone of a game better than any referee in the league, by far. He also knew how to take subtle-and not so subtle-cues from the NBA front office and extend a playoff series or, worse yet, change the complexion of that series.

The 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings presents a stunning example of game and series manipulation at its ugliest. As the teams prepared for Game 6 at the Staples Center, Sacramento had a 3–2 lead in the series. The referees assigned to work Game 6 were Dick Bavetta, Bob Delaney, and Ted Bernhardt. As soon as the referees for the game were chosen, the rest of us knew immediately that there would be a Game 7. A prolonged series was good for the league, good for the networks, and good for the game. Oh, and one more thing: it was great for the big-market, star-studded Los Angeles Lakers.

In the pregame meeting prior to Game 6, the league office sent down word that certain calls-calls that would have benefitted the Lakers — were being missed by the referees. This was the type of not-so-subtle information that I and other referees were left to interpret. After receiving the dispatch, Bavetta openly talked about the fact that the league wanted a Game 7.

“If we give the benefit of the calls to the team that’s down in the series, nobody’s going to complain. The series will be even at three apiece, and then the better team can win Game 7,” Bavetta stated.

As history shows, Sacramento lost Game 6 in a wild come-from-behind thriller that saw the Lakers repeatedly sent to the foul line by the referees. For other NBA referees watching the game on television, it was a shameful performance by Bavetta’s crew, one of the most poorly officiated games of all time.

A quick interlude here for a little more on that Lakers-Kings game. In the comment section of the Deadspin post I found this sublimely done video retrospective of that game. It’s worth the 4:30 to watch it.

More on Dick Bavetta:

The 2002 series certainly wasn’t the first or last time Bavetta weighed in on an important game. He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail Blazers. The Lakers were down by 13 at the start of the fourth quarter when Bavetta went to work. The Lakers outscored Portland 31–13 in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game and the series. It certainly didn’t hurt the Lakers that they got to shoot 37 free throws compared to a paltry 16 for the Trail Blazers.

Two weeks before the 2003–04 season ended, Bavetta and I were assigned to officiate a game in Oakland. That afternoon before the tip-off, we were discussing an upcoming game on our schedule. It was the last regular-season game we were scheduled to work, pitting Denver against San Antonio. Denver had lost a game a few weeks prior because of a mistake made by the referees, a loss that could be the difference between them making or missing the playoffs. Bavetta told me Denver needed the win and that it would look bad for the staff and the league if the Nuggets missed the playoffs by one game. There were still a few games left on the schedule before the end of the season, and the standings could potentially change. But on that day in Oakland, Bavetta looked at me and casually stated, “Denver will win if they need the game. That’s why I’m on it.”

I was thinking, How is Denver going to win on the road in San Antonio? At the time, the Spurs were arguably the best team in the league. Bavetta answered my question before it was asked.

“Duncan will be on the bench with three fouls within the first five minutes of the game,” he calmly stated.

Bavetta went on to inform me that it wasn’t the first time the NBA assigned him to a game for a specific purpose. He cited examples, including the 1993 playoff series when he put New Jersey guard Drazen Petrovic on the bench with quick fouls to help Cleveland beat the Nets. He also spoke openly about the 2002 Los Angeles–Sacramento series and called himself the NBA’s “go-to guy.”

As it turned out, Denver didn’t need the win after all; they locked up a spot in the playoffs before they got to San Antonio. In a twist of fate, it was the Spurs that ended up needing the win to have a shot at the division title, and Bavetta generously accommodated. In our pregame meeting, he talked about how important the game was to San Antonio and how meaningless it was to Denver, and that San Antonio was going to get the benefit of the calls that night. Armed with this inside information, I called Jack Concannon before the game and told him to bet the Spurs.

To no surprise, we won big. San Antonio blew Denver out of the building that evening, winning by 26 points. When Jack called me the following morning, he expressed amazement at the way an NBA game could be manipulated. Sobering, yes; amazing, no. That’s how the game is played in the National Basketball Association.

Opening night of the 2009-10 NBA season is upon us and there is a tasty slate of games for NBA fans to sink their teeth into. Devon previews the opening night TV schedule on TNT and the marquee games of opening week.

Kobe Bryant jumps in the air, giving a sweet vision back in time to Jordan’s celebration after knocking down the buzzer-beater that put a dagger in the heart of Karl Malone and Jazz fans alike. Watching was a sea of blue and white disappointed fans.

Yes, the Lakers were 2009 NBA Champions as they finished off the Orlando Magic in 5 games. What an incredible season.

A season that included LeBron finally being able to crown himself the best in the 08-09 season with a much deserved MVP award. A season where Dwight Howard showed us REALLY how to play defense, as he stole the 08-09 season’s Defensive Player of the Year. A season where Dwyane Wade put on a show nearly every night in Miami.

Yes, the season was great even for Knicks, Jazz, Hornets and all NBA fans alike…because regardless of how your teams performed, the individual performances were spectacular.

But that season is over.

Then came the 09 NBA Draft, which included numerous potential future stars such as Blake Briffin (1st overall pick), Ricky Rubio (In spain… dammit) and Taj Gibson (to Chicago).

Then onto the FA signing period, which turned out to be a bonanza (but will be nothing compared to the ‘10 off-season). Ron Artest moved to LA hopeing he can help the Lakers go back to back. Rasheed Wallace went to Boston, adding a great, versatile big man to the rotation. Then came one of the most lopsided trades, like Shaquille O’neal to the Cavs for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic.

Then came training camp, then the pre-season, where all the young rooks were able to show off their much worked on game.

Yes, that is all over now. The rosters are set, and the players are quenching for a new season just as us fans are. No doubt this will be an incredible year, but will it be one of the greatest of all-time? Well, let me introduce you to my opening article on the NBA’s opening week.

Opening Week

You’re not going to get too many great games like this, as the Cleveland Cavaliers play host to the Boston Celtics. This was the same opening game last year, but this one will be much more “fluffed”. Meaning this game will have much more to offer. Such as:

Will the Cavs be able to show us they are still the best home team in the NBA?

How will the three headed monster of LeBron, Mo and Shaq work together?

Will the newly acquired Anthony Parker show us he can still be good enough to help Cleveland in the post-season?

How will the duo of Rasheed and KG work out?

Are Paul, and Ray still going to be as dynamic as we’ve seen in past years?

Have Rondo and Perkins brought more to the table?

No doubt, this game will be a much watched game. I mean, cmon. It’s LeBron vs Boston. Period.

Boston-Cleveland game time: 7:35 PM ET/ TNT on Tuesday, 10/27

Then there’s game two of opening night, as the two Staples Center teams battle it out.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Los Angeles Clippers.

This is a very intriguing game to me as well. Not only do we get to see Ron Ron, but we get to see the number 1 overall pick play as well. [Editor's note: Oops...not so much on the #1 pick. Late breaking news last night has Blake Griffin out for six weeks with a broken kneecap.]

Here’s a few things to look out for:

How will Artest handle the pressure under the big lights of LA?

How will he show he is good enough to play with the defending champions?

Will Kobe show any signs of rusting?

How are Bynum’s knees?

What will Blake Griffin bring to the table for the Clips’? [Editor's note: not much tonight.]

How will Baron Davis react to the franchise this year?

Another great game. I mean, it may not be as competitive as the first, but Blake Griffin has [Editor's note: well, at least he would have had] the opportunity to play his first ever NBA game against one of the Top-10 Greatest of All Time (And yes, Kobe is Top 1o All-Time).

Clippers-Lakers game time: 10:00 PM ET/ TNT on Tuesday, 10/27

A great set of games to watch for any basketball fan.

Kobe and LeBron. Nuff said.

Then the less “bigger games,” as some may call them. But heck, I’m really psyched to see Washington take on Dallas in Dallas.

I’ve heard a lot about Dirk this off-season. Supposedly he’s developed a near impossible shot to defend. Some sort of a sky hook or whatever. Should be a dandy to watch. Here’s a few things to look for:

How will Sean Marion play alongside Kidd, and Dirk?

Can Erik Dampier give us more now, due to the fact that Brandon Bass is gone to Orlando?

Will Kidd showing any signs of aging?

How will Gilbert Arenas fare in a long awaited season-opener?

How will Foye and Miller compliment the trio Washington already has?

Good game. These teams are pretty close when it comes to skill sets, even though I give the advantage to Dallas.

Dallas-Washington game time: 8:30 PM ET on Tuesday, 10/27

Here’s another good game for you NBA heads. The Utah Jazz pay a visit to the Denver Nuggets. Should be a good Western Conference match up to watch. Look for:

Will Melo bring more to the table this year? (like he hasn’t brought enough)

Does Chauncey still have the legs to run an offense?

How will Denver show us some improvements from last season?

Will Carlos Boozer be a distraction for Utah?

What’s Deron Williams improved on?

I like this game, as it is a battle of the PG’s. The young gun vs the old chap.

Utah-Denver game time: 10:30 PM ET/ESPN on Wednesday, 10/28

Here’s a game that features a title contender. The San Antonio Spurs take their new look team to Chicago against the Bulls. I personally love the Chicago Bulls. They are energetic, youthful, and have a strong young leader in Derrick Rose. But on the other hand, Richard Jefferson will be able to showcase to SA fans how he can help in a possible Finals run. Here’s what to look for:

How will Jefferson look with Timmy, Manu and TP on the court?

Will McDeyess be able to overcome his age?

Is Tim Duncan still as dominant?

How has Derrick Rose improved?

What can Taj Gibson bring to Chicago?

How will Chicago fair without Ben Gordon?

Great game to watch, even though this is pretty much a lob sided game, I love to watch Rose, and can’t wait to see what RJ can do for San Antonio

Spurs-Bulls game time: 8:00 PM ET/ESPN on Thursday, 10/29

Here’s a game of mediocre teams, but great headlines, as the Oklahoma City Thunder take it to Motown to take on Detroit. Kevin Durant has to show us who he is, and what he will be. Then on the other hand, Charlie V. and Ben Gordon try to reverse Detroit’s recent problems. Take a look:

Will Kevin Durant show us more?

How will James Harden fit in with Oklahoma City?

What about Russel Westbrook?

Will the back court of Hamilton, Stuckey and Ben Gordon work?

What will Villanueva bring to Detroit?

Great game for those of you who just want to kick back, and watch two teams battle it out!

Pistons-Thunder game time: 8:00 PM ET on Saturday, 10/31

Welcome back Hedo, or well welcome to Toronto, Magic! Hedo Turkoglu faces off against his former team, the Magic. This should be an awesome game to watch. I, as well as many others are excited to watch the Bosh-Hedo combo. Not only that, have the Magic downgraded, or are they ready to take on the best in the league again? Let’s take a look:

How will Hedo and Bosh work out?

Will Dwight be even more of a monster?

Will Bosh be as committed this year as the rest?

How will Carter fair with the Magic’s offensive style?

I’m really looking forward to watching Hedo with Bosh. Also Vincanity playing alongside Nelson, Howard and Lewis.

Magic-Raptors game time: 1:00 PM ET on Sunday, 11/1

Without a doubt, this NBA season is already revving me up. Especially this first week (even though my Finals picks Cleveland and LA won’t play eachother). I’m ready for this season to begin. The only question remaining is:

Are you?

Devon provides his first set of NBA Power Rankings for the 2009-10 season. The defending champs and Phil Jackson stay at #1, but how long before another Western Conference team makes the list?

Welcome to a new feature on MSF: Devon’s Weekly NBA Power Rankings.

I will be posting once a week (every Monday) MSF’s version of the NBA Power Rankings. Not only will I be posting the rankings for viewers like yourself to view, but you will be able to comment and give me any input you would like.

So, I would like to introduce to you my first power rankings as we head into the 2009-10 NBA Season:

The Contenders

1. Los Angeles Lakers:
This should be no suprise to anyone at all. The Lakers not only have have nearly the same squad that won last year’s championship, but they have upgraded. The Lakers released SF Trevor Ariza and obtained SF Ron Artest. Kobe Bryant is still in the race with LeBron for world’s best, Pau Gasol has just come off a FIBA European championship with Spain, and Phil Jackson still knows how to coach. I see these guys threatening the 95-96 Bulls.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers:
“..the perfect team”, according to newly acquired Cavs C Shaquille Oneal. I don’t think I can disagree, but I also don’t think I can completely agree. These guys were great last year (regular season), finishing with an NBA best 66-16 record. But, we all know how the season ended. Now this off-season, the Cavs have added length, size, shooting, and depth; everything they needed. Now it’s all up to the role players to show us they can stay “hot” in April, May and hopefully June. If they do, expect the King to return to his Cleveland throne.

3. Boston Celtics:
The Celts have had an interesting off-season, losing Starbury, Leon Powe and Mikki Moore. They also gained Rasheed Wallace, and I’m almost postive we will see an improved Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins next season. But none of these will be the major factors heading into the post-season. It will be if KG knees can last, because if they do, the Boston 3 Party just might give Cleveland trouble in the ECF.

4. Orlando Magic:
The Magic have downgraded. Yes, that’s right. They have lost Hedo, Rafer, Courntey, and a couple others. Who have they gained? Vince Carter. Don’t get me wrong, Carter is a great player, but he does not balance out what they have lost. There is one player that can make up for all of this, one player who can bring the Magic over the Celtics possibly. That is Jameer Nelson, yes Jameer Nelson. We all know what Howard and Lewis will do, but if Nelson can stay healthy and show us a couple improvements, it will be one heck of a battle to reach the ECF.

5. San Antonio Spurs:
Congrats San Antonio, you had the best off-season out of any team in the NBA. Does that mean you’re ready to take another title. Not necessarily. I’m not going to lie, they have a damn good team. Timmy, Manu, TP, and newly acquired Richard Jefferson, and they have a good bench as well with Mason and Bonner. But in the end, I believe that LA will be too much, and they will take it from SA, rather than SA losing it themselves.

The Contending Underdogs

6. Denver Nuggets:
These guys didn’t do much this off-season other than re-signing Chris Andersen, who is a great player off the bench. They have a solid squad; Melo, Mr.Big Shot Billups, Nene and Kenyon. Don’t be suprised if Melo has a (second) breakout year, and ends up assisting the Nuggets in the murder of the San Antonio Spurs, but when it comes down to it, neither SA or DEN will beat LA.

7. Dallas Mavericks:
Age is a big factor when it comes to this squad, just like Boston. The only difference is, Dallas does not have the skill level Boston does. The acquisiton of Shawn Marion is great, even though I believe his All-Star days are over. Dirk is still Dirk, and Jason is still Jason…only older. Dallas has a shot at challenging Denver, but in the end Denver will come out on top.

8. Portland Trailblazers:
I am still suprised this whole squad is still together. It is scary how good this team will be, especially if Greg Oden can show us what we all had hoped for. But for now, they are not ready to handle San Antonio and Los Angeles. Can they challenge Denver? I believe so. Watch out for a great year from Brandon Roy.

9. Washington Wizards:
Second greatest off-season. They will be the most improved team next season, with a healthy Gilbert and Caron, and the acquistion of Randy Foye and Mike Miller. I am definitley looking forward to a matchup between Washington and Cleveland again in the playoffs…especially Deshawn vs LeBron (lol).

10. Utah Jazz:
Utah is another good team, even though the highlight of their off-season was hearing the bickering of Carlos Boozer. I don’t see them beating any of the upper echelon Western Conference teams. I just hope for Deron Williams sake that Utah’s front office makes a couple decent moves during the season, and after the season so that Deron remains in Utah.

The Playoff Contending Teams

11. Atlanta Hawks:
The Hawks are probably one of my favorite teams…in NBA Live 10. They have a really athletic team, and have offensive firepower. Mike Bibby, though, will be questionable in the post-season as age seems to be catching up with him. But no doubt they make the playoffs.

12. New Orleans Hornets:
The Hornets made a trade: Tyson Chandler for Emeka Okafor. Did that do much? Heck yes, and for the worse. Okafor has not been healthy, and is not as mobile as Chandler. This will be key in pick & roll plays for Chris Paul. I do believe they will make the playoffs, but Chris Paul will have to put on a couple shows to get past the 2nd Round.

13. Toronto Raptors:
Nice job Hedo! You got the money you wanted in Toronto, you live in Canada now too! The best part about it is, you moved from a contending team to simply a playoff contending team! Toronto has a decent team, but nothing great. I’m looking forward to seeing how Bosh and Hedo will operate with one another.

14. Chicago Bulls:
I love the Bulls. Great young squad with Rose leading the charge. This doesn’t mean they will come close to getting a ring this year, but they are just a fun bunch to watch. Tyson, Noah, and newly acquired Taj Gibson are all looking great. These guys just might be the Eastern version of Portland in a few years.

15. Phoenix Suns:
The Suns don’t have much to look forward to in the future, because I don’t believe Amare Stoudemire will stick around much longer. Steve Nash is aging and it is showing, and they don’t have much else other than Jason Richardson and Grant Hill. It’s going to be a long year for Suns fans.

16. Detroit Pistons:
The Pistons solved their issues this off-season…well their issue: Allen Iverson. I love AI, but he didn’t look good in a Detroit uniform, nor did he play great in one. His style did not fit with the Pistons’ team play. Now with Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon joining Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, the Pistons will be a fun team to watch. Let’s see what they can do.

17. Miami Heat:
I was strongly considering putting the Heat in spot 19, but you know what came to my head? Dwyane Wade. He is simply amazing, and his game reminds me of MJ’s so much. But other than him and Michael Beasley, the Miami fans don’t have much to cheer about. Hopefully we see a bit more from Mario Chalmers this season as well, otherwise Miami doesn’t get past the 1st Round.

18. Philadelphia 76ers:
Philly is probably the most BASIC team in the league. Everything about them is average. Their D, their offensive game, their coach, everything! But I do like Andre Iguodala, that man can dunk! Philly won’t make it past the 1st Round in my opinion, if they make the playoffs at all.

19. Houston Rockets:
Poor Houston. Their future is uncertain with Tmac on the wrong side of 30 and their All-Star center out for a year. But there is a bit of light: Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola. I really like these two, but they’ll need more help in the end to make the playoffs. If they do. Houston will still have trouble passing the 1st Round.

20. Indiana Pacers:
This was a tough one for me. I had so many teams in mind, whether it be Memphis, Oklahoma City, or the Clippers. But in the end, I believe Danny Granger will be an All-Star and rally his Pacers around and possibly make a strong run to the Playoffs.

The “Looking Aheads”

21. Charlotte Bobcats:
Something about them says “suprise”. Charlotte has a great coach in Larry Brown, and a decent team. They traded Emeka Okafor for Tyson Chandler (who I believe is more valuable to them in the end). I expect a good year from Gerald Wallace, and who knows, these guys might be playoff bound..but I don’t think so.

22. Oklahoma City Thunder:
Kevin Durant. He is the now, the future, and the bright light for the Thunder. I love these guys in a couple years, as well as the Bulls, Clips, and Blazers. Will Russel Westbrook show us more? Will James Harden be a good fit? Will KD lead this team to the playoffs? Maybe. This one is up in the air.

23. Los Angeles Clippers:
Blake Griffin should have a great year with the Clips, which will probably earn him Rookie of the Year. But I don’t see them making the second season. Baron Davis will continue to have issues with the franchise, and there isn’t much more to talk about the Clippers…for now.

24. Minnesota Timberwolves:
Poor Ricky. He missed out on an opportunity to be apart of the making of a great T-Wolves team. They will sure be a force in the future with Big Al, Kevin Love, and newly acquired PG Johnny Flynn. Shout out to my friend Ryan Gomes!

25. Memphis Grizzlies:
Memphis has acquired the best player in their history! But they won’t make the playoffs. It’s funny how that works. Allen Iverson should have a good rebound year, and I believe he makes the All-Star team, while Thabeet has a good rookie campaign as he shares time with Marc Gasol.

26. New Jersey Nets:
The Nets have lost Carter, which probably puts them into rebuild mode. They have acquired a very good young talent in Courtney Lee. I also like Devin Harris and Brook Lopez as well. Sorry Jay Z, no playoffs, but maybe LeBron will sign in ‘10…or not.

27. Golden State Warriors:
Probably the most comical team in the NBA. Trade demands, teammates bagging on one another, and a roster with nearly half of them being under 6′6. I love Stephon Curry, but I don’t see Stephen Jackson nor Monta Ellis sticking around too much longer. Time to turn to rebuild mode.

28. Milwaukee Bucks:
The Bucks are another team with not much to look at. I like them re-signing Ramon Sessions, but they need to do more. Much more.

29. New York Knicks:
Hey all my Knicks fans! I like the drafting of Jordan Hill, great young big man. Sorry you didn’t get Steph, but don’t worry, say what all other Knicks fans say…”2010, 2010, 2010″

30. Sacramento Kings:
Drumroll please…with all due respect, my last placed team is the Kings. Great pick in Tyreke Evans, and nice job in keeping Kevin Martin there. I hope your two GM’s do something soon, because I have a feeling the Martin and Evans combo could blossom into something beautiful in a couple years.

Tune in at after the first week of the 2009-10 NBA season to get my updated rankings. Much thanks

The Cleveland Cavaliers traveled to North Carolina to beat the Bobcats, 102-96, in their second Preseason matchup. The game was not televised, but it was still evident by the loud applause that echoed threw the radio airwaves – the Shaq and LeBron Show was well received on the road.

Cavs Play-By-Play Announcer Fred McLeod, standing in for Joe Tait on WTAM 1100 AM, said that the near capacity crowd was a rarity for a Bobcat game.

Although the Cavs were a little shorthanded, with only 15 players dressed in uniform, 6 Cavs scored in double digits. Tonight was Daniel “Boobie” Gibson’s night, as he found his shot and scored 14 points, in 21 minutes. LeBron scored 11 points (17 mins), Hickson 15 points (29 mins), Shaq 12 points (18 mins), Parker 11 points (23 mins), and Mo Williams added 12 points (22mins).

Forward JJ Hickson got his chance to start, replacing the injured Anderson Varejao (back spasms), and he shined once again. The other starters accompanying him were: James, O’Neal, M. Williams, and Parker. While two players didn’t travel with the team–Jamario Moon (wisdom teeth extraction ), and Delonte West (personal reasons); Danny Green (glute contusion) and Leon Powe (knee surgery) were present in street clothes.

Other Cavs who contributed to the win were: Ilgauskas scoring 9 points (10 mins), Jackson scoring 8 points (25 mins), Karl with 6 points (22 mins), Barrett scoring 4 points( 14 mins), Watkins playing 1 minute (no points), and Jawad Williams playing 23 minutes (no points).
