Q&A with Jeff Pearlman, author of Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton

sweetness-cover

Twelve years ago today the world lost one of the best players to ever play in the NFL, running back Walter Payton.

He battled bile-duct cancer and died at the age of 45. Payton, often referred to as “Sweetness”, played all of his 13 NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, missing only one game.

During that span, Payton was voted to the Pro Bowl nine times, won the MVP two times, the Super Bowl once and is a Hall of Famer.

He is simply one of the best players to ever take the field. He is rated as the #5 player of all-time by NFL.com.

Author and Sports Illustrated columnist Jeff Pearlman decided to take matters into his own hands and write a book about the great Walter Payton, titled Sweetness: The Enigmatic of Walter Payton.

Pitchers v Position Players: Who Has a Greater Impact on a Season?

Justin Verlander

If you haven’t listened to Pat Suley’s outstanding QuickCast about why the American League MVP race should be a two-man contest between the Blue Jays’ José Bautista and the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, do that now. I’ll wait.

To make the case that Verlander is one of only two players deserving of the AL MVP, Pat enters the debate that arises whenever a pitcher arises as a legitimate MVP candidate: is a starting pitcher, who only plays every fifth game, as valuable to his team as a position player who plays every day?

NBA Playoffs Pre-Playoff Roundup: MVP Derrick Rose, Kobe and Bynum Rise, Up & Down Celtics and Heat, and more

Derrick Rose

Let me start off by saying it’s good to be back, my NBA readers!

Life tends to get in the way at times, and for a busy student, athlete, and social human, life tends to get in the way loads of times! Even my twitter account was quiet for about a month or so, but I’m back on that as well so don’t forget to follow me guys!

So with that said, I’m back for good and ready to deliver just in time for the playoffs!

Many things have happened since I’ve been gone. Derrick Rose seems to have made his case for the MVP award thus far as his Bulls have clinched the #1 spot in the East, while the new-look Knicks have had a rough time getting into a steady flow. But thanks to the guys here at MSF, the NBA perspective seems to have been covered pretty well.

So without further ado, here’s what the NBA fan needs to know going into this exciting post-season.

Will LeBron Ever Win Another MVP Award?

Recent news from ESPN’s Heat Index and writer Brian Windhorst suggets that LeBron James believes he and Wade now might not ever win another MVP award.

“When we decided to come together our Most Valuable Player chances kind of went out the window,” James said Saturday.

“I think they classify it as an individual award. They look at it like the less help you have, the more numbers you have then the better chance for you to win that award.”

Is Dirk On His Way to a 2nd MVP Award?

Is it time again for the German version of Michael Jordan to claim an award that he should’ve won possibly three times before?

Perhaps.

Dirk Nowitzki is the best international player to have ever entered the NBA.. Ever! Yet, the seven footer has never won an MVP award. Yes, he’s been in multiple 3-point competitions, and he’s been on the All-Star roster nearly every year, but we’ve never truly recognized Dirk for what he is: an MVP caliber player, who comes through season after season for the Mavericks, but yet, we continue to downplay his talent and importance.

Will we give him what he has deserved for more than year?

josh-freeman-fantasy-football-thanksgiving-week-stock-watch

With only six games left in the 2010 NFL season, it is natural for people to look for this year’s possible MVP candidates. This year’s most popular names are Philip Rivers, Michael Vick and Tom Brady.

Today however, we are going to look at a different quarterback who deserves the same amount of attention and publicity as anyone.

Josh Freeman.

Kobe Bryant Photo Gallery: The Finals Years

Kobe Bryant.

Many call him the greatest player in the NBA, and you can make numerous arguments in his favor. Some call him the greatest Laker of all-time, and you can make the argument for that as well.

Then, there are the few who deem him the greatest of all-time. That could be a stretch, but still, you can make it an argument.

One thing is not arguable though; Kobe Bryant is one of the best performers ever in the NBA Finals.

LeBron James Wins 2nd Straight MVP Award

LeBron James continues to add to his legacy, grabbing his second straight NBA MVP award this weekend.

He is already showing us that he is most arguably the best player in the NBA, racking up numerous records, adding on numerous accolades, going to the playoffs the 4 0f his 7 years in the league, making a trip to the NBA Finals, etc, etc.

Yes, LeBron James is doing it all, and is well on his way to making a strong case for being one of the game’s greatest of all-time, if not THE greatest player of all-time.

2009-10 NBA Awards Watch

It’s nitty gritty time people! The time of the year when March Madness is everywhere (Twitter, blogs, TV.etc), where the MLB season is right around the corner, and something I’m very excited for, is the 2010 World Cup.

But that all is a different story.

Right now we are in the middle of the NBA’s stretch run, and things couldn’t be any juicier for the typical NBA fan…whether you’re a Celtics fan and you can’t stop asking yourself why the green and white keep losing, or you’re a Laker fan and are wondering how much closer Dallas and Denver could be to the rearview mirror.

Then, there are the NBA accolades. The short list of star-studded talents, many of whom are future Hall 0f Famers. These are always lists that can be heavily debated until the end of time.

Well lucky for you debaters, I’m about to end (or start) the arguements right here!

NBA MVP Award: List of Past Winners and the Candidates for 2009 – LeBron, Kobe, and D-Wade

One of the hottest topics as the 2008-09 NBA regular season winds down is who will take home the NBA MVP award. Kobe Bryant won it last year, and is in the running for the MVP award again this year after leading his LA Lakers to the #1 seed in the Western Conference. He faces pretty stiff competition, however, from three other superstars:

  • LeBron James, Cleveland
  • Dwyane Wade, MiamiList of Past NBA MVP Winners - 2009 NBA MVP Kobe, Lebron, Wade
  • Yi Jianlian, Milwaukee (via Japan)

Just kidding on the last one. It’s early, so just trying to make sure you’re all awake.

Seriously, I don’t think anyone disputes that the battle for the NBA MVP is a three horse race between Kobe, LeBron, and D-Wade. For Kobe it would be his second MVP, while LeBron and Dwyane Wade are still in search of their first. And all three of them are worthy candidates who would be surefire selections were it not for the presence and greatness of the other two.

(Not sure who to credit the picture of LeBron, Kobe, and D-Wade to, but I found it at The Love of Sports.)

List of Past NBA MVP Award Winners - 2009 NBA MVP LeBron, Kobe, Dwyane Wade

So who has the advantage in this year’s race? Let’s take a closer look.

Kobe Bryant MVP Credentials

  • PPG: 26.8 (3rd in NBA)
  • RPG: 5.20
  • APG: 4.90
  • Player efficiency rating: +24.18
  • Minutes per game: 36.1
  • Lakers are the #1 seed in the Western Conference and no other team in the West was close.

LeBron James MVP Credentials

  • PPG: 28.4 (2nd in NBA)
  • RPG: 7.60
  • APG: 7.20 (9th in NBA)
  • Player efficiency rating: +30.88
  • Minutes per game: 37.7
  • Cleveland is the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference and will finish the regular season with the best record in the NBA and home court advantage.

Dwyane Wade MVP Credentials

  • PPG: 30.2 (1st in NBA)
  • RPG: 5.00
  • APG: 7.5 (8th in NBA)
  • SPG: 2.19 (2nd in NBA)
  • Player efficiency rating: +29.29
  • Minutes per game: 38.6
  • The Heat, coming off of their awful season last year and with a bunch of new, young players, have locked up the #5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Anyone want Yi’s stats? Okay good, I didn’t think so.

The way I look at it, this year’s NBA MVP race is actually just a two-horse race. While Kobe Bryant has been outstanding, and would certainly make a very good choice in another season, I think he is a slight notch below LeBron and Wade. While Bryant may be the most killer clutch player in the league, his numbers across the board this year are less than those of James and Wade. Plus, I think if you rated the supporting casts and coaches of the Lakers, Cavs, and Heat, the Lakers would come out on top.

So that leaves us with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, two guys who will hopefully be staging MVP battles like this year’s (along with Kobe) until late into the next decade. It is splitting hairs to choose between these two guys, but I’m going with LeBron.

Dwyane Wade’s stats are amazing, and he has literally carried a young Heat team with a young coach on his back. Without Wade, there is no telling how bad the Heat would be. Wait a minute, yes there is: last year; and the Heat were awful.

List of Past NBA MVP Award winners - 2009 NBA MVP LeBron, Kobe, D-WadeStill, I don’t think LeBron’s influence on his team can be overestimated. Just because he has helped to lift up and improve his supporting cast (along with steady improvement and maturity from Mike Brown) over the course of the last few years does not mean that he should not get credit for being such a leader. The difference between LeBron’s Cavs and Wade’s Heat is that the majority of the Cavs roster has had a few years to gel together. Mix in additions like Mo Williams and it creates the continuity and dominance we’ve seen this year. I believe that Wade and the Heat can develop something similar to what the Cavs have, but they are a few years away.

In the end, LeBron scores a little less but he rebounds more and is overall a more efficient player. And I think you have to give him a bonus for being the undisputed leader on the team that has proven itself to be the best over the long haul of the NBA regular season.

Like I said, you can’t go wrong picking LeBron or Dwyane Wade, but my vote would go to LeBron James.

What do you think?

Who will be the 2008-09 NBA MVP?
