NBA Draft Head Scratchers, Coaching Carousel, and Other Thoughts From a Busy College Hoops Offseason

From a sports perspective, this isn’t exactly the best time of the year for me.

Playoff hockey is great, but I don’t have a rooting interest.  We’re still about two months from the end of the marathon NBA Playoffs, which I don’t follow that closely anyway.  And I’m a Reds fan, but I don’t get to see many games, so at this stage of the season fantasy baseball is my main lifeline into the sport.

Consequently, I have found myself taking a dangerously early look at the 2011-12 college basketball season for the last couple weeks.

Photo Story: “Ever Faithful, Ever Two” – Starring Matt Painter, Purdue Pete, and Brad Stevens of Butler

matt-painter-brad-stevens

Earlier today, Matt Painter made Purdue fans sing out with joy when he announced that he will be staying at Purdue rather than accept Missouri’s offer to be its new head coach. Painter leveraged Purdue into taking more money out of its privately funded coffers so he could sign an 8-year contract extension, saying, “At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue, and this is a place where I want to win a national championship.”

That is why all across West Lafayette you could hear choruses of “…ever faithful, ever true, thus we raise our song anew; of the days we’ve spent with you, all hail, our old, Purdue!”

But just because Painter is staying a Boiler does not mean all is perfect. Many people question how Painter handled this situation, including Purdue’s own mascot Purdue Pete, which means Painter has some ‘splaining to do.

And in terms of winning championships, there is that tricky little situation going on at a previously harmless Horizon League “mid-major” that doesn’t seem so harmless, nor so “mid”, anymore.

Details of both aspects of the aftermath of Painter’s announcement are included in our latest photo story.

Matt Painter Update: Matt Painter staying at Purdue according to multiple sources

matt-painter-purdue

I cannot confirm that this is really what is happening, and it goes against almost everything we’ve been hearing all day, but it’s certainly worth passing along.

Fox 59 in Indianapolis is reporting that Matt Painter will indeed STAY at Purdue, rather than accept an offer from Missouri.

Matt Painter Update #2: “It looks like this will be a happy day for Mizzou fans.”

purdue-fans

Update: This supersedes everything you read below. It now appears that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was either full of it or misled or that Matt Painter had a last second change of heart. He is now reportedly staying at Purdue.

Not five minutes after posting my morning Matt Painter update did I stumble across this new information.

The title of this post contains the words of the highly esteemed Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post Dispatch (h/t @thebiglead), posted just a few minutes ago here.

It’s time for your daily update on all things Matt Painter.

Purdue fans: if Matt Painter goes to Missouri, it’s your fault! Signed, Purdue Athletic Department

matt-painter-missouri-nancy-cross-letter

Other than Butler being the Final Four, and I guess the Pacers clinging to playoff life despite a sub-.500 record, the biggest story in Hoosier State basketball right now is the possibility that Matt Painter could be eschewing West Lafayette for the vacant Missouri head coaching job.

Purdue fans are understandably in a panic, with reports indicating that Missouri representatives are set to meet with Painter today in Florida. Purdue apparently made proactive overtures to Painter last night, but the details have not been made public.

What has been made public, however, is a letter that Purdue Sr. Associate AD Nancy Cross sent to members of the John Purdue Club in an attempt to assuage the growing frenzy of Boiler backers.

The letter – which was forwarded to me by someone at Purdue, and which is pasted in full below – indicates that, from the athletic department and university’s standpoint, everything is being done to keep Painter in West Lafayette. It also suggests, not subtlely, that had more JPC club members stepped up with donations, the current predicament never would have materialized.

Matt Painter to meet with Missouri officials about vacant head coaching position as Painter-to-Mizzou rumors intensify

matt-painter-missouri

I believe it was Bon Jovi that sang/asked, “Who says you can’t go home?” In the case of Matt Painter, it may be more like, “Who says you can’t leave home.”

Rumors have steadily intensified over the last few days that Painter was the #1 choice of Missouri to replace the departed Mike Anderson as its head basketball coach. I laughed off the rumors at first, considering them absurd. Painter grew up in Indiana, played at Purdue, coached there under Gene Keady, and has rebuilt Purdue from rubble into one of the top teams in the Big Team. Why the heck would he leave?

Well I’m not laughing off the rumors anymore, and neither should Purdue fans. In fact, it’s time to get very, very worried if you don the old gold and black.

From Vahe Gregorian at STLToday.com:

Purdue coach Matt Painter will meet with Mizzou soon to gauge the school’s commitment to the basketball program, sources told the Post-Dispatch today.

A resolution to the Painter situation will likely be Wednesday. One source said it was better than a 50 percent chance that Painter would accept an offer.

Purdue fans, all together now: *GULP*.

I tweeted 140 characters worth of musings on said topic last night, but figure I can elaborate a bit more here, as this college basketball season seems to present more deserving men for Coach of the Year than in years past.

As we motor forward during March Madness 2011, here are the leading candidates for the top coach in college basketball for 2011.

Photo Story: Requiem For An Era – Starring Purdue coach Matt Painter and Indiana coach Tom Crean

tom-crean-and-matt-painter

On Wednesday night, the highly ranked Purdue Boilermakers head south to Bloomington for a battle with their arch rivals, the Indiana Hoosiers. In the first battle a few weeks back in West Lafayette, the Hoosiers played valiantly but ultimately came up short. In the friendly confines of Assembly Hall, the Hoosiers will be looking to salvage their season by taking down the hated and favored Boilers. Regardless of what happens Wednesday night, this game will most likely mark the end of a recent era that has seen Purdue dominate Indiana in almost every conceivable way.

After Wednesday, the Boilers will go as far as seniors E’Twaun Moore and JaJaun Johnson can take them in the Big 10 and NCAA Tournaments, but will then have to fill those gargantuan shoes next season. Indiana, on the other hand, loses only defensive specialist Jeremiah Rivers while adding McDonald’s All-American Cody Zeller to a lineup that will be more experienced and more talented than any IU team since Eric Gordon was wearing the Cream & Crimson. And with Tom Crean already lining up commitments from top in-state recruit after top in-state recruit for the 2012, 2013, and 2014 classes, the balance of power in the Basketball State seems to be shifting back towards Bloomington.

Crean and Purdue head coach Matt Painter recently discussed the relative states of their programs, and as expected MSF was there to capture the entire conversation. It is presented below, verbatim, in photo story format.

March MADness: 22 Pictures of the Angriest College Basketball Coaches in America

jim-calhoun

March Madness is upon us, so as part of our continuing coverage here at MSF I thought it might be fun to do something a little different.

Lacking any motivation to do serious bubble or conference tournament analysis, I decided to spend a half hour with Google Images and find some of the funniest pictures of college basketball coaches that were available.

The result is what follows, a pictorial celebration of the MAD in March Madness, featuring the coaches of the current top 16 teams in America, as well as five others thrown in for good (see: hilarious) measure.

The Unfortunate Truth

Matt Lawrence from Dallas Sports Fans (the illegitimate child of the Sports Fans Network) here with an investigative report that just may knock your socks off.

We all know that Jerod Morris purports himself as a big time Hoosier but I have uncovered some evidence that would suggest that Jerod Morris may actually be a fan of the Purdue Boilermakers. I have indisputable video evidence that Jerod Morris is no doubt a fan of Matt Painter if not anything else.

IU, Purdue Meet Tonight on Boilermakers’ Road to the Big Dance

IU-Purdue

While it is no longer a rivalry that inspires curiosity around the country, IU-Purdue will always be one of the most important games on the calendar for Hoosier and Boilermaker fans.

This evening the two schools face eachother for the first time this season. Matt Painter brings his 8th-ranked Boilermakers down to Bloomington for a 6:00 CT meeting with Tom Crean and Indiana. (The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.)

We can safely assume that Crean’s young Hoosier squad will go a second straight season with no dancing in March. Painter and the Boilers, on the other hand, are actually inspiring something rarely heard around West Lafayette: legitimate Final Four talk.

March Madness Viewer’s Guide: Second Round – Saturday Games

Note: This post is from 2009. To view our 2010 March Madness coverage, use the following links:

——————–

Three double-digit seeds will still be alive and fighting for their tournament lives when the second round games tip off on Saturday around 1:00. As I did yesterday and today, I’ll compile all of the relevant information on each game into a handy-dandy viewer’s guide. After a long week of work, a late night last night hanging out with one of my best friends ever who is in town for a visit, and probably a late night tonight, I’m not planning on waking up early tomorrow.

So I’m posting this now, lest I sleep all the way through to noon. (yeah right, “sleeping in” for me means 7:30 at the latest.)

Anyway, enough blabbering. The first day of the second round, as always, features a number of interestingNCAA Tournament Second Round TV Schedule and Point Spreads - Saturday Games games and compelling questions:

  • Will Ty Lawson be healthy enough to play for North Carolina? Will it matter, considering the Tar Heels are playing a team from the SEC?
  • Did Cal-State Northridge wake Memphis (and yawning coach John Calipari, right) up, or will they somnambulate tomorrow and get upended by Maryland?
  • Who will win the 3-point battle between AJ Abrams’ Longhorns and Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils?
  • Does Michigan have an answer for Blake Griffin?
  • Will I continue falling down the ranks in the MSF Bracket Challenge?

All of these questions and more will be answered beginning with UCLA-Villanova tipping off at 1:05 ET. Here is the complete schedule for Saturday:

So, I have mostly favorites winning again with the major exception being Memphis and Maryland. I’m just not a believer in Memphis. They are talented, and they should win, but they are facing a battle-tested Maryland team that knows it can beat anyone on any given night. And Gary Williams has worked tournament magic before. Memphis very well may prove me wrong, but I think this upset will be the story of Saturday.

And Matt Painter’s Purdue Boilermakers, I think, will carry the Big Ten torch into the Sweet 16. I just don’tNCAA Tournament Second Round TV Schedule and Spreads - Saturday Games think Michigan is consistent enough for 40 minutes to beat a team like Oklahoma that has a player the caliber of Blake Griffin.

Purdue, however, is proving that they have a very balanced attack — it is not necessarily explosive, and they are not going to blow many teams out, but they are effective. Purdue plays great defense and can harrass Washington’s guards, and Robbie Hummel really is a difference maker. If he can keep playing 30 minutes, he makes Purdue a really versatile team on both sides of the floor. I hate ‘em, but I respect ‘em. Tom Crean would certainly do well to model the way that Matt Painter has built his team around a core of solid, hard-nosed kids from the state of Indiana.

Enjoy the games tonight and tomorrow everyone. I’m sure I’ll be back at some point with some more random musings. And thanks for all of the traffic and support this week. It has easily been our biggest week ever, and obviously much credit and thanks goes to all of the readers who have visited and continued returning. I’m glad you’ve found our conference tournament and NCAA Tournament coverage useful, and we’ll keep it coming through the Final Four.
