In a sport desperate for stars, the two biggest, Beckham and Donovan, play on the same team. They get their second chance at a first title on November 20th at home (They lost their first MLS final to Real Salt Lake two seasons ago).

Was David Beckham leading us on over the last 4+ seasons? Did he plan things this way?
He, Donovan, Keane and the others win at home for his last match of his old contract to win MLS Cup for his first time. It all seems to be perfect timing. But, then again, it would have been perfect timing in any one of the previous four seasons.

Excitement for sports fans ran deep Thursday night as two thrilling events were unfolding at the same time.
The St. Louis Cardinals and LA Galaxy both took a 1-0 lead in their respective contests, but the teams went separate ways soon after their scores. The Cardinals lost their slim lead, and the game, 2-1 in the ninth and now have their series even at one game a piece. The Galaxy held on to their tight margin and made it a victory to advance to the quarterfinals in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Captain America came out in theaters on Friday, and it got me thinking: if I had to choose my sports version of Captain America, who would I pick?
I am not talking about someone who is a physical specimen like Captain America. I am also not just talking about athletes like Jim Thorpe, who might have actually been the real “Captain America.”
Instead, I am looking for an athlete who I would be proud to announce as an American athlete if someone from another country asked me who our country’s best athlete was. For example, I would take character into account (which automatically disqualifies LeBron James).
In looking for my candidate I decided to break it down by sport, picking one or more athlete(s) from each of the major three sports.

Tomorrow, the U.S. national team will play their final game of group play in this year’s Gold Cup versus Guadeloupe. With a likely victory for the U.S. to abound, a greater question fans of the national team may have is, who is playing and where, and to that end, who is the most important player on the field?
Of course by position, Tim Howard may well be the best player, but it’s hard to compare goalies when only one is on show. Instead it would duly serve any fair-weather soccer fan to know whom to really watch on the field: Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey?

While many Americans are enjoying their Memorial Day weekend, all of Europe will be tuned in to one sporting event: the UEFA Champions League Final, which takes place today at Wembley Stadium in London.
It is the most important game in soccer this year.
Many Americans are not soccer fans, and are not aware that Manchester United and Barcelona will be facing off in a game to determine the best soccer team in Europe. Many people just don’t care about soccer, and other soccer fans just might not be aware that the game is taking place.
However, there is a growing fan base for soccer in the States, and there are many influences on the growing popularity of The Beautiful Game.
For the second straight time, a much more spirited Ghana team has ousted the Americans from the FIFA World Cup in a 2-1 win.
It’s a bitter end for the Americans after such a great run through group play, including a comeback tie with Slovenia, and late goal heroics by Landon Donovan against Algeria; the goal that put the USA in the round of 16 now all went to waste with today’s result against the Ghanaians.

A second can change everything.
You could not invent a more dramatic ending for the USA/Algeria game. A 91st min goal by none other than Landon Donovan sent the USA into the quarters while also making American fans the happiest people on Earth.
With England up 1-0 against Slovenia, every minute that ticked by with the USA and Algeria tied meant doom and a very uneasy exit from the World Cup for the Americans.
Chances were a plenty for the US, but the ball would not go into the net. Close call after close call, and another disallowed goal by a non-existent offsides, could’ve put the US in the wrong situation.
One man, Landon Donovan, had other plans.

GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!
I can honestly say this if the first moment I’ve really been genuinely ecstatic about something that happened in a soccer game.
In case you haven’t heard yet, the U.S. beat Algeria 1-0 during stoppage time on a great goal by captain Landon Donovan. Team USA now moves onto the knockout round of the 2010 World Cup.
WOW, what a game. What a moment. [Read more...]
It looked hopeless, or, at least very dim, for the United States at halftime of their second group play game against Slovenia.
The U.S. were down 0-2, and it looked very dim for a comeback, but the United States, as they always seem to do, came back to get a much needed point in a terribly refereed game.
Sloppy defense early was the culprit, again, for the U.S., conceding a goal just 12′ in. This has become some sort of tradition for the U.S., and it almost bit them in the butt this match. Another Slovenian goal in the 41′ put Slovenia up two going into the half. It was looking very bad for the Americans, and their chances to advancing out of group play.
The Americans needed some leadership, and they found it in Landon Donovan.
Your Wednesday Link Dump is prepared and ready, complete with a link to an awesome quiz by Mental Floss that tests your knowledge of NFL longsnappers and Vice Presidential candidates. Yeah, that’s right.
Also, more proof that JaMarcus Russell is an idiot (like we needed it), more proof that John Heyman might be a big, fat, idiot (at least according to our friends at Major League Jerk), and a pretty insightful piece from one of my favorite blogs about why every blogger needs a non-blogger spouse.
Enjoy.
