Dirk and his Dallas Mavericks are overcoming adversity and might finally be ready to win it all

dirk-nowitzki-jason-kidd

Dirk Nowitzki’s game is unmatched in the NBA’s current era. In fact, as Jerod mentioned briefly yesterday, Dirk’s game has never been matched. No player in NBA history has ever brought what Dirk can bring to the table.

At 7-feet tall, not only can Nowitzki cause havoc in the paint, but Dirk has one of the sweetest jumpers from deep. Then there’s his ability to put the ball on the floor, and the cherry on top has to be his sweet, sweet turnaround-fade away jumper from the top of the key.

Add all of that to a consistent owner like Mark Cuban, a solid Mavericks team filled with a mixture of vets and young guns, and a solid fan base to support them through thick and thin, and you come up with an amazing result: eleven consecutive playoff appearances.

Yes, Dirk Nowitzki and his Mavericks are at it yet again, but do we really appreciate them? Do we really admire what Dirk has done for the NBA? Or are we so used to he and his Mavs being in the playoffs for eleven straight years that we take them for granted?

As unfair as it is to say, yes, we do take Dirk and his Mavs for granted.

But I’m here to remind you how this Mavs team should and will ultimately be remembered. I’m going to remind you of how dynamic, amazing, and incredible the Dirk Nowitzki’s game is, and how he has changed his game like Jordan, and how the Dirk Mavs’ might finally be ready to possess a Larry O’Brien trophy.

The NBA Playoffs: A Battle of Matchups

derrick-rose-carlos-boozer

The NBA playoffs are now heating up. The first round is long gone, and we’ve seen some amazing basketball up to this point from both conferences.

Whether it was watching the Grizzlies stun the might Spurs, or watching the Hawks take out Dwight Howard and his Orlando Magic in the East. Then there was domination from teams like Boston, Oklahoma City, and Miami.

Yes, these NBA Playoffs have been great, and are sure to get better.

But there is one thing that I have realized over the past few seasons: the NBA Playoffs are not about who finished with the best record during the regular season. The NBA Playoffs have continued to show me that no matter if you’re an 8th seeded team or the best-seeded team, there is always the opportunity for you to advance.

And why is that? Simply: because the NBA Playoffs are a battle of matchups.

The time has come once again my NBA friends!

The NBA playoffs are about to begin, and surely this is one of the most exciting playoffs I have seen in recent years. With new-look teams like Miami and New York on the prowl, we are sure to be in for a treat almost every night.

And let’s not forget the usual contenders like Los Angeles, San Antonio, Boston and the many other powerful teams seeking a ring!

Yes, the time has come!

And what better way to start my favorite time of year than to write and analyze each series’ matchups, advantages, disadvantages, and who I think will ultimately take it to the next round. I previewed the Eastern Conference Playoffs earlier this week. Today, we look at each first round series in the Western Conference.

NBA Playoffs Pre-Playoff Roundup: MVP Derrick Rose, Kobe and Bynum Rise, Up & Down Celtics and Heat, and more

Derrick Rose

Let me start off by saying it’s good to be back, my NBA readers!

Life tends to get in the way at times, and for a busy student, athlete, and social human, life tends to get in the way loads of times! Even my twitter account was quiet for about a month or so, but I’m back on that as well so don’t forget to follow me guys!

So with that said, I’m back for good and ready to deliver just in time for the playoffs!

Many things have happened since I’ve been gone. Derrick Rose seems to have made his case for the MVP award thus far as his Bulls have clinched the #1 spot in the East, while the new-look Knicks have had a rough time getting into a steady flow. But thanks to the guys here at MSF, the NBA perspective seems to have been covered pretty well.

So without further ado, here’s what the NBA fan needs to know going into this exciting post-season.

Cavs Shock Lakers

cavs-defeat-lakers

The Cavs may be the most inconsistent team in the NBA this season, but they continue to intrigue Clevelanders. And tonight, unlike many previous nights, the intrigue had nothing to do with losing.

Tonight the Cavs defeated the struggling – but still defending champion – Lakers in a 104-99 victory.

Can the Lakers Take the Heat?

Kobe Bryant never really loses sleep because of another team.

Sure, he did mention that Miami will be a damn good team, and he does mention how the Spurs and Mavericks are forces to be reckoned with out West, but the thing Kobe usually doesn’t do is dwell on something for too long.

Well it might be time for Kobe to start thinking, and thinking pretty damn hard, and possibly even worrying.

His Lakers were handed a gift-wrapped spanking on Christmas evening, courtesy of LeBron’s triple-double, the firepower of Wade and Bosh, and some suffocating South Beach defense.

Not only did this show that the Heat are where we thought they would be, but it also shows that the Lakers can be beaten, and that Kobe and friends need to start doin’ work!

Here’s What I Missed!

Well guys, it’s been a while, a good while, but I’m 100% satisfied to say that I’m back and better than ever for MSF!

I’m not going to lie folks, I’ve been straight up busy. Work, school, friends, family, all of that good stuff that life likes to throw at as every once and a while. I’ve been absent from my Twitter account too people, so I need some help with that…follow me! For these next couple weeks, please pardon my rust, and I promise you I’ll be 100% soon.

So, there has been a lot that has happened since I’ve been gone, right? Not only in the NBA world (which I cover), but in the sports world in general. There has been the LeBron hate, there has been trouble brewing for the Vikings, the Giants and Rangers played in one of the worst rated World Series ever, and soccer seems to be getting more and more attention in the minds of the Americans.

But with my first issue back, I want to take the time to present to you, the reader, with what I’ve missed during the tail end of the NBA’s offseason, the opening weeks of the NBA’s season, and my predictions of what will come.

NBA Finals Recap (Game 6): Attack of the Yellow!

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 6): Celtics – 67/Lakers – 89

As you can tell by the score, this thing was a smack in the face for the Celtics, and how quickly the pendulum has swung back onto the side of the yellow and purple.

After Game 5, there was the talk of Celtics and banner 18, and heck, I was even on that bandwagon. The C’s defense looked nearly impenetrable, but was I wrong.

NBA Finals Recap (Game 3): D. Fish Steals the Show

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 3): Lakers – 91 Celtics – 84

Who says age matters?

Derek Fisher doesn’t.

No matter what you say about Fisher, the guy comes up big in the biggest spotlight, night in and night out. Period.

And he did again last night in the 4th quarter of Game 3.

NBA Finals Recap (Game 2): Jesus Shuttlesworth Goes Off

ray-allen-finals

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 2): Celtics – 104/Lakers – 93

Well people, I hope you have your popcorn with you, because this was one hell of a game!

In Game 1, Ray Allen had 4 fouls during the early 3rd quarter, but in Game 2, Suga Ray had 27 points entering the 3rd quarter!

I can admit that I was dead wrong when I said the ONLY thing the Celics can do in this series, is slow down the Lakers in the paint.

Now, what would another formula be for the Celtics to win? Say, a triple-double from their boy Rondo, and hmm..maybe an NBA Finals record, 8 three-pointers by Ray Allen?

Yeah, that should get the job done, because it sure as hell did last night!

NBA Finals Recap (Game 1): Battle in the Trenches

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 1): Celtics – 89/Lakers – 102

So, what can I say from watching this game last night?

Well, I was right when I said that the Lakers big men are the key in this series.

Second;  Kobe Bryant may be one of the most unstoppable offensive performers of all-time. Third, the Lakers defense has definitely improved from the ’08 showdown, and that just could be the difference.

The Tale of the Injury: Kobe and LeBron

kobe-bryant-injury-update

Injuries.

They are one word in sports that we never look forward to…not even if this is a Yanks/Sox series and Derek Jeter just tore his achilles tendon sliding home. No sports fan will ever want to see injuries, even if it’s too a player on a rival team.

Why, you might ask?

Well it’s simply because we don’t get to see the leagues, the games, and the stars at 100% if guys get injured. If they get injured, for example, we don’t get to see the full ankle-breaking ability Adrian Peterson shows us, we never get to see if the Lakers would’ve swept the Celtics without Kareem, and we’ll never get to see if Ryan Howard can beat the single season HR record.

That’s the tale of the injury. And why do I bring this up as an NBA writer? Because the game’s only two non-human athletes are injured: Kobe and LeBron.

What does this mean for the NBA? How did they happen? How will this affect the teams? You are about to find out!

5 Things To Watch During the NBA’s Stretch Run

rajon-rondo-celtics

With the NBA’s All-Star weekend now in the rearview, we now have the time of year that many analysts, GMs, and others with a high basketball IQ like to call the “NBA stretch-run”.

This is when the fooling around is put to a halt, the charades and antics are all diminished, and when the stars get right to the point, which is proving to the rest of the league that their team belongs in the playoffs. Or even better, deserves to play in the NBA Finals.

Yes people, this time of year may not yet have the magnitude of the playoffs, but it certainly has a higher level of action than we’ve seen prior to the All-Star break.

With that said, here are 5 things to look for during the NBA’s 2010 regular season stretch-run:
