Editor’s note: Since the NBA Finals ended, MSF writers have been submitting and defending their top 20 NBA players of all-time. You can see the aggregate list here. The goal was to see where Dirk fell, or if he fell, among the top 20 players ever after his sterling playoff run this year.

Below are the thoughts of Jon Washburn, who does include Dirk among his top 20 players ever. He also has the most unique top 3 of anyone who submitted a list, which is why I asked him to provide a detailed description of his top 20. And boy did he. Enjoy.

When I was a kid, Jim Harbaugh was the quarterback of my beloved Indianapolis Colts. One season, we started out 4-0 (we were the last team to lose a game that year) and ended up making the playoffs as a wild card. We went into San Diego and beat the defending AFC champs before going to Arrowhead Stadium and beating the 13-3 Kansas City Chiefs. We ended up losing to the Steelers in the famous “Hail Mary” game, and I cried for what seemed like an eternity.

Who is the Best Point Guard in the NBA Today?

IsiahThomas

In my NBA Preview, I wondered aloud that you could legitimately make the argument for one of five or six different guys to be the best point guard in the League. Ever since then, that very question has been gnawing at me. Several of my friends have been begging me to delve into the subject further.

“If it truly is the Year of the Point Guard,” they ask, “then who holds the championship belt?”

Earlier this week, Jalen Rose surprised a lot of people when he boldly stated that Rajon Rondo was the best point guard alive. He then commented that Chris Paul was third on his list.

I was furious. As a point guard myself, I have been critiquing the position for years. I know I will never be anywhere close to any of these guys, but it’s always fun to pretend like you are an expert on the subject.

Isiah Thomas Overdoses on Sleeping Pills – Conflicting Reports of Hospital Trip

isiah-thomas-looks-on

isiah thomasThe world of sports-related news can be such a weird and confusing place sometimes. In reality, I guess that just means that the sports world is exactly like the real world.

This was my first thought after reading ESPN.com’s account of Isiah Thomas’ rushed trip to the hospital yesterday.  But was it really Isiah?

Here are the basics: Police say that a 47-year old man was rushed to the hospital on Friday morning after an overdose of sleeping pills. The New York Times and New York Post both reported that the 47-year old man in questions was Isiah Thomas, though they did not cite sources. Isiah Thomas, as reported by the New York Post, said that is was not him that was rushed to the hospital — it was his daughter; and the reason was not an overdose.

Huh?

The best quote in the whole story comes from Harrison Police Chief David Hall:

“I understand that this person claims it was his daughter; he is lying,” Hall told The Times. “It was definitely not his daughter, it was a male. We know the difference between a 47-year-old black male and a young black female.”

(Sunday morning update: The police have now more strongly rebuked Isiah Thomas for his “cover-up” attempt, saying it was his daughter and not him who had been rushed to the hospital.)

Well I would hope so. Hall also said the case was not a suicide attempt.
