A New ‘Movement’ To Get Dan Dakich Into March Madness

dan-dakich-tv

As we inch day by day towards another thrilling and highly anticipated edition of March Madness – because March Madness is always thrilling and highly anticipated – I continue to be struck by one nagging negative thought: there will be no Gus Johnson this March.

While no one can ever replace Gus, there is one clear way that the folks at CBS and Turner Sports can rise and fire a shot in the arm of their NCAA Tournament coverage for this year and into the future: sign up Dan Dakich as a color commentator.

March Madness 2011 Media Coverage Review

The annual 3½ week television run of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament sadly (or maybe mercifully) ended Monday night. I look forward to the event every year, especially because NOT ONE SHINING MOMENT (or even a dull moment) of it airs on ESPN.

Here is my critique on the television coverage, which was generally solid but did have its hiccups.

gus-johnson-videos-schedule

If you’re like me, the first thing you do when the NCAA Tournament TV schedules come out is check to see which games the great Gus Johnson is doing.

With the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 coming this weekend, and the intensity and stakes increasing, we need Gus now more than ever – plus it’s the last weekend you’ll get to hear him calling college basketball this year.

So here are the games Gus is announcing this weekend, plus a bonus video from Funny or Die called “Great Moments in History with Gus Johnson.” It’s predictably outstanding.

Gus Johnson’s Greatest YouTube Moments & NCAA Tournament Announcing Schedule

Update 3/21: CBS has released the Sweet 16 TV schedule and announcer assignments. Gus Johnson and Len Elmore will be out west, calling the Syracuse-Butler and Kansas State-Xavier games on Thursday, then the winner on Saturday night.

The three most exciting aspects of the NCAA Tournament, in order, are: 1) analyzing the tournament field and making your bracket predictions; 2) trying to figure out where upsets will come from and then watching them unfold during the first two rounds of the tournament; and 3) Gus Johnson.

I’ve already written posts about the first two, so it is only natural that I now write about the third.

The NCAA Tournament is exciting enough that Ben Stein could call every game and I would still watch and be enthralled. Luckily, CBS has top-notch analysts like Bill Raftery, Len Elmore, and Jay Bilas providing entertaining and insightful commentary.

No one though, and I mean no one, compares to the peerless Gus Johnson when it comes to pure, unadulterated enthusiasm.

Gus Johnson Madness: One of the True Highlights of March Madness

Note: This post is from the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Follow the link to view the greatest Gus Johnson March Madness moments as well as his 2010 NCAA Tournament opening weekend announcing schedule.

——————–

Gus Johnson Videos - Announcing Schedule for 2009 NCAA Tournament March Madness begins tomorrow afternoon at 12:20 PM when Butler and LSU tip off to begin the first weekend of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. But Gus Madness does not officially begin until 12:30 PM on Friday when Kansas and North Dakota State (upset alert!) take the floor in Minneapolis.

I am, of course, referring to the incomparable Gus Johnson, who is to March Madness announcing what Christmas is to holidays: the best.

Need a reminder?

Gus Johnson Video Classic: UCLA v Gonzaga

As I became awash with March Madness anticipation tonight, one of my first thoughts was: which games are being called by Gus Johnson? Still somewhat brain dead after a long day of work, and not remembering that I looked all of this stuff up this weekend for my NCAA Tournament Bracket and TV Schedule post, I readied myself for a Google search. Then I remembered that I already had this information.

And so, for anyone else like me who cannot wait to be entertained by the exuberant pipes of Gus Johnson, here is his first and second round announcing schedule:

Gus Johnson Announcing Schedule – NCAA Tournament First and Second Round

Gus Johnson Videos - Announcing Schedule - 2009 NCAA Tournament

  • All games in Minneapolis with Len Elmore
  • Fri, 3/20 – 12:30 – #3 Kansas v #14 North Dakota State
  • Fri, 3/20 – 3:00 – #6 West Virginia v #11 Dayton
  • Fri, 3/20 – 7:20 – #7 Boston College v #10 USC
  • Fri, 3/20 – 9:50 – #2 Michigan State v #15 Robert Morris
  • Sun, 3/22 – TBA – Kansas/NDSU v WVU/Dayton
  • Sun, 3/22 – TBA – BC/USC v MSU/Robert Morris

Earlier this week I picked North Dakota State to pull the upset of the first round with a win over Kansas. And then I had them beating West Virginia as well in the second round. I absolutely did not realize that these were games Gus Johnson was announcing — so it was not just wishful thinking that led me to these predictions. (Actually, it was a flawed, but fun and semi-useful, statistical analysis that led to the picks.)

But how great would that be? Little North Dakota State shocks the defending champions in the first round with Gus Johnson screaming the whole way. Like he does at the end of this one:

Also, in case you haven’t seen, the Big Lead reported earlier tonight that Gus Johnson got into a bit of an altercation at a Memphis restaurant over the weekend. The were no injuries, and it appears that no charges are being filed, but apparently Gus was in a bad, “surly” mood and got into a verbal spat with a restaurant owner. As far as I can tell from the article, it is not going to impact Gus’ ability to call the games this weekend. Honestly, that’s really all I care about. Anyway, time to wrap things up for the night and get a good night’s sleep before four straight days of wall-to-wall basketball begins. Before I sign off, I leave you with one more classic Gus Johnson video to enjoy. We’ll have to get by without him tomorrow, but Gus Madness is only 37 hours away.

Update: I completely forgot to include the following link, a rundown of the Top 10 Gus Johnson calls of all time, sent to me by KVB.  It’s a great post by David Gladow at the Pass Time blog on Nola.com.

Weatherman Jim Cantore on NBC Sunday Night Football as Sideline Reporter

jimcantore

What a week of football in the NFL, specifically in the Midwest. The Indianapolis Colts clinched a playoff berth with a Thursday night victory. The Detroit Lions fell to 0-15 and are one loss away from professional sports infamy. The Bears and Packers renew their age old rivalry tomorrow night. The Titans locked up home field advantage. And, of course, the Cleveland Browns continued one of the most epic crashes from preseason media darling to inept doormat with a 14-0 loss to the Bengals.

Since I have made my support for the Cleveland Browns well known on this site, I certainly do not feel like Jim Cantore Video | Cantore on NBC Sunday Night Football as Sideline Weather Reporterdiscussing today’s loss to the Bengals anymore. And because today’s loss has basically turned me into a bitter NFL fan, I don’t want to celebrate or discuss any of the positive NFL news concerning Midwest NFL teams.

No, we are going to discuss something a little different this evening: the true Story of the Week in the NFL. And it deals with the debut of the NFL’s next great sideline reporting star: Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore, who debuted as a sideline weather correspondent on NBC Sunday Night Football tonight. (At least, I think it’s it the debut. I’ve never seen him on SNF before, and a quick google search brought back no relevant results.)

There are a few ways that you might be familiar with the work of Jim Cantore:

1 — If you’ve lived in Miami (as I did for two years) or any other state along the Atlantic of Gulf coasts, you have no doubt spent many nights glued to the TV watching the Weather Channel for reports about impending hurricanes. And if you’ve done this, you have no doubt seen videos just like the one below. The excitement really picks up around the 0:50 mark when the wind gusts increase.

2 — If you used to be an avid listener to Tony Kornheiser’s morning radio show, you may remember that Tony used to have quite an affinity, and perhaps even a man-crush, for Jim Cantore. Case in point, here is an excerpt from a 2000 column by Tony Kornheiser when he was at the Super Bowl:

The five-day weather forecast calls for lows in the 20s every night, and highs in the lower forties. (True story: When I checked into the hotel I ran into Sterling Sharpe and Tommy Jackson of ESPN. They were carrying their golf clubs. Sharpe said to me, “”We’re playing on Wednesday. Wanna play?”" I asked him, “”What are you going to use to get out of a trap, a snow blower?”") Normally, the lobby of the media hotel has giant TV screens continuously tuned to sports channels. The weather is such an issue here that the TVs are all on the Weather Channel. So far, Jim Cantore is a much bigger star than Kurt Warner.

I wonder if Tony has ever seen this video, of Jim Cantore getting hit with a snowball on live TV:

3 — Or you may just have stumbled across the passionate weather work of Jim Cantore by accident. Perhaps you were flipping through the channels of the TV and decided to hang tight a second before flipping again when you the following coverage on your screen during the recent coverage of Hurricane Ike.

This following video includes the most exciting words in weather coverage: “And this gazebo’s shaking too much. That–you know what, we gotta cut this. We gotta cut this guys. We’re done.”

(Hint: Watch this one, or fast forward, all the way to the end.)

And, for our final Jim Cantore video of this Avoiding-NFL-Discussion-Because-the-Browns-Suck Sunday Night, how about a little on-air flirtation between Jim Cantore and something other than a hurricane. This video is entitled “Jim Cantore gettin fresh on camera with Alexandra Steele.” There is nothing egregious or outlandish here, but it is nice to know that perhaps something other than inclement weather can actually make Jim Cantore’s weather pole stiffen.

Just think how much more exciting the Ice Bowl, or the Tuck Game, or the “Heinz Field Fiasco”, or any number of other famous bad weather sporting events, would have been had we been blessed with the perspective and passion of Jim Cantore. He is like the Gus Johnson of meteorologists (with some Ed Hochuli physique sprinkled in for good measure). And now that Jim Cantore has made his NFL debut, I just pray that at some point in the future we are blessed with an exciting, down-to-the-last-play game that is played in a southern city in the face of an oncoming hurricane — with Gus Johnson announcing and Jim Cantore being blown sideways while giving us the weather report from the sidelines.

What is more exciting?

On a cold December Sunday evenings, while recovering from another disappointing Cleveland Browns loss, it is thoughts like these that keep me smiling.

Update: Sunday Night, 10:30

After posting this, I came across the Jim Cantore bio on Weather.com, which includes a few interesting nuggets.

  • “During the 1999-2000 NFL Football season, Jim was part of the “FOX NFL Sunday” team, reporting on the games affected by the weather.” — So I guess tonight was not Jim Cantore’s “debut” on football sidelines. And perhaps appearances by Jim Cantore will continue to be intermittent and based on his proximity to FOX games, and the probability for bad weather.
  • “‘Wildweather.com’ voted Jim Meteorologist of the Month for August 2000. In their acknowledgement of his award it read, ‘Jim Cantore pushes television forecasting to the next level. Much as Michael Jordan changed basketball, Jim Cantore has forever altered the field of weather forecasting.’ ‘This man means business.’” — The Michael Jordan of meteorologists. Has there ever been a more obvious case of hyperbole?
  • “Jim credits his Father, ‘who indulged my love for meteorology. Dad didn’t get too mad when he found me on the porch in my shorts at 2 a.m. shoveling the new fallen snow, or when his friends would call in the morning to ask me if they would have school that day.’” — The thought of a young boy shoveling show in his shorts at 2am is pretty preposterous. But for Jim Cantore? All part of the development of Michael Jordan of Meteorology.

Gus Johnson Joins Big Ten Network To Announce Mens Basketball

gus-johnson

gus johnsonI am a die-hard IU basketball fan, so last season ended about as horrifically and pathetically as I could ever imagine. Since the end of last season, however, there has been a succession of good news including the hiring of Tom Crean, a great recruiting class coming in next season, and my realization that Verizon is now carrying the Big Ten Network in Dallas.

But not even the aggregate of all of this positive news could compare with what I just found out when I went to the Big Ten Network’s official website: Gus Johnson has joined the Big Ten Network to announce mens basketball games for the 2008-09 season.

Let me try to express how I feel about this:

NFL: Joe Buck is a Massive Tool | Gus Johnson is Incredible

joe-buck

by Jerod Morris

As Lynyrd Skynyrd once sang, “Oooh, that smell. Can you smell that smell?” I know what I can smell, and for once it isn’t the stench of Grady Sizemore’s female parts since the Cleveland Indians are so waaaaaay far behind the White Sox in the AL Central Standings.

No, that smell is the first wiff of Fall. And Fall means one thing, and one thing only: Football. I could write an entire post about all of the many images, memories, feelings, and pangs of sublime anticipation that rush through every fiber of my being when this glorious time of year rolls around. However, I might crash the server due to the length of the post.joe buck blows

So instead, I will go a different route and highlight one of the few things about football season that I absolutely abhor. There aren’t many, and most of them are so meaningless that they are essentially infinitesimal. But there is one steaming pile of arrogant and monotone nepotism that hangs over the Fall like an unexpected early morning dingleberry carwash. And unfortunately, it hangs over October baseball as well. You all know who I’m talking about:

Joe Buck.
