Why This Year’s Buckeye Tourney Run is More Magical than ’07

Ohio State manhandled the upset-minded George Mason Patriots 98-66 on Sunday. That victory makes them another step closer to their first National Championship since 1960, a journey that will continue tomorrow night against Kentucky in the Sweet 16.

Although Ohio State was a two seed last year, they still weren’t a major contender for the national title. Their last serious run was back in the 2007 tournament when the Buckeyes received a #1 seed and were led by freshmen Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., and upper classmen Jamar Butler and Ron Lewis. The Buckeyes made it to the Final Four that year and eventually made it to the championship game before losing to Florida.

Although that was a special championship run, it still doesn’t compare to the run the Buckeyes could potentially be on this season.

Yesterday I wrote about the lessons that we can all learn from the unfortunate situation that Greg Oden has found himself dealing with.

If you didn’t hear, nude photos that Oden took of himself and sent to a female “friend” recently surfaced on the Internet. (BTW, it’s okay to click on that link…I didn’t include the pictures in my post.)

(shaking my head…)

There is no NBA player I am rooting for to have great professional success than Greg Oden.

nba season preview

Just so everyone knows. The NBA season starts this week…and not in February as is commonly assumed.

The off-season free agent period was pretty boring except for a few moves. But that’s okay considering the next two are going to be bloodbaths.

Some playoff teams in the East (Cleveland and Philadelphia) got a little bit better in the off-season free agent period. Some (Detroit and Boston) got older.  The West looks to be just a tough and grueling as last year.

Some of the bigger questions this year:

  1. Can Boston repeat? (sure…they could)…or are they too old (probably)?
  2. Is Kobe still the best player in the NBA? (nope).
  3. Will the coaching changes in Dallas and Phoenix take them to the next level? (No)
  4. Will Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley win the Rookie of the Year award? (No)

Here is my top 8 in each conference and my pick for postseason conference champions and the NBA champion:
