Brett Keisel’s beard is awesome. That we all know.

But I didn’t realize how awesome it was until I saw Keisel’s Wikipedia page.

Photo Story: How the Grinch Steals Ratings – An NBA Christmas Tale

david-stern

A few days ago, I received the following email:

admittedly i am a bit slow, but my target date for riley to replace spoelestra is christmas day.  come on did we not see this coming from day 1?

seriously, christmas day heat @ lakers… riley back in LA… you pretending i am stupid.

again, NBA = WWF.  lebron is too dumb to know he is playing the role of villain akin to iron sheik/undertaker.

jerod, start the countdown clock on the website…

With all of the turmoil surrounding Erik Spoelstra and his job security in Miami, this certainly is an intriguing thought and possibility.

And because I had so much success with this particular friend’s emails/message board posts in the past – yes, it was the same guy who inspired me to write this -  I decided that we should indeed start the countdown clock here on “the website” (It has a name, you jackwagon!). Of course, we don’t really do countdown clocks here at MIDWEST SPORTS FANS, so instead I decided to create a photo story that shows how and why this eminently plausible Riley takeover on Christmas might happen.

I bet it’s not exactly how you’re thinking.

Photo Story: No Laughing Matter – The Inappropriate Giggling of Derek Anderson

derek-anderson-laughing

Last night, the Arizona Cardinals were throttled by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. Yes, the same San Francisco 49ers who were themselves throttled at home by the Tampa Bay Bucs one week prior. Arizona lost because it’s defense was lethargic, it could not run the ball, and its quarterback was both indecisive and inaccurate.

Making matters worse, said quarterback – the infamous Derek Anderson – was caught by MNF cameras late in the game smiling/laughing (depending on your interpretation). Anderson was asked about it during his post game press conference and had his Denny Green/Jim Mora/Herm Edwards moment that will go down in press conference infamy.

As the dust settled today, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt announced that Anderson would remain his starting quarterback. He also attempted to hold a serious discussion with Anderson about his inappropriate and untimely giggling. What follows is a photo diary that captures the noteworthy moments of this critical conversation between player and coach.

Photo Story: A Tale of Two Matts – The Divergent Paths of Cassel and Leinart

matt-cassel-matt-leinart

Before the 2010 NFL season began, one of the most intriguing names in the NFL was Matt Leinart. With Kurt Warner retiring, Leinart finally appeared poised to fulfill his potential as he prepared to take over the reins of a high octane Arizona offense led by All-World wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Across the country in quiet Kansas City, Matt Cassel, a former teammate of Leinart’s at USC (his backup in fact), had no one even close to atwitter after an underwhelming 2009 campaign in which his QB rating was 69.9 and he threw as many INTs as he did TDs.

Before the preseason started, nary a fantasy football owner would have chosen Cassel over Leinart; but as often happens in the NFL, things have not turned out as anyone expected.

Cassel has become a revelation under second-year coach Todd Haley while  the erstwhile Leinart Era had yet another false start in Arizona that resulted in one of the most ignominious outcomes imaginable for a quarterback: being benched for Derek Anderson.

This is the unlikely tale of two Matts whose respective statures have done a near complete 180 over the last half decade.

Which Former Notre Dame “Legend” Looks Better in Purple?

jimmy-clausen-teletubby

Apparently the Carolina Panthers made their rookies dress up in stupid outfits for Halloween.

How do I know this? Because the blog Cat Scratch Fever has a picture of former Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen dressed up as the purple Teletubby. And on Clausen’s Twitter account, it says, “no just I dressed up along with all the other rookies lol.

LOL indeed Clausen. LOL indeed.

Immediately, I thought of another Notre Dame “legend” who looks good in purple. The question is, who looks better?

Video Clips for Schmucks: The Best of Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and Zach Galifianakis

rudd-carell-galifianakis

Off-topic alert! Off-topic alert! It’s still July and sports are still relatively boring (sorry, but T.O. in Cincy isn’t interesting until the season starts) so I’m going to trust that you don’t mind me foregoing an analysis of the White Sox 6-5 comeback win last night (yeeeyessss!) when the alternative is bringing in some professional entertainers to make you laugh.

When I first heard the phrase Dinner for Schmucks my initial thought was that someone was referring to a luncheon of MSF writers moderated by Ken Rosenthal. Naturally, I was excited.

But when I found out the truth, that Dinner for Schmucks is actually a movie starring Steve Carell, Zach Galifianakis, and Paul Rudd, I just started laughing. I hadn’t seen the previews, hadn’t seen the now ubiquitous “He’s friends with Morgan Freeman!” line, hadn’t even seen a screenshot of Galfianakis in a cape; no, I just figured I’d get a head start on my laughing because how could a movie with those three schmucks not be hilarious?

It was exactly the same thought I had this morning when I saw that Carell had joined Galifiankis for an interview while sitting on two chairs placed in between two potted ferns. And, of course, the latest edition of Between Two Ferns did not disappoint. It is embedded below, along with a whole host of other funny video clips involving Carell, Galifianakis, and Rudd.

Weekend Whimsy: The 5 Greatest Moments in the History of “The Final Countdown”

videos - the final countdown - funniest moments

As our regular readers know well, we occasionally step outside the realm of sports here at MSF if we think a non-sports post will be entertaining, funny, enlightening, or help out a good cause.

The fact of the matter is that I am in Internet junkie and come across stuff all the time that I think readers will enjoy and, well, until I have another site to post this stuff on, it will continue to get dumped on MSF…and hopefully you will continue to be entertained by it.

Today, I stumbled across a video of some dudes doing an a capella version of “The Final Countdown” by Europe. This song has one of the most unique and recognizable synthesizer openings in the history of music and, for whatever reason, has always caused KVB and I to giggle like idiots whenever we hear it.

Because I am a blogger, which means I am trained to aggregate and create lists, I decided to spend a few productive moments this morning rounding up the greatest moments in the history of “The Final Countdown”.

IU, Purdue Meet Tonight on Boilermakers’ Road to the Big Dance

IU-Purdue

While it is no longer a rivalry that inspires curiosity around the country, IU-Purdue will always be one of the most important games on the calendar for Hoosier and Boilermaker fans.

This evening the two schools face eachother for the first time this season. Matt Painter brings his 8th-ranked Boilermakers down to Bloomington for a 6:00 CT meeting with Tom Crean and Indiana. (The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.)

We can safely assume that Crean’s young Hoosier squad will go a second straight season with no dancing in March. Painter and the Boilers, on the other hand, are actually inspiring something rarely heard around West Lafayette: legitimate Final Four talk.

Video: Peyton Manning, Jeff Saturday and The Chippencolts

colts-dancing

Earlier today, TMZ reported that several New Orleans Saints players, including overrated star running back Reggie Bush, were out partying until 3:30 am this morning.

With the biggest game of their lives less than a week away, you’d think that Bush and his teammates would be focusing on getting sleep and staying rested…you know, like the Colts players are.

Or are they?

Midwest Sports Fans has uncovered secret video of what Peyton Manning and Jeff Saturday were doing last evening, and it’s quite shocking it…mainly because, if the video is to be believed, then Saturday apparently has abs.

Another Chapter of Verbal (Diddly) Poo Added to the Jim Mora Litany

jim-mora-videos-rant

As we head into what promises to be a fascinating Conference Championship Sunday, I can’t help but reflect on the funniest greatest moments in the illustrious YouTube NFL coaching career of Jim Mora.

Wait…what?

That’s right folks, Jim Mora is a name that you might hear more than once this weekend, and I’m not talking about the dude recently canned by the Seahawks. I’m talking about his infamous dad.

Jim Mora Sr. is a head coaching alumnus of both the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, two offensive-minded teams playing home games who could very well be on a crash course for the Super Bowl.

He is also the most unintentionally hilarious head coach in the history of the NFL, and this is Midwest Sports Fans’ ode to the incomparable Jim Mora, inspired by the unearthing of yet another f–king terrific video featuring a Mora rant.
