BigMB has posted his Week 9 NFL Power Rankings, and there is little surprise at the top. As Carlton Banks would no doubt agree, it's not unusual to have the last two unbeated teams ranked 1st and 2nd.

Another great week of NFL action: the Colts won (but looked human), the Saints continue to roll, and the Giants continue to spiral out of control.

It seems like every week brings more drama to the stage during what has been a very exciting season thus far that we are now halfway through.

One thing is for sure….THE REDSKINS DIDN’T LOSE THIS WEEK! (But the Browns did!)

[Editor's Note: There you go dick Myles. Keep rubbing salt in the wound jackass buddy. Keep kicking Browns fans when they're down you no talent ass clown my friend.

I can't wait until Peyton Manning retires and your one-man franchise returns to sucking and all of its fair-weather fans go away. Go ahead, shake your head. But you know it's true.]

Now, onto this week’s Power Rankings.

1. New Orleans Saints (Last 2 [+1])

The Saints once again flip-flop into first place again with a big win against division rival Atlanta.

Rushing TD’s, Defensive TDs, Passing TDs…this team scores however they want to, and it seems that if they score less than 30, its a debacle.

We may be heading toward an Indy-New Orleans Superbowl, and that makes me giddy.

[Editor's Note: Readers, please raise your hand if you give a crap what makes Big MB "giddy"? In fact, raise your hand if you are explicitly disturbed by the mention of Big MB being "giddy"? Ah, unanimous agreement. Just as I suspected.

You know Myles, there are Browns, Rams, Lions, and Chiefs fans reading this post who don't need to have it shoved in their faces that the two teams you root for are undefeated. What the hell have you done to deserve such a charmed NFL existence?

So shove it and go giddy yourself off on some other blog.

I hate the NFL.

Moving on, in honor of that kickass picture I found of Drew Brees and Alfonso Ribiero (aka Carlton Banks) I've chosen "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones as this week's Power Ranking theme song. Enjoy.]

2. Indianapolis Colts (Last 1 [-1])

Indy and Peyton Manning looked somewhat average on the offensive side of the ball this week, but the defense and special teams stepped up and prevented Indy from its first loss against the 49ers with an 18-14 victory.

Minus the 60-yard touchdown run by Frank Gore, the defense was spectacular, with two very crucial sacks of 49ers QB Alex Smith in the closing minutes of the game. On top of that, they are now the NFL’s #1 rated defense in points allowed, which in the end, is the only stat on defense that truly matters.

Not unlike the Saints, the Colts are proving that they can win in several different ways, even if it is a halfback option pass to win the game.

[Editor's Note: Blah, blah, blah. The Colts' run ends once they face New England. Mark it down.]

3. Minnesota Vikings (Last 5 [+2])

Brett Favre must be feeling good. Yes, he beat his old team on MNF in Minnesota, but this one meant more. This one was in Lambeau.

Favre came out on fire, throwing for four touchdowns and no interceptions. Jared Allen is definitely a beast at DE; on one play, Green Bay didn’t even bother to block him en route to one of Minny’s six sacks on Aaron Rodgers.

[Editor's Note: Wait a minute...who the hell just said they don't know who Carlton Banks is and that they don't understand the Tom Jones reference? Are you serious? Damn this new generation is deprived. Just watch below and it will all make sense, and then find out what channel in your area shows reruns of The Fresh Price of Bel-Air. You'll thank me.]

4. New England Patriots (Last 4 [0])

The Pats were on bye this week, but with the Jets’ losing effort against Miami, they have improved their standing in the AFC East. As much as I hate to admit it, this team is dangerous. If they can stay healthy, they will be a major contender come time for the playoffs.

[Editor's Note: Way to be objective and give everyone equal time Myles. You write a book about the Colts and Saints, then we get to the Patriots and get three totally uninspired, generic sentences. I can't wait until they beat Indy and you have to rank them above the Colts. It's coming...soon.]

5. Denver Broncos (Last 3 [-2])

Finally, a chink in the armor of what was seeming to become an AFC Beast.

Denver lost to the Ravens 30-7, and now, all of those nay-sayers can say “I told you so.”

However, I am not jumping off the bandwagon. This team is still 6-1, plays in a soft division, and will be a pest in the playoffs, perhaps still even achieving a first round bye if they can bounce back from this loss.

Don’t sell Denver yet, it’s just one game.

6. Cincinnati Bengals (Last 6 [0)

Cincy was on bye this week, and apparently, that is the only way anyone can keep Chad Ochocinco out of the endzone.

Cincy remains tied atop the AFC North with the Steelers, and have a very important divisional matchup this week against Baltimore, who is coming off of a big win against denver.

7. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last 7 [0])

Pittsburgh was on bye this week, and remains tied for the lead in the AFC North with the aforementioned Bengals; however, consider them a half game behind Cincy because of a loss to the Bengals earlier in the season.

Pittsburgh is traveling to Denver for a monumental matchup on MNF this week. Denver is coming off of an embarrassing loss to the Ravens and will be looking for revenge on Big Ben and the Steelers.

[Editor's Note: Thinking about Denver, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh -- three solid teams, yes, but none of whom will be making the Super Bowl this year -- has me bored. So how 'bout a little more Carlton Banks?

Ask and you shall receive...]

8. Philadelphia Eagles (Last 13 [+5])

Don’t look now, but here come Donovan McNabb and the Eagles.

McNabb has potentially the biggest surprise of the NFL season in big play specialist DeSean Jackson, a guy that he can throw and hand off to, and he has done just that. Jackson still maintains the impressive stat that all of his touchdowns are of 50 yards or more.

The Eagles are tied for the NFC East lead with Dallas, and will host the ‘Boys in Philly this week with the division lead on the line.

9. Dallas Cowboys (Last 14 [+5])

I’m still not buying the Cowboys, despite their jump in my Power Rankings this week, which was probably due more to the poor play of the teams they moved past than their dominant victory over an injury-ravaged Seattle team.

Next week will be a big match in Philly against the Eagles for the division lead.

Keep this in mind as you jump on the Cowboys bandwagon, and eventually crown them prematurely: Wade Phillips is still their coach, and Tony Romo is still their quarterback; and unfortunately, December is coming.

10. Houston Texans (Last 15 [+5])

Well, apparently the Texans coaching staff has no love lost for fumbles. Running back Steve Slayton was benched in favor of back-up Ryan Moats who ended up with over 120 yards and three touchdowns.

Houston continues to play very well, and I hate to say it, but I told you so. Houston is 5-3 and will head to division leading, undefeated Indianapolis, for what may be the Texans’ biggest game of the season so far.

[Editor's note: For what "may be" their biggest game of the season? It's clearly their biggest game of the season, and very well might be the biggest game thus far in their franchise's history. Too bad them they won't have Owen Daniels for the rest of the season. Big loss, akin to Indy losing Dallas Clark.]

11. Atlanta Falcons (Last 11 [0])

The Falcons put up a fight against the Saints, but in the end it just wasn’t enough as they drop to three games back of the NFC South lead. Mike Smith and the Falcons still have a great team, and they could still make a push into the playoffs. Stay tuned, and don’t sell this team just yet.

[Editor's note: A "great" team? If that's true, then how do you have them below the Cowboys, who you claim to not be "buying". Come on Colts boy. Where's the consistency???]

12. New York Giants (Last 8 [-4])

Only just a few short weeks after they were tied with the Colts for #1 in my Power Rankings, I am screaming to sell the Giants.

Something is wrong in New York, very wrong.

Eli has regressed in production and decision making, and looks as confused as St. Louis did when they realized they had won last weekend against Detroit.

Better step up Giants, or you may find yourself out of the Power Rankings next week, and worse, out of the playoff race.

[Editor's Note: I'll agree with you there. As great and prestigious as your Power Rankings are, I do believe it would be far worse for the Giants to fall out of the playoff race than the rankings. But they will, of course, go hand in hand.]

13. Green Bay Packers (Last 9 [-4])

Green Bay gave a valiant effort in the closing minutes against Brett Favre and the Vikings in Favre’s triumphant return to Lambeau. The biggest concern in Cheeseland is protecting Aaron Rodgers. You just can’t allow six sacks a game and expect to win.

[Editor's Note: You also can't allow the best player in your franchise history, and one of the top 10-15 QBs in the NFL, to get away and play against you, in your division. But that's a topic for another day...]

14. Baltimore Ravens (Last Not Ranked)

Baltimore makes their way back into this week’s top 15 with a convincing win against the previously undefeated Broncos.

The Ravens’ defense held the Broncos to just seve points, and forced QB Kyle Orton out of his comfort zone, making him to throw the ball downfield.

The Ravens are fighting an uphill battle though, with the Steelers and Bengals playing great football.

15. Chicago Bears (Last Not Ranked)

The Bears make it back in to the top 15 this week with a convincing win over Cleveland.

Yes, It’s Cleveland, but still, with Arizona’s loss to the Panthers, I couldn’t fathom leaving them in the Rankings when they were barely there before.

The question on a weekly basis in Chicago is, which Jay Cutler will show up this week?

[Editor's note: You must not have watched the Bears-Browns game. It was the least impressive 30-6 win I've ever seen. Chicago did not look good at all; Cleveland is just that bad. You are right that the Bears need Cutler to step it up, but he looks really out of sync right now.]

This Week’s Biggest Winner

Philadelphia Eagles +5, Dallas Cowboys +5, Houston Texans +5

This Week’s Biggest Loser

Arizona Cardinals (Out of the Top 15), New York Giants -4

I do think the Saints will win, and I’m sure they’ll put up a ton of points, but I think the Falcons can keep this one closer than the 10 points they are being given. Falcons-Saints free pick: Falcons +10

Falcons-Saints MNF Preview and Analysis

In their first intra-divisional game of 2009, the New Orleans Saints, the NFC’s lone unbeaten team, look to start 7-0 for just the second time in team history (1991). It comes on the heels of their most difficult win, last weekend in Miami.

Everyone knows about Drew Brees and his 107 QB rating, but New Orleans also offers the third best rushing attack in the NFL, led by a balance of a dedicated Mike Bell, Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. Atlanta is clearly the Saints’ primary competition in the NFC South, and at two games back, needs this win to stay in the divisional title picture. Most “power rankings,” however, even in their own paper, don’t put the Falcons in the class of New Orleans.

Atlanta, though 19th in the NFL in total offense, should be in the top ten considering their talent. Michael Turner has regressed, and due to injuries, Atlanta signed veteran running back Aaron Stecker. Dallas got to Matt Ryan four times and he looked uncomfortable, even though, overall, Atlanta’s offense was fairly solid.

The Saints have 14 sacks in six games, so one would think that they’d have the same ability to harass Ryan, but defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis injured his knee at Miami and will probably miss this game. Ellis’ absence will be felt, as people underestimate how important he is to New Orleans’ defense, especially commanding double teams. Not having him in the lineup will make the line significantly weaker, and Ryan should have more success throwing the ball. In two meetings last year, Ryan totaled 59 points against the Saints.

Defensively for the Falcons, they’ve played well against the rush lately, but Drew Brees definitely has the potential to torch their secondary with receivers Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Jeremy Shockey and Devery Henderson, plus their aforementioned trio of runners out of backfield.

For example, Tony Romo really struggled going into the Atlanta game, but quickly broke out of his funk with 311 yards and three touchdowns versus the Falcons’ secondary. Atlanta had been playing much better defense this year, but starting corner Brian Williams suffered a season-ending injury against the Bears, forcing the smaller Brent Grimes into the lineup. Atlanta could not contain Miles Austin last week either, and statistically they are 25th in total defense, one spot down from last season.

The Falcons have been playing well against the rush lately, but worrying about Thomas, Bell and Bush coming out of the backfield could distract from the pass, and allow Brees to pick apart the secondary.

Vegas had the undefeated Saints installed as 11 point favorites over the inconsistent 4-2 Falcons as they prepare to meet Monday night in an NFC South showdown at the Louisiana Superdome. That seems high, and perhaps it’s indicative of what fans — even their own — really feel about Atlanta after their Week 7 loss to the mediocre Cowboys; but at the same time, this game should be competitive.

These squads are know each other well, so I think it remains close throughout. Unless Brees goes wild, which he might, I’d take the points, especially if you can get even more than 11.

MSF's Week 8 NFL Power Rankings have been released, and there has been shuffling at the top between the Colts and Saints, with the undefeated Broncos holding steady at #3.

With a another very interesting week of NFL Football in the books, the Power Rankings have decided to be like Elvis for Halloween this week….they’re “All Shook Up”.

O.K., that was terrible, but on a more serious note, it was a very interesting week with a lot of changes in the rankings. Take a look and comment; tell me what YOU think!

[Editor's note: I'll tell you what I think right now. How in the hell can you drop the Saints below the Colts after NO showed the heart of a champion on the road this past Sunday? Oh wait, that's right...I forgot that you live in Indianapolis. Never mind. Makes perfect sense. "All shook up" indeed...]

1. Indianapolis Colts (Last 2 [+1])

O.K., so we all expected the Colts to wax the Rams. No big surprise at all.

But, this Colts defense has seemed to continue to pick up speed, and the young guys that this team has, especially in the secondary, are beginning to make veteran plays, like Lacey’s interception return for a touchdown, which is something that Colts fans haven’t seen very often recently

The only negative to this game was that Peyton Manning’s streak of 300+ yard games was stopped at five. He only had 248 yards of passing and 3 TDs. Only.

2. New Orleans Saints (Last 1 [-1])

At the half of their bout with Miami, I’m pretty sure everyone in the Bayou must have been drowning their sorrows in a nice dark beer.

After being down 24-3, the Saints took control of the game and ended up with a commanding 46-34 victory over the Dolphins.

Drew Brees said after the game that he never once lost confidence that the Saints would be victorious. Now those are some very strong words.

The Saints still drop a spot in my Power Rankings due to the fact that they did struggle in the first half against Miami, but don’t be surprised if they find their way back to the top. Next week is a big game against division rival Atlanta.

3. Denver Broncos (Last 3 [No Change])

With Denver on bye, and one of the four remaining undefeated teams falling from perfection (see Minnesota Vikings), I feel it’s only fair that Denver maintains their position in the Power Rankings this week.

Next up: the spiraling Baltimore Ravens

4. New England Patriots (Last 5 [+1])

So the Pats have beaten up on bad teams. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are a top 5 team right?

Wrong.

This team is picking up steam and now at 5-2 they are solely atop the AFC East.

Anyone else anticipating a knock down drag out fight in Indianapolis on November 15th? Mark it on your calendar.

5. Minnesota Vikings (Last 4 [-1])

So the Vikes are the first of the final four undefeated teams to fall from grace, but there is nothing for them to hang their head about. My only question for Brad Childress is why on 1st and goal on the half yard line would you only give the league’s best runner one shot?

Don’t blame Brett Favre for this loss. The fumble was blind, and his interception was more Chester Taylor’s fault than Favre’s. This is still a very dangerous team, but next week’s game in Green Bay – Favre’s first game in GB since his exit - just got a lot more interesting.

6. Cincinnati Bengals (Last 14 [+8])

This team keeps surprising me and impressing me the further we get along in the season. They’ve already beaten the Steelers and now have on their resume a complete dismantling of Jay Cutler and the Bears, 45-10.

Cedric Benson is playing like the Bears thought he would when they picked him 4th over all. The only problem? He’s a Bengal now.

We talk about the weapons in Indy and New Orleans, but what about the Bengals? Carson Palmer. Chad Ochocinco. Laverneus Coles. Chris Henry. Cedrick Benson.

Take your pick on who to stop. They’ll just burn you elsewhere.

A bye this week for the Bengals, then a big divisional game against the Ravens in week 9.

7. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last 9 [+2])

I haven’t figured out how much I buy into the Steelers this year, but every time I start to close the book on them, they come out and just do something really special.

Two defensive touchdowns in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter against Brett Favre and the undefeated Vikings sealed this game for the Steel City. Big Ben continues to be a very solid QB, and now the Steelers find themselves with their star back on D, and in a virtual tie with Cincy for the AFC North.

Get some rest boys, you’re heading to Denver after your bye.

8. New York Giants (Last 7 [-1])

This team is really starting to become a big disappointment.

A couple weeks ago, Jerod and I had a conversation about who the Giants had played, and aside from the Cowboys (and who the hell knows if they are for real or not), the G-Men had played no one. Now they have suffered consecutive losses against the Saints and Cardinals.

Eli looks a little lost out there and coach Tom Coughlin had better fix this team. Fast.

9. Green Bay Packers (Last 8 [-1])

What a big weekend for Aaron Rodgers and the Pack.

A huge 31-3 win over the mundane Browns (sorry Jerod) [Editor's note: go to hell Myles, the tailgating was awesome!], coupled with a Minnesota loss to the Steelers and the Pack are just one game back of the division leading Vikings.

Oh yeah. The evil Brett Favre and his aforementioned Vikes come to town this week, and the Pack have the chance to get revenge for their loss earlier in the season. It would also moveGreen Bay into a tie for the NFC North with Minnesota.

This is a much watch game. There will be blood.

10. Arizona Cardinals (Last 15 [+5])

After their loss to the Colts, I, as well as just about every NFL expert out there, had written the Cards off.

Then they spanked Seattle and beat the Giants.

Now Arizona sits at the top of the NFC West, and as long as they continue to play well they will most likely win their division with San Fran starting to fall apart.

11. Atlanta Falcons (Last 6 [-5])

I’m not sure what’s going on in the ATL right now, but I would love to know who the real Falcons are.

Two weeks ago they blew out the 49ers in San Fran, then they struggled to close the book on the Bears.

Now, after a 37-21 loss to America’s Team (The Cowboys) the Falcons find themselves at 4-2, two games behind the undefeated Saints.

12. New York Jets (Last 11 [-1])

Want to hear irony?

After a couple of really bad weeks for Mark Sanchez and the Jets, seemingly the biggest story of the Jet 38-0 trouncing of the Joke-land Raiders (you like that?) is Mark Sanchez sneaking a hot dog between his legs.

At least he likes mustard on his hot dog.

Other than that, the Jets disposed of a team they were supposed to beat. I’m still concerned about Sanchez’s “rookie-dom.” [Editor's note: Or, to continue to lame jokes, shouldn't it be "rookie-dumb?"]

13. Philadelphia Eagles (Last Not Ranked)

The Eagles continue to bounce in and out of my weekly top 15.

There is a superstar in the making in Philly.

DeSean Jackson does it all. Reverses for 60 yard touchdowns, catches for 60 yard touchdowns, kick returns.

Here’s an interesting stat: of Jackson’s four touchdowns this season, none have been for any less than 57 yards.

14. Dallas Cowboys (Last Not Ranked)

Contender or Pretender? I’m still trying to figure this one out.

Tony Romo is about as consistent as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. However, Miles Austin has given this offense new life. His big play ability give a new dimension to the otherwise dull Cowboy offense.

Maybe all Romo needed was a big play receiver NOT named Terrell Owens.

15. Houston Texans (Last Not Ranked)

I’m sure I’m going to catch hell again for putting the Texans back in my top 15, but it’s my top 15 and I’ll do what I want. Mess with me and I’ll put the Raiders up here.

[Editor's note: do that and you can find another website to post your Power Rankings on. If a shitty, undeserving team is going to inexplicably crack the top 15 it's going to be the Browns...or I'm taking your log-in password and going home.]

In all seriousness, the Texans are 4-3 and although they are somewhat inconsistent in their play, they keep winning ball games.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Matt Shaub may perhaps be the most underrated QB in the NFL right now. Remember the last QB that I considered to be underrated? His name was Drew Brees.

Any Questions?

This Week’s Biggest Winner

Cincinnati Bengals +8

This Week’s Biggest Loser

Jim Zorn and the entire Redskin Management Team. Need I say more?

Baltimore Ravens – This team has been falling apart at the seams, hopefully the bye week will treat them well.

Jerod had his first ever Muni Lot tailgating experience this past Sunday. While it's not really something that can accurately be described in words, it was fun enough to make even a 31-3 loss worth attending.

As you know, I spent this past weekend in Cleveland for the Sports Media 360 conference. In addition to a wonderful exchange of ideas on Saturday, the trip was highlighted by my first ever Browns tailgate and game.

Unfortunately, the game sucked…but the tailgating was predictably awesome, featuring an endless supply of decorative vehicles like the one you see pictured.

It also featured belligerent drunk guys getting arrested, men wearing jerseys and no pants, bald guys with their faces painted bright orange, a guy in a Browns-colored Spider-Man outfit, a far greater number of good looking women than I would have expected, and plenty of actual dogs.

It was also a hell of a lot of fun and all I needed to experience to know why so many Browns fans keep coming back on Sundays despite the putrid product on the field.

I had planned on putting together a photo slideshow with some of the pictures I took, but am running a bit behind on time with some other responsibilities pressing.

Luckily Sarah Spain, one of the featured guests of Sports Media 360, already put a great photo diary together of the weekend. I’ve embedded it below for you viewing pleasure.

And keep your eyes peeled on Cleveland Frowns, who helped plan the tailgate, and who spent half his day chasing down the best photos he could find. I’ve seen Frowns’ photo gallery work before and it’s always impeccable.

He will no doubt have a great photo gallery of the day up soon.

In the meantime, watch Sarah’s and enjoy…and definitely plan on spending at least one Sunday morning in the Muni Lot at some point in your life. It was awesome.

Last week, Georgia was supposed to walk into Knoxville, smack Tennessee right in the mouth, and walk out with a victory.

Apparently Lane Kiffin and the Vols didn’t get the memo.

The game looked like it would be a close finish, when Georgia trailed by five in the third quarter. But 21 unanswered points later, the Vols were celebrating a 45-19 victory.

This matchup was a complete role reversal. Georgia was supposed to be a legitamite SEC power and Tennessee was supposed to be a rebuilding team. The Vols completely shut down Georgia’s offense and the Bulldogs defense made Jonathan Crompton look like Peyton Manning. The Eric Berry-led Tennessee defense held Georgia to zero offensive touchdowns and never let the Bulldogs reach the red-zone.

But was this blowout just a fluke? Simply put, no. As much as fans were ready to give up on the Vols, this team still has life. There is no doubt the Volunteers have a championship level defense and the best defensive player in the country. Many fans and experts say that Tennessee can’t win with Crompton at quarterback. (I have even said this.) Though Crompton is likely one of the worst quarterbacks in the conference, he showed against Georgia that he is capable of stepping up in a big game.

In Tennessee’s three losses they were beaten by a combined total of only 18. The Vols had a chance in each of those games and are only a few plays from having a winning record. This Tennessee squad still needs work before they will be a contender for an SEC title. But right now they are capable of being competitive with anyone in the SEC.

Many Vols fans were ready to give up on the team and their new coach. But the win against Georgia has revived the fans in Knoxville and taken some pressure off of Kiffin. And for at least one week, Jonathan Crompton won’t have to worry about death threats from his own fans.

Tennessee gets a bye this Saturday and the timing couldn’t be better. The Vols have an extra week to prepare for #2 Alabama. This will give Kiffin the time to develop a gameplan and to make sure his players are ready for this big away game.

Big MB take a jaunt into the sports rumor mill in his latest version of I'll Tell You This. Could Tony Dungy end up back in Tampa Bay? Could Jon Gruden still end up in South Bend? And what about Brady Quinn and T.O.?

In this week’s “I’ll Tell You This” I jump into the realm of the Sports Rumor Mill. Take a look and brew up some comments or rumors of your own!

1. Tony Dungy to Return to Coaching?

Recent rumors have placed Tony Dungy back at the helm of the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers as early as next season. Tampa Bay is 0-5, and has shown no signs of life this season, and its coach, Raheem Morris, is no doubt on the hot seat.

There seemingly will be a change in Tampa in the next couple of years, if not before.

I’ll Tell You This:

I love Tony Dungy, and while I hated to see him leave Indianapolis, I felt that it was the best thing for him and his family.

I have been very impressed with Dungy’s studio reporting, and he and Rodney Harrison make a great duo on NBC’s Football in America.

However, I have mixed emotions on his return, especially this soon.

That being said, I believe that if he is to come back to football, Tampa Bay is the place for him to go. It will be tough for him to build a team, but what a great way for him to prove that Tampa should have never let him go.

2. Other Coaching Rumors in the NFL

Several teams will be looking to replace their head coaches this year after very dismal seasons.

It is most likely safe to say that Jeff Fisher’s job in Tennessee is safe for at least one more season.

However John Fox (Carolina), Wade Phillips (Dallas), Norv Turner (San Diego), Tom Cable (Raiders), as well as a few others may not be so fortunate.

I’ll Tell You This:

I am going to make some bold predictions for this offseason.

Bill Cowher, the chin himself, will return to football at the helm of Carolina. His grit-and-spit coaching style is perfect for the struggling Panthers.

Mike Shannahan will end up replacing Wade Phillips in Dallas. What better coach to handle someone like Jerry Jones on a regular basis. There is talent in Dallas (although Romo is terrible in my opinion), and Shannahan will expose that talent.

My boldest prediction is that Norv Turner will be fired from the Chargers and replaced next season by former Seahawks and Packers coach Mike Holmgren. Holmgren has said on TV that he loves the style of football that the Chargers play, and there is no doubt that he would be a great fit in San Diego.

As for Oakland, I understand that there will be a reality show on MTV called “Who Wants to Punch an Assistant”. They are accepting applications right now. Previous work experience only requires a pulse, and knowing the difference between a football and a hamburger.

As long as Al Davis is in the picture this team is doomed to failure.

3. Gruden. Chuckie. NCAA.

Three words that a lot of NFL fans would have never put in a sentence together may now become a reality.

The main rumor circulating is that Charlie Weis’ job does not rest on the success of his Fighting Irish, but on the decision of John Gruden to come to Notre Dame.

However, even more rumors have recently surfaced placing Gruden in Louisville.

I’ll Tell You This:

As a fan of Golden Domers myself, the very thought of Gruden coming to Notre Dame excites me beyond belief.

Although Louisville would be a good fit for Gruden, he has said that it has always been his dream to coach the Fighting Irish.

Gruden would also be great at handling the pressure that comes with the job in South Bend, Indiana, much better than Charlie Weis has thus far.

4. NFL Trade Rumors

With the NFL Trade Deadline fast approaching this coming Tuesday, there are Trade rumors on the wire that may or may not be valid, I will revue what I find as the most interesting two.

Only five weeks after being named the starting QB of the Browns by Eric Mangini, Brady Quinn is now on the trading block.

While Quinn laughs off the rumors, possible destinations have included Oakland, Tampa Bay, and St. Louis.

The other major trade rumor floating around is Terrel Owens and the Bills. The biggest rumor floating is that he may be headed to Chicago to play with Jay Cutler and the Bears.

I’ll Tell You This:

Quinn is not the answer for any of these terrible teams. He has been a let down, and as it hurts me to say since he is a Irish Alum, he is quickly falling into the Ryan Leaf bust category.

Obviously, Buffalo and their terrible 1-4 record is looking into their crystal ball, and seeing that a T.O. blow up is inevitable at this time. Chicago would be a great fit as it would give Cutler the chance to throw the deep ball.

That being said, T.O. is a gamble anywhere he goes, and will likely destroy any locker room that is not completely controlled. Owens needs Parcells….perhaps a trade to Miami?

5. You Tell Me This:

In this week’s edition of “You Tell Me This” I want to hear from you guys about any rumors in any sports that you may know of, and perhaps if there are any spins on the rumors I have posted!

That’s all for this week kids!

Another interesting week of NFL football and it's time to see how the top 15 teams in the NFL stack up. It should come as no surprise that last week's top two stayed in the same spots this weekend.

Another interesting week of NFL football and it’s time to see how the top 15 teams in the NFL stack up.

It should come as no surprise that last week’s top two stayed in the same spots this weekend.

(Hint: both teams have Archie Manning’s sons calling the signals!)

After the jump, check out my current top 15 and then chime in with your comments/disagreements in the comment section.

T-1. New York Giants (Last 1 [No Change])

Yet another blow-out win for the Giants, this time against a California Highschool team, the Oakland Raiders. Eli Manning is looking like he may challenge his older brother for MVP, and Ahmad Bradshaw had a coming out party with nearly 100 yards and 2 TDs. This WR corps looks pretty fast, and they all make great catches. Big matchup heading to New Orleans next week.

T-1. Indianapolis Colts (Last 1 [No Change])

Normally I would focus on how awesome Peyton Manning has been playing, and after his fifth straight 300+ yard game, Manning looks like he may just get that record-setting 4th MVP.

But I want to talk about the defense. For a defense that supposedly can’t stop the run and was missing four starters at that, they held Chris Johnson, the league’s current leader in rushing yards, to only 34 yards, while holding the entire Tennessee offense to only 9 points.

Austin Collie had a huge outing as yet another target for Manning, and one must ask themselves as the Colts move into the bye, what will happen when Gonzalez returns to the lineup?

3. New Orleans Saints (Last 3 [No Change])

Not much to report after a bye week, but there is a HUGE match-up and possible NFC championship game preview coming to town as Eli Manning comes into New Orleans. Drew Brees is the third cog in what seems to be a three-way race for MVP, and there is no doubt that the winner of this week’s game will find themselves in sole possession of first place in my power rankings with the Colts on bye.

4. Minnesota Vikings (Last 4 [No Change])

Somewhere John Madden is still endlessly repeating the words “Brett Favre”.

In his first game after turning 40, Favre once again proved he has still got it as he improved his team to 5-0.

The defense is forcing turnovers, the offense is scoring, and this team is clicking on all cylinders.

5. Denver Broncos (Last 5 [No Change])

Last week I got a lot of hell for putting Denver at #5. Well maybe now you guys will listen to me. After Denver’s fourth quarter drive to tie the game, Denver kicked a field goal in overtime to beat New England and propel themselves to 5-0.

Brandon Marshall has really started to open up his game and show the NFL what he is truly capable of producing. Denver is the real deal, get over it.

By the way, Denver, please…..PLEASE….don’t EVER wear those jerseys again.

6. Atlanta Falcons (Last 9 [+3])

Atlanta came off of their bye week and completely THROTTLED NFC hopeful San Fransico with a 45-10 victory.

Matt Ryan continues to impress, and for the first time this season, Michael Turner has finally started to produce for this team. Atlanta may just give the Saints a run for their money in the NFC South.

7. Cincinnati Bengals (Last 10 [+3])

Who would have believed that five weeks into the season, the Bengals would have a one game lead on both Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the AFC North? Or that Cincy would drive late in the 4th quarter and score a touchdown to shock the Baltimore Ravens with a 17-15 victory?

Carson Palmer is healthy, and that is scary.

8. Philadelphia Eagles (Last Not Ranked)

Donovan McNabb is back. Boy is he ever back.

McNabb was 16/21 for 264 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday in a 33-14 dismantling of Tampa Bay.

If any one was questioning whether or not there would be a QB controversy in Philly, McNabb definitely answered your question this weekend with a resounding “NO!”

9. New York Jets (Last 11 [-2])

Although the loss to Miami was disappointing, it was a great game, and more specifically, a great 4th quarter.

The good news for New York is that Sanchez had a great game after his debacle against the Saints.

Even more good news?

Braylon Edwards was amazing. He had at least two amazing catches to go along with his 5 catches for 64 yards and one touchdown.

I say this again Jets fans. Keep hope alive you are still tied for the lead in the AFC East.

10. New England Patriots (Last 6 [-4])

New England was shocked this past weekend by the Denver Broncos in a 17-14 overtime loss, after a Matt Prater kick.

Randy Moss has become a non-issue as Moss’ biggest reception of the day was an interception in the closing minutes of the first half. If NE wants to get back to where they were, they must once again establish the run with Morris and Maroney, but most of all they must establish the deep threat once again of Randy Moss.

11. Baltimore Ravens (Last 7 [-4])

Two big losses in a row drop the Ravens from first in my Power Rankings to not even in the top ten.

After a loss to the “Bungles” (The Cincinnati Bengals), the Ravens now drop to 3-2 in a two-way tie for second place in the AFC North.

Not sure what is going on with these guys, but they need to figure it out before they find themselves watching the playoffs from home.

The Ravens must re-establish their run game and get this defense back up to the level they are used to play on.

12. San Francisco 49ers (Last 8 [-4])

Finally, a gut check for the NFC’s Cinderella team. San Francisco was dominated at home by Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.

ATL routed the upstart 49ers 45-10 in San Fransisco.

Although this is a tough loss San Fran still has a great team. Gore will be returning soon, and let us not forget, they are in a weak division with Seattle, Arizona, and St. Louis.

13. Chicago Bears (Last 12 [-1])

The Bears are on bye this week, but Minnesota won again improving their mark to 5-0. The Bears must stay on their game if they want to remain in contention for the NFC Playoffs.

14. Green Bay Packers (Last 15 [+1])

Much the same as Chicago, the Packers spent the weekend at home watching the games on NFL Sunday Ticket. Minnesota is 5-0 now, Better step it up!

15. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last 14 [-1])

I think the Steelers are here again this week, mainly by default. How do you almost throw away a game vs. Detroit???

There are some definite holes in Pittsburgh’s game, and I can only assume they are looking forward with baited breath for the return of their leader, Troy Polamalu.

This Week’s Biggest Winner

Philadelphia Eagles

This Week’s Biggest Loser

New England Patriots/Baltimore Ravens/San Fransisco 49ers

Big MB checks in with his Week 5 NFL Power Rankings. A quick glance at the weekly rankings reveals something that no one who has read Big MB's columns should be surprised by: the Colts are located right at the top.

This week, we have our first ever tie in the Power Rankings. I had a real tough decision choosing who would be first and who would be second so there is a tie for first place.

T-1. New York Giants (Last 6 [+5])

Ok, so Archie Manning must be sitting at home smiling at both of his boys who will tie for 1st in Big MB’s Power Rankings for Week 5.

Obviously, the Giants don’t miss Plaxico Burress one bit. The G-men’s destruction of Kansas City only showcased Manning and his receivers. Smith and Manningham continue to impress and Brandon Jacobs is the beast of the NFC East. Next week is a HUGE NFC power game as the Saints come to town.

[Editor's Note: it's Big MB writing this column...any guess who the other 4-0 team is that he has tied for first? It shouldn't take more than one...]

T-1. Indianapolis Colts (Last 3 [+2])

Can Peyton get any better?

Manning has had 4 straight games of 300+ yards for the first time in his career. Joseph Addai and Donald Brown are starting to look like an unstoppable backfield tandem, both rushing for a touchdown a piece in Indy’s dismantling of Seattle. And worst of all for other teams in the NFL, this defense under Larry Coyer is looking like somewhat of an immovable object.

Until the slop minutes of the matchup with Seattle when Indy had their 3rd string in, the Colts held Seattle to only 3 points, after holding an explosive Arizona offense to only 10. Next Week presents an interesting match up against 0-4 Tennessee.

3. New Orleans Saints (Last 2 [-1])

For the second straight week, Drew Brees didn’t throw one touchdown, but the Saints continue to roll as they took down the heavily favored Jets of New York. The defense had two touchdowns, and Pierre Thomas put one in on the ground. This team seams to be able to win games just about any way they want. Next week is a huge match up as they travel to New York to battle it out with the also undefeated Giants.

4. Minnesota Vikings (Last 5 [+1])

Brett Favre came out in a fury and never looked back in this game. The Vikings defense looked as good as ever putting Aaron Rodgers on his back very often, and more importantly have established that teams can no longer put 8 or 9 in the box against Peterson. Favre is really clicking with this team now, which is very scary for all of those in the NFC North.

5. Denver Broncos (Last 10 [+5])

O.K., I can admit when I am wrong. I was dead wrong. This Denver team may be more of a contender than I had previously thought. Although they looked stale early at home against Dallas, a late touchdown catch by Brandon Marshall, highlighted by a great run after the catch and horrible tackling by Dallas, then a redzone stand by the defense and Denver is now 4-0. Interesting.

6. New England Patriots (Last 12 [+6])

Don’t look now, but here come the Patriots. Another scary moment for Pat fans when Brady went to the locker room, but he came back to lead his team to a victory against a very tough Baltimore team. As much as I hate giving the Pats credit, they are playing better, and now have beaten two very tough teams, and are in a two-way tie in the AFC East with the Jets.

7. Baltimore Ravens (Last 1 [-6])

After a disappointing loss to New England, Baltimore takes a significant drop in my Power Rankings, but not necessarily because of their play, but more because of the play of the teams that moved ahead of them. Baltimore is still one of the best teams in the league, but now find themselves in a two-way tie for the lead in the AFC North with surprise Cinderella Cincinnati.

8. San Fransico 49ers (Last 13 [+5])

Along with Cincy, the 49ers seem to be putting together a Cinderella season after their 35-0 dismantling of St. Louis, who seems to be just awful. No Frank Gore? No problem. Shaun Hill seems to be making a name for himself as a legitimate QB in this league. Now, if only they could get this whole Crabtree thing under wraps, this team could possible be very dangerous.

9. Atlanta Falcons (Last 7 [-2])

Not much to report here, Atlanta was on a bye week after a tough loss to New England, so they take a little hit on their rankings, just due to inactivity, but at least they didn’t completely fall off like the Eagles.

10. Cincinnati Bengals (Last 11 [+1])

The Bengals still remain somewhat of an NFL Cinderella, now 3-1 and tied with the Ravens for first in the AFC North, perhaps football’s most brutal division. They did struggle against a weak Browns team, but a win is a win. Chad Ochocinco and Carson Palmer seem to have put aside their differences, Ochocinco had 2 TD’s in this game.

11. New York Jets (Last 4 [-7])

Remember last week when I told you that I was hesitant to put the Jets very high in my rankings, due to the fact that they were led by a rookie QB? Well, Sunday’s loss to the nothing-less-than-impressive Saints proved that Sanchez may not quite be ready to be the NFL MVP. Yes, he is an impressive rookie QB, but he will make mistakes, just as he did this week. Don’t sell your stock of this team just yet though, they are definitely still a contender.

12. Chicago Bears (Last 8 [-4])

It looked a little scary for the Bears early against the hungry Lions (cheesy I know), but the second half proved to be all Chicago as Jay Cutler and Company put it to Detroit and came away victorious to establish a 3-1 record. Matt Forte seems to be waking up as well, and this defense is playing quite well without its emotional and physical leader, Brian Unlacher.

13. Houston Texans (Last Not Ranked)

Those who know me know that I am very high on the Houston Texans this year. I predicted them to make the playoffs, and even possibly challenge the vaunted Colts for the AFC South Title. I’m not quite sure they will challenge the Colts with the way that Indy is playing, but Matt Schaub is a very, very good QB, and it doesn’t hurt to be throwing passes to a beast like Andre Johnson. Oh yeah, Steve Slaton decided to show up to the party too.

Keep your eyes on the Texans, it just may be their time to shine.

14. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last 15 [+1])

The Steelers got off to a great start against the Chargers, but somehow almost tried to give the game away in the 4th quarter. They did hold on to win 38-28, but there may be concern in how they let the Chargers back in this one. The one positive the Steel City fans can take from this is Rashard Mendenhall. Pittsburgh finally found a run game with Mendenhall having over 160 yards and 2 TD’s.

15. Green Bay Packers (Last 9 [-6])

This week, the Pack made the top 15 because there really weren’t too many other choices I liked better. Minnesota exposed this poor offensive line again. If Green Bay wants to have a franchise quarterback, they had better work to protect him better. The Pack has a lot of work to do, and they will be climbing an uphill battle with Minnesota and Chicago looking so good in this division.

This Week’s Biggest Winner

New England Patriots (+6) – Just when you thought they were done….don’t look now here comes the Pats.

Wow.

Trailing 24-20 in the 4th quarter to the San Francisco 49ers, Brett Favre showed everyone why the Vikings were willing to bend over backwards to bring him in as their QB for 2009.

Here’s why:

Video: Brett Favre Throws Game-Winning Touchdown Pass to Greg Lewis

Favre, under intense pressure, found Greg Lewis in the back of the endzone for the touchdown, giving the Vikings a 27-24 lead with :02 left. Lost in the hubbub over Favre throwing the TD will be the incredible effort by Lewis to make the grab. He did a fantastic job on the play.

The Vikings would hang on and move to 3-0. The frisky 49ers fell to 2-1…but also showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.

Favre finished the game 24-46 for 301 yards. He threw 2 TDs and one INT, his first pick of the season.

Next week, Favre and the Vikings face Favre’s old team, the Green Bay Packers, on Monday night.

Brace yourself. You won’t hear about anything else next week.

Luckily I don’t, so I can still offer up at least a guess as to how it will turn out. I think it all comes down to who you trust more: Tony Romo or Jake Delhomme. If Romo protects the ball and lets his great RBs do the heavy lifting, the Cowboys should rebound from their home opener for a win. However, Dallas is terrible against the pass (as proven last week by Eli Manning) and perhaps this is the game that Jake Delhomme gets well again. In the end, I do think Dallas will win this game, but Romo will make enough mistakes and Dallas’ DBs will play poorly enough for Carolina to keep it close. Plus, when in doubt, go with the 0-2 team that had playoff expectations coming into the year. Desperation can be huge in the NFL. Panthers-Cowboys free spread pick: Panthers +9.5

Cowboys-Panthers Preview & Analysis

Though it may seem silly and emotional, in Dallas, hope turned to despair from week one to two.

However, after a closer look, it is a very good sign for your offense when you are playing one of the top rated defenses in the conference, your quarterback plays one of the worst games of his career, and you still manage 31 points.

These results convey two important points: (1) that your offense is balanced, and (2) that your offensive line is getting the job done.

It should come as no surprise that given the production of said offensive line, the Cowboys running game is firing on all cylinders as Marion Barber and Felix Jones represent arguably the best 1-2 running back punch in the NFC, if not the NFL. Barber is averaging more than six yards per carry in 2009. Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, Barber is still questionable for Monday with a quad injury.

Fortunately for ‘Boys fans though, his backup, Tashard Choice, is no slouch, and should pick up the slack nicely if pressed into a more prominent role in the offense. Last year, Choice put together a string of three excellent games against Pittsburgh, New York, and Baltimore. Therefore, he should serve solidly in a time-share with Jones.

Expect Mr. Jones to maintain his role as the change of pace and 3rd down back with Choice claiming the “workhorse” duties. The duo should come up big against a Panthers defense that has an injury riddled front-line and has given up over 150 rushing yards in each of their first two games.

As for Romo, odds are he’ll be fine. The bigger issue is the uncertainty over a reliable third option for the Cowboys’ receiving game (after Jason Witten and Roy Williams). Patrick Crayton seems destined to be nothing more that a slot receiver, leaving Miles Austin in the driver’s seat to run away with second wideout duties. His talent and big play ability has left Jerry Jones watering at the mouth, but Austin has yet to consistently manifest that talent into reality.

It is a very bad sign for your secondary when Eli Manning, Mario Manningham, and Steve Smith look like the second coming of the Three Amigos. That said, I think the Cowboys will be fine defensively, so long as they abandon the experiment to rotate Orlando Scandrick (who was repeatedly burned by Manningham) and Mike Jenkins at the corner, and it seems like Wade Phillips has already started to move in that direction.

Panthers fans can take some solace in the fact that Jake Delhomme, coming off two straight awful performances that led to major criticism, wasn’t nearly as bad last week against Atlanta; but that being said, his 308 passing yards shed far too positive a light on his actual performance. This simply isn’t the Delhomme of five years ago, and the Panthers have to be second guessing the heck out of themselves for his exorbitant contract extension this past off-season.

Though he indicated he “felt good out there,” Jake was nearly an early disaster. Though he began the game 4-4 for 54 yards, he could have thrown an early interception when he inexplicably tossed a weak underhand pass, which was dropped by a Falcons defender. If Delhomme would have thrown a pick there, things probably would have snowballed on him again, as they would have been in another big early hole.

Cowboys-Panthers Prediction and Spread Pick

So, though it’s not outrageous to muse that the 34 year-old is on the downward arc of his career, the Panthers do indeed have a dangerous rushing attack with DeAngelo Williams and 22 year-old Jonathan Stewart that will make things significantly easier for Mr. Delhomme at times.

All that being said, I just don’t see how the Panthers stop the Cowboys’ rushing attack, especially with the season ending ankle injury to defensive tackle Louis Leonard, one of the team’s primary run stuffers. This is yet another hindrance to a defensive line already crippled by injuries.

Ultimately, I just don’t see the Panthers as being able to stop the Cowboys’ ground game without bringing a safety in the box, and in doing so, they will open up the passing attack for Tony Romo, who should have a good bounce back game. Dallas needs this win, and it’s highly likely they’ll get it, perhaps easily.

Cowboys-Panthers Prediction and Spread Pick: Cowboys do cover the large spread.

Update: The NFL Week 11 TV schedule, point spreads, and picks post is up.

——————–

Does it seem to anyone else like those first two weeks of the NFL season just flew by?

I suppose it always seems like that. Training camp and the preseason just drags on and on and before you know it — BAM! — your team is 0-2 and it feels like all hope is lost.

Yes, you guessed it, a Browns fan is writing this week’s NFL TV schedule, point spreads, and announcer pairings post.

And although Browns fans may not have a whole lot to watch this week, considering their team has to travel to Baltimore, Week 3 is a pivotal week for a host of fan bases who had high hopes coming into this season.

That is a huge reason why you should be very careful before you bet against the Titans (at the Jets) and the Panthers (at Dallas on Monday night). I realize that neither of these teams has a favorable matchup, but both squads made the playoffs last year, had high hopes coming into 2009, and have rosters filled with prideful veterans.

They may not win, but I’d bet they’ll cover.

As always, this post is designed to be the most complete viewing guide you’ll find anywhere. Not only is every game listed (with date, time, network, and announcer pairing) but we also give you the point spread and over-under, as well as an educated guess at a spread pick for each game.

Through two weeks I am 19-13 against the spread. Not too shabby.

A couple of quick things to keep in mind:

All times are ET.

Some games do not have all of the information filled in as of this post being published (i.e. a few games don’t have spreads yet and the announcer assignments have not yet been announced). I’ll up date this post as soon as the information is available at the506.com.

Point spread and over-under listings are as of Monday night, and obviously subject to change throughout the week. If you want update point spread info, or some expert advice as you make your weekly picks, below are a few helpful links.

And with all that said, here is your mood music and the Week 3 TV schedule, point spreads, announcers, and picks.

Kansas City Chiefs (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)

Chiefs-Eagles Date: Sunday, September 27th

Chiefs-Eagles Time: 1:00 ET

Chiefs-Eagles TV Network: CBS

Chiefs-Eagles Announcers: Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots

Chiefs-Eagles Point Spread: NL

Chiefs-Eagles Over-Under: NL

Chiefs-Eagles Pick: There is currently no line on this game, presumably while the powers that be await a decision on Philly’s QB and the status of Brian Westbrook. Well, I don’t care. Whatever it is (Philly will be favored) take the Eagles and the points. The Chiefs are awful. Chiefs-Eagles free spread pick: Eagles minus the points

New York Giants (2-0) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-2)

Giants-Buccaneers Date: Sunday, September 27th

Giants-Buccaneers Time: 1:00 ET

Giants-Buccaneers TV Network: FOX

Giants-Buccaneers Announcers: Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston, and Tony Siragusa

Giants-Buccaneers Point Spread: Giants -7.5

Giants-Buccaneers Over-Under: 44

Giants-Buccaneers Pick: I have been wholly unimpressed by the Bucs so far this year — their secondary is absolutely pitiful — whereas the Giants have played very sound football in moving to 2-0. I think Eli Manning will have another big game hooking up with Steve Smith and Mario Manningham and the Giants will roll, even on the road. Giants-Buccaneers free spread pick: Giants -7.5

Green Bay Packers (1-1) at St. Louis Rams (0-2)

Packers-Rams Date: Sunday, September 27th

Packers-Rams Time: 1:00 ET

Packers-Rams TV Network: FOX

Packers-Rams Announcers: Chris Myers and Trent Green

Packers-Rams Point Spread: Packers -6.5

Packers-Rams Over-Under: 41

Packers-Rams Pick: This one is tricky. Before last week, it would have been Packers and the points without thinking about it. But after seeing how poorly the Packers’ line played, along with their inability to stop Cedric Benson, I’m a little worried. The Rams played Washington tough last week and will be in desperation mode at 0-2 in front of their home fans. In the end though, I don’t think the Rams can score enough to keep up with the Packers. Packers-Rams free spread pick: Packers -6.5

San Francisco 49ers (2-0) at Minnesota Vikings (2-0)

49ers-Vikings Date: Sunday, September 27th

49ers-Vikings Time: 1:00 ET

49ers-Vikings TV Network: FOX

49ers-Vikings Announcers: Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan

49ers-Vikings Point Spread: Vikings -6.5

49ers-Vikings Over-Under: 40

49ers-Vikings Pick: The 49ers are getting no love. I realize Minnesota has dominated their first two games, but they played Cleveland and Detroit. They have not yet faced adversity, and it will be interesting to see Favre and his new teammates respond to a close game against a team that can stop the run. I don’t know if San Fran can pull out the W on the road, but I do think they run the ball and stop the run well enough to keep it close. 49ers-Vikings free spread pick: 49ers +6.5

Tennessee Titans (0-2) at New York Jets (2-0)

Titans-Jets Date: Sunday, September 27th

Titans-Jets Time: 1:00 ET

Titans-Jets TV Network: CBS

Titans-Jets Announcers: Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf

Titans-Jets Point Spread: Jets -2.5

Titans-Jets Over-Under: 37

Titans-Jets Pick: This is a tough spread. The Jets’ defense has been out of its mind through two weeks, while the Titans’ proud defense has shown that it misses Albert Haynesworth and Jim Schwartz. This Tennessee team is a proud bunch that went 3-13 last year and will be playing with their backs against the wall. The Jets, I think, are ripe for a letdown after putting so much emotionally into last week’s win over the Patriots. And despite all the hype about Mark Sanchez, he is still a rookie and will have a few clunkers here and there. I don’t know that the Titans will win, but they keep it close. Titans-Jets free spread pick: Titans +2.5

Atlanta Falcons (2-0) at New England Patriots (1-1)

Falcons-Patriots Date: Sunday, September 27th

Falcons-Patriots Time: 1:00 ET

Falcons-Patriots TV Network: FOX

Falcons-Patriots Announcers: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman

Falcons-Patriots Point Spread: Patriots -4.5

Falcons-Patriots Over-Under: 44

Falcons-Patriots Pick: The Patriots will be ready to go and focused after getting blasted by the Jets last week. The problem? Atlanta is really, really good. The Falcons can rush the passer, which attacks the Patriots biggest weakness on offense (protecting Tom Brady), and they can also run the ball. Oh yeah, and they have an emerging star in Matt Ryan who is having fun with his new toy, TE Tony Gonzalez. This will be a close one, and will come down to a mano-a-mano battle between Brady and Ryan. I think Brady ultimately wins it, but the Falcons cover. Falcons-Patriots free spread pick: Falcons +4.5

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) at Houston Texans (1-1)

Jaguars-Texans Date: Sunday, September 27th

Jaguars-Texans Time: 1:00 ET

Jaguars-Texans TV Network: CBS

Jaguars-Texans Announcers: Bill Macatee and Steve Beuerlein

Jaguars-Texans Point Spread: Texans -3.5

Jaguars-Texans Over-Under: 46.5

Jaguars-Texans Pick: This Jacksonville team is terrible, and they have shown signs of being able to do anything offensively other than garbage points. The Texans’ D has not played well, but its offense got clicking last week against Tennessee. I would not be surprised to see this game break the over, and I think Houston wins by at least a TD or more. Schaub, Johnson, and a rejuvenated Steve Slaton (he’s due!) will be too much for Jacksonville to handle. Jaguars-Texans free spread pick: Texans -3.5

Washington Redskins (1-1) at Detroit Lions (0-2)

Redskins-Lions Date: Sunday, September 27th

Redskins-Lions Time: 1:00 ET

Redskins-Lions TV Network: FOX

Redskins-Lions Announcers: Thom Brennaman and Brian Billick

Redskins-Lions Point Spread: Redskins -6.5

Redskins-Lions Over-Under: 38

Redskins-Lions Pick: Something tells me the Lions will be a trendy pick to get the upset W this week. And there is good reason for that: Washington is not a very good team right now. When you only beat St. Louis 9-7 at home, you have some issues. Detroit played well in the first half against Minnesota last week, but the Vikings are a really good team. I would take the under in this game, and my main hesitation in taking the Redskins and the point is that I don’t even know if they can get to 7 points. I do not think Detroit wins this game, but I do think they keep it close enough to give Jason Campbell and Jim Zorn some more sleepless nights next week. Redskins-Lions free spread pick: Lions +6.5

Cleveland Browns (0-2) at Baltimore Ravens (2-0)

Browns-Ravens Date: Sunday, September 27th

Browns-Ravens Time: 1:00 ET

Browns-Ravens TV Network: CBS

Browns-Ravens Announcers: GUS JOHNSON and Steve Tasker (Yes!!! A reason to watch the Browns! Gus Johnson!)

Browns-Ravens Point Spread: Ravens -13.5

Browns-Ravens Over-Under: 38.5

Browns-Ravens Pick: Ugh. I don’t even want to analyze this game this week. I would take Baltimore and the points if the spread was 21. Cleveland has shown no signs of life on offense, it wears out their D by the second half, and this Browns team always gets trounced at Baltimore when the Ravens are good. Well guess what? Baltimore is really good this year, and barring a huge surprise, they will take the Browns behind the proverbial woodshed. Browns-Ravens free spread pick: Ravens -13.5

Chicago Bears (1-1) at Seattle Seahawks (1-1)

Bears-Seahawks Date: Sunday, September 27th

Bears-Seahawks Time: 4:05 ET

Bears-Seahawks TV Network: Dick Stockton and Charles Davis

Bears-Seahawks Announcers: FOX

Bears-Seahawks Point Spread: Bears -2.5

Bears-Seahawks Over-Under: 37

Bears-Seahawks Pick: Poor Matt Hasselbeck. He just can’t seem to stay healthy anymore. If he were healthy and playing, I think they’d be a good bet to win and certainly to cover 2.5 points. However, I think last week’s win was a big confidence builder for Jay Cutler and the Bears. And after seeing what Frank Gore did to Seattle last week, Matt Forte will no doubt be ready for his 2009 breakout game. I think he gets it, and I think the Bears win by a TD. Bears-Seahawks free spread pick: Bears -2.5 (for the record, I’m already re-thinking this one…Seattle is tough to beat at home. But the absence of Hasselbeck seals it. Bears, minus the points, final answer.)

New Orleans Saints (2-0) at Buffalo Bills (1-1)

Saints-Bills Date: Sunday, September 27th

Saints-Bills Time: 4:05 ET

Saints-Bills TV Network: FOX

Saints-Bills Announcers: Ron Pitts and John Lynch

Saints-Bills Point Spread: Saints -5.5

Saints-Bills Over-Under: 52.5

Saints-Bills Pick: I love the Saints this year. Their offense has just been spectacular, and they have played surprisingly well defensively. The Bills did a good job of containing the Patriots for 3 1/2 quarters in week 1 and are playing better than I think most people expected. They certainly are running the ball better than expected, and that should help them keep this game close. I think the Saints’ O will continue to roll, but Buffalo should be able to control the ball somewhat and limit Drew Brees’ chances. I think the Saints win, but I also think the Bills have enough to keep this one close and cover. Saints-Bills free spread pick: Bills +5.5

Miami Dolphins (0-2) at San Diego Chargers (1-1)

Dolphins-Chargers Date: Sunday, September 27th

Dolphins-Chargers Time: 4:15 ET

Dolphins-Chargers TV Network: CBS

Dolphins-Chargers Announcers: Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts

Dolphins-Chargers Point Spread: Chargers -6.5

Dolphins-Chargers Over-Under: 43

Dolphins-Chargers Pick: The spread has not been posted yet as of publishing this on Monday night, but I’m taking the Dolphins. The ‘Fins played very well on Monday night in so many facets of the game, holding the Colts to under 15:00 time of possession. Peyton Manning is one of the few QBs who could win a game like that, and he did. San Diego is struggling against the run, especially with Jamal Williams now out for the season. I think Miami will be able to run the ball, keep it close, and perhaps even come out with the win. Either way, they’ll cover; and remember, desperate teams usually make good bets to cover. Dolphins-Chargers free spread pick: Dolphins + the points (6.5)

Denver Broncos (2-0) at Oakland Raiders (1-1)

Broncos-Raiders Date: Sunday, September 27th

Broncos-Raiders Time: 4:15 ET

Broncos-Raiders TV Network: CBS

Broncos-Raiders Announcers: Ian Eagle and Rich Gannon

Broncos-Raiders Point Spread: Raiders -1.5

Broncos-Raiders Over-Under: 35.5

Broncos-Raiders Pick: Ugh. This is going to be an ugly game. Amazingly, either Denver will be 3-0 or Oakland will be 2-1 after this game. Neither team will be as good as their record indicates, but someone has to win. Right now, I have very little faith in JaMarcus Russell. The Raiders somehow won on the road with Russell going 7-24 last week, but that will not happen again. I’m not at all sold on Denver, but I do think their offense is starting to click a bit. The Raiders’ D is much better this year, which will keep Oakland in the game, but Denver can really get after the passer and will force mistakes by Russell. I think this one stays under the number, but the damn Broncos move to 3-0. Broncos-Raiders free spread pick: Broncos +1.5

Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-1)

Steelers-Bengals Date: Sunday, September 27th

Steelers-Bengals Time: 4:15 ET

Steelers-Bengals TV Network: CBS

Steelers-Bengals Announcers: Jim Nantz and Phil Simms

Steelers-Bengals Point Spread: Steelers -4.5

Steelers-Bengals Over-Under: 37

Steelers-Bengals Pick: Cincinnati shocked a lot of people by going into Lambeau and beating the Packers last week. They did it by pressuring the QB and stopping the run. So far this year and last year, the Steelers have really struggled to both run and protect Ben Roethlisberger. However, I cannot in good faith recommend the Bengals as a winner in this game when their RB is my sworn fantasy enemy Cedric Benson. But since they are at home, and seemingly playing much better, I do think they can keep it close. Pittsburgh won’t blow many teams out, and I think they just squeak by with a win in Cincy. Steelers-Bengals free spread pick: Bengals +4.5

Indianapolis Colts (2-0) at Arizona Cardinals (1-1)

Colts-Cardinals Date: Sunday, September 27th

Colts-Cardinals Time: 8:20 ET

Colts-Cardinals TV Network: NBC

Colts-Cardinals Announcers: Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth

Colts-Cardinals Point Spread: Cardinals -2.5

Colts-Cardinals Over-Under: 48

Colts-Cardinals Pick: This has all the makings of a really tough spread choice. Both offenses are fantastic in the passing game but struggle running the ball. However, neither defense is particularly adept at stopping the run. The Colts absolutely stole Monday night’s game in Miami despite having the ball for less than 15 minutes. Arizona’s offense is too good to allow the Colts to do something similar here. The Cardinals won’t be able to run the ball as well as Miami did against Indianapolis, but I do think they have enough firepower to outscore the Colts and win by at least field goal. Colts-Cardinals free spread pick: Cardinals -2.5

Carolina Panthers (0-2) at Dallas Cowboys (1-1)

Panthers-Cowboys Date: Monday, September 28th

Panthers-Cowboys Time: 8:30 ET

Panthers-Cowboys TV Network: ESPN

Panthers-Cowboys Announcers: Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski, and Jon Gruden

Panthers-Cowboys Point Spread: Cowboys -9.5

Panthers-Cowboys Over-Under: 46

Panthers-Cowboys Pick: I don’t like this game at all and would not touch it with a ten-foot pole if I actually bet money on these things.

Jets-Patriots Preview

Jets head coach Rex Ryan has called all the season ticket holders, admitting he may not be up to Coach Belichick’s standards. He also admitted that he probably does not have a quarterback like Tom Brady nor three Super Bowl rings, but overall wants to win this game… badly!

Numerous Jets players have spoken out publically calling this their “Super Bowl,” as well as admitting they just want to pummel any New England Patriot player that comes in their vicinity.

Believe me, I have never seen this much hype since 2006 when Terrell Owens’ return to Philadelphia as Dallas Cowboy began to escalate that summer; but all this chaos over a week 2 match-up? Seriously?

I still consider this just a regular divisional game for both teams, not a championship.

Let’s be completely honest: Tom Brady looked sloppy and not in sync with any of his receivers this past Monday night. He did, however, pull off a heroic comeback that resembled the original Boston Patriots in their day.

With the absence of Jerod Mayo, and a defense that seems to lack leadership, who knows if we will be ready to watch another stellar performance from rookie Mark Sanchez. Sanchez seemed to stretch Joe Willie Namath’s smile from ear to ear last week as the Jets’ hero watched the young quarterback tally up 272 yards in the air and throw his first career NFL touchdown.

Any chances we could be looking at the next “Broadway Joe”?

Doubt it.

Jets-Patriots Prediction

Look for an explosive and pulverizing effort from this New York Jets defense, as they look to pressure and blitz Tom Brady constantly. As for the New England Patriots, the key to this game is stopping Bart Scott, Kris Jenkins, and the rest of this talented defense from applying the kind of pressure they want to apply.

Tom Brady needs to gain back more confidence in the pocket while at the same time sending a few deep passes to Randy Moss. By stretching the Jets defense through the air, as well as utilizing Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney, and Fred Taylor as the three-headed running attack, the Patriots should be able to thwart what looks to be a very strong New York Jets defense.

This game should end up being close, but not a win for the Jets once the final second ticks away.

Sorry Jets fans, this one belongs to the Patriots!

Prediction: Patriots 30 – Jets 20

Colts-Dolphins Analysis

Most Colts fans I know are usually optmistic, often blindly so. After last week’s 14-12 triumph over the subpar Jags in Indianapolis, however, many were not.

Even those over-analyzing and looking for pros and cons, down to the season as a whole, relayed guarded optimism at best, significant concerns about injuries and the running game at worst.

The Colts could not convert on short fourth downs, similar to last year’s playoffs when it directly cost them the game at San Diego. Despite the win last Sunday, Indy lost the turnover battle badly and did little on the ground. In addition to the injury to the team’s number two receiver, Anthony Gonzalez, oft-injured Bob Sanders (and his $7 million dollar contract) remains unavailable this week, out indefinitely it seems.

Therefore, I simply am not as sanguine as most others about the next few weeks of Colts football.

Though Indianapolis held on versus the Jags, it was far from spectacular. Overall, Peyton Manning was very good, with more than 300 yards in the air. Like in 2008 when he won his third MVP, he may have to carry this team on his shoulders if they are to achieve their 6th consecutive 12-win season. (And no, the team is not re-signing Marvin Harrison for obvious reasons not needing enumeration.)

The next step for the Colts is southward to Miami for a primetime special on Monday night.

Indianapolis can take solace in the fact that Miami’s “Wildcat” offense was listless in a 19-7 loss to Atlanta. Their focus is on shoring up the porous offensive line that will have to play better this week if they expect to have any chance of contending Monday night, much less throughout the season. The Dolphins lost three fumbles, threw an interception, and were nearly shutout. A late 4th-quarter touchdown made the game look closer than it actually was.

Miami had a plus-17 turnover differential last year. Was the Atlanta game an early sign that perhaps things won’t be the same in 2009?

Chad Pennington, who had just seven turnovers all of last year, had two last Sunday (an interception and a fumble). Though he was 21 for 29, Pennington threw for just 176 yards, which gives him a pretty weak average of just over six yards per attempt.

Returning to pass protection, the Falcons, not known for being able to get after the quarterback consistently, registered four sacks.

The Dolphins only used Pat White for three “Wildcat” plays during week one’s game, and on one of those plays he overthrew Ted Ginn, who was wide open and may have had a touchdown on the play. Using White more would likely allow him to get into a rhythm. With the Wildcat offense being an epic failure in the Atlanta game, however, garnering just four yards, is this fad fading?

This all established, Ricky Williams looked very quick and agile on Sunday, dispelling preseason talk from ESPN that he had lost a step. Still, one has to question if it’s the best thing for the Dolphins to keep Ronnie Brown–arguably the Dolphins most explosive offensive player–out for long stretches of the game simply because Williams is running the ball well. The Dolphins’ run defense was also solid, holding Atlanta’s Michael Turner to just 65 yards. Miami was 10th in the league last season at stopping the run.

An additional positive to note about the defending AFC East champions is the apparent resurgence of 35 year-old Jason Taylor. After a great preseason, Taylor proved he’s legit in 2009, starting off the regular season the right way with a sack. If he can regain the form that made him a perennial Pro Bowler, then the Dolphins may not have to rely on their offense as much throughout the year…and judging how they looked Week One, that could be a good thing.

Colts-Dolphins Prediction

My semi-confident prediction is that these two teams, who combined for only 21 points in week one, will score more this week.

But even with that potential for a low score, I think the Colts will find enough to cover the small spread.

The first week of football was a gift to football fans. We saw many exciting and close games. This week we might have another game with just as much as drama and excitement.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play the Chicago Bears in Chicago, and what makes this one a must watch is to see how both teams’ defenses play without their defensive captains. The Bears are going to have to play without middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, and the Steelers are without Troy Polamalu.

With both teams not having their main man on defense, the QBs could have big games this Sunday.

Here are the particulars for this Sunday’s matchup:

Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) at Chicago Bears (0-1)

Steelers-Bears Point Spread: Steelers -3.5

Steelers-Bears Over-Under: 37.5

StubHub: Steelers-Bears tickets as low as $130!

The Bears are coming off a very tough loss to the Packers, in which Jay Cutler threw four interceptions, but I see Cutler rebounding against this now weaker Steelers defense.

Despite the plethora of picks, Cutler’s day wasn’t all bad. He did connect with Hester for a touchdown, and he also connected with Johnny Knox. The throw to Knox was just beautiful, and it’s the Cutler I would like to see more of moving forward. The Bears have their work cut out for them again as they go against, arguably, the best defense in the NFL.

But are the Steelers that good without Polamalu?

My guess is yes.

This is still the dominant Steelers defense we saw last year win the Super Bowl. They will be very tough, but that doesn’t mean they are invincible.

The Bears’ defense can help the offense by playing well and making sure the Steelers defense doesn’t get much rest. Every defense needs rest, and one way to upset a good defense is to limit their rest time. The defense will be slower and that’s exactly what the Bears hope happens because that means Hester will be able to run all over the defense.

The Steelers, in the opener last Thursday, didn’t have much of a running game going on. They might not have to do much running this weekend if they can exploit the Bears pass defense. The Bears’ pass defense didn’t look bad last Sunday, but it still their weakest point. Nathan Vasher still gets beat every time he gets the ball thrown his way. I think he is a bust, but the coaches haven’t seen that yet.

My overall thought about this game is that the Steelers have the advantage, and for obvious reasons. They are the returning champions, they have a better defense, better coaching, better play calling, and a more consistent QB. With all these factors adding up, I don’t see the Bears winning this game.

But hey, prove me wrong Bears. I hope you do.
