A sports blog by and for Midwest Sports Fans
While taking my morning browse of the top Reddit headlines, I just stumbled upon the screenshot below, which appears to show a snippet of a Facebook chat. When I saw this, my immediate thought was: this guy is definitely from Indiana.
You’ll undoubtedly agree.
You may be wondering why I’m posting about Facebook on a sports blog. Fair question. Allow me to explain.
A question I get all the time is, “why isn’t Midwest Sports Fans on Facebook?” The easy answer would be, “Well, because Facebook sucks.” It would pretty much sum up the crux of my feelings.
But then I remember that a pickle became more popular than Nickelback on Facebook, and I think to myself that it can’t possibly be all that bad, right? I wonder if maybe I’m overreacting, just being stubborn, and need to give it a chance.
And then I watch a video and read an article like the video and article I saw tonight and have posted below, and I remember exactly why Midwest Sports Fans isn’t on Facebook: because Facebook sucks. In reality. And in cyberspace. And everywhere else too.
Nestled at the bottom of today’s Hot Clicks (hint: follow @jimmytraina) is an outstanding video that I feel needs to be shared with the masses, mainly because nearly every single person implied by the phrase “the masses” is probably on Facebook.
And in my humble opinion, Facebook sucks.
Yes, Facebook has its positives. At one time it was a nice, organized, relatively private and controlled way to keep in touch with friends and family, share photos and events, and – in a much less garish way than MySpace – create your own little personal shrine to yourself on the web. (Narcissism rules!)
It is not that anymore.
I was an early adopter to Facebook who quickly fell in love, used it throughout the day…and now no longer has an account.
The reasons for my Facebook deactivation are plentiful, but this entertaining video (hat tip to @jimmytraina and yesterday’s Hot Clicks) sums up a few of them pretty well.

Okay, so maybe Facebook doesn’t totally suck (oh, and MSF is on it now)
As many of you know, I have not been a particularly strong voice of support for Facebook over the last 18 months or so. In fact, I have vehemently opposed and avoided Facebook’s irresistible march to take over the social experience of the Internet.
The crowning “achievement” in my crusade to disparage Facebook was this post from March of 2010, which for a time was the #1 hit in Google for the search term “facebook sucks.” (And yes, I really was proud of this. Part of my day time job is search engine optimization, so you’ll have to forgive me.)
