Philadelphia Phillies v St. Louis Cardinals NLDS Preview: Analysis, TV Schedule, and Pitching Matchups

cardinals phillies nlds preview tv schedule pitching matchups

Lost in all the hoopla of the Red Sox losing a 9-game lead to the Rays was the Cardinals overcoming an 8.5 game deficit to the Atlanta Braves. It was not long ago that the Cardinals seemed to have no shot at the postseason. Just ask Nyjer Morgan back on September 7th:

“Where still n 1st and I hope those crying birds injoy watching tha Crew in tha Playoffs!!! Aaaaahhhhh!!!”

I can’t be the only person who wouldn’t mind seeing the Brewers have to get through the Cardinals setting up a Morgan vs. Pujols confrontation.

Cliff Lee just threw his third straight shutout.

He now has a remarkable 32-inning scoreless streak. Also, he has five wins during the month of June; the Florida Marlins have three.

Yeah, Cliff Lee is good at baseball.

Fantasy Baseball Pitching Primer: Must Start and Spot Start Options for Week of June 27, 2011

zack-greinke-fantasy

This week is one where you either have the solid two start pitchers or you don’t.  The good options this week are for the most part not around in free agency or on waivers in your league.

Texas, Oakland, Vernon Wells and the AL Worst

wells2

I was one of the few, it seemed, that felt Texas would repeat as AL West champs. And earlier this week, I wrote about how the 2011 Rangers are just as good, if not better, than the 2010 version.

Why is the (east coast) media doubting the Reds & Rangers?

Bronson Arroyo on Sunday, April 3

Considering we’re looking mostly at ESPN, that question may seem rhetorical, but even some guys at the venerable MLB Network (a fantastic channel) were picking the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Anaheim Angels and others to unseat the defending NL Central and AL West champs.

It’s still quite early, and I don’t gamble nor predict — especially in baseball where nothing is guaranteed and parity reigns supreme — but I’m pretty confident Cincinnati and Texas will be “just fine” in 2011.

The teams have opened a combined 9-0.

Cliff Lee clearly does not want to pitch in New York City

GM Brian Cashman

A text comes in early yesterday morning from a Yankee fan-friend:

“I wanted Lee but I don’t think he could have handled the pressure of pitching here…”

It’s GREAT to be a Philadelphia sports fan — even if their fans won’t admit it

Cliff Lee

The most coveted free agent of this offseason chose to return to Philadelphia mainly because he loved his three months there in 2009. That’s quite a compliment to the city, the team, and their fans.

Is it still any ‘fun’ to be a Yankee fan?

Cliff Lee

Perhaps I should ask, “is it truly a challenge anymore?”

I pondered this with respect to today’s news that – on the first morning of free agency — the Yankees are moving toward obtaining baseball’s prized free agent in Cliff Lee.

2010 World Series Preview: Texas Rangers vs. San Francisco Giants

302px-2010_World_Series_svg

The 106th edition of baseball’s World Series begins tomorrow night in San Francisco with the Giants and Rangers renewing their historic rivalry.

Oh wait, there is no established rivalry.

But with tickets selling at record pace with record prices, and die-hard fans quitting high-paying jobs to follow their teams, we do need some “themes,” no?

My advice to the Yankees on their rotation (Update: Poll added)

Andy Pettitte

It’s too late now as the game begins in ten hours, but I believe Joe Girardi and the Yanks are making a critical mistake throwing Andy Pettitte tonight against Cliff Lee.

I am as far from a Yankee fan as it gets, but I do believe my advice would aid them.

These two pictures sum up the 2010 Texas Rangers

rangers-douse-josh-hamilton-with-ginger-ale-after-alds

The White Sox didn’t make the playoffs this year and the Midwest’s only two representatives – the Twins and Reds – got their asses handed to them in the first round. So if we’re going to talk baseball here at Midwest Sports Fans, you’ll have to indulge us in some non-Midwest talk.

And since I live in Dallas, I have to admit that I have adopted the eminently likable Texas Rangers as the team I’m pulling for to win it all.

Cliff Lee strapped the Rangers onto his shoulders against the Rays and won two of the three games that ultimately propelled Texas into the ALCS to face the Yankees, for what should be a competitive, entertaining series.

I’m sure that AJ will preview both the ALCS and NLCS for us soon. This morning, I would simply like to offer up two pictures that perfectly sum up the 2010 Texas Rangers and how baseball fever is capturing this perpetually football-obsessed town.

MSF Podcast with SI’s Jimmy Traina: Meeting Derek Jeter, Chiding Chip Caray, and the Greatest SI Swimsuit Model Ever

mallory-snyder-si-swimsuit

Earlier this afternoon Myles and I had the great pleasure to host SI.com’s Jimmy Traina on the latest edition of the MSF Podcast.

We are grateful that he was able to take 30+ minutes out of his afternoon to talk with us, and impressed that he was able to be so composed…what with his beloved Yankees (especially Derek and Minka) preparing for Game 1 of the 2009 World Series tonight.

But I guess when you’ve already won 27 of them and can buy your way into the playoffs every year, it’s easy to stay even keel. (Actually, more on this topic later.)

If you are not familiar with his work, Jimmy Traina runs the Hot Clicks blog on SI.com and is an editor of the always entertaining Extra Mustard section of the site, which fuses sports, pop culture, and humor. Hot Clicks is one of the most visited sports pages on a daily basis, as any publisher knows who has ever received a link from Traina.

Let’s just say it can put a strain on your server.

Yankees-Phillies 2009 World Series Preview and TV Schedule

world-series-logo

There will not be a freeway series this year in baseball, nor will there be a cross-country coastal series. There will be an “Amtrak” Series, however.

And hopefully the Phils and Yanks will travel like The Babe did in the old days when they commute back and forth over the next week or so in the Fall Classic.

By virtue of a clutch game 4 win that gave them series control and an eventual second consecutive NL pennant, the Philadelphia Phillies will take on the New York Yankees, fresh off another close victory and series win over the gutsy Anaheim Angels.

Message to Larry Dolan: If You Pay Them, They Will Come!

cliff-lee-sabathia

Have you been paying attention to the Major League Baseball Playoffs? If so, and you’re a present or former Cleveland Indians Fan, you have noticed the ridiculous amount of former Indians playing outstanding baseball.

Meanwhile, Cleveland Indians owner Larry Dolan can’t figure out why the Indians’ attendance has plummeted since the Dick Jacobs days.

Here is a hint Larry: you have only paid Grady Sizemore, and that is it.

The Indians produce a mediocre team year in and year out, and the fans day by day miss Dick Jacobs more and more.

The title, “If You Pay Them, They Will Come” means that if you pay the players you let go, your fans would appear in groves to Progressive Field. With the talent you let go and that is currently stretched across the eight teams that made this year’s playoffs, you too would be contending for a World Series title.
