Eastern Conference Preview Part 2: ‘The Myths’ – Older Teams Will Struggle and the Indiana Pacers Will Be Good

danny-granger-paul-george

This is the second part of my three-part Eastern Conference preview, “The Men, the Myths, and Legends.”

Part 1 dealt with “the men” – specifically point guards, and even more specifically the ongoing debate about who is better between Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose (and which type of point guard is “preferred”). Click here to read Part 1.

Part 3 will published something to soon.

As for Part 2, which you are reading right now, we are going to delve into two myths that are being regurgitated time and again by fans and analysts alike as the 2011-12 season gets underway.

On to the Myths of 2012!

Commercial Grade: NBA 2K12 featuring Michael Jordan, Drake and Brian Wilson

brian-wilson-celtics-150x150

NBA 2K has built such a strong following that sports game giant EA Sports hasn’t even bothered to release a pro basketball game since 2009.  When I was a kid, NBA Live distracted me to the point that I basically turned into the South Park kids when they were addicted to World of Warcraft.

Nowadays I play the 2K series for my basketball fix, although without the extreme tenacity that I once devoted to gaming.  Even though the real life NBA is embroiled in a bitter labor dispute, that can’t stop me from enjoying going 80-2 while averaging a triple-double in “My Player” mode.

The main gimmick of this year’s game, in lieu of any relevant basketball happenings in the real world, is the “NBA’s Greatest” mode, where one can play as any of a large group of historical teams and players.  As such, the commercial released a couple weeks ago focuses on the argument of who is the greatest team ever assembled.

From the Rafters: A Look at Retired Numbers in the NBA

thumb

Less than 24 hours after Shaq tweeted his intentions to retire, one of his former teams announced a retirement of another kind. The Lakers said that they will retire Shaq’s #34 jersey, and #34 will join #13, #22, #25, #32, #33, #42, and #44 in the Staples Center rafters.

(Bonus points if you can name the Lakers player who wore each of those numbers.*)

Retiring numbers is by no means limited to the NBA, but the ritual is especially meaningful in basketball because a) an individual player can have a bigger impact on his franchise in basketball than in any other team sport, and b) basketball arenas are ideal for hanging banners. When you peruse the banners hanging from rafters around the league, you discover all sorts of interesting things.

For LeBron James, Third Time’s A Charm

lebron-pierce

For LeBron James this series meant it all.

It meant that he had another shot at going up against a team that had haunted him for years; it meant proving to the world that he did make the right Decision; and it was a milestone in his eight-year NBA career.

The Celtics have been the enemy since 2008, and LeBron James knew this coming into the series. No chalk-tosses at the beginning of games, no pre-game jokes, and no horsing around. This series meant straight up business for LeBron. And business is what James brought to this series, and it is exactly what he brought to Game 5 of this Eastern Conference Semifinals series.

Boston Celtics v Miami Heat Preview, Prediction & TV Schedule: The Revenge of LeBron and Wade

heat-celtics-preview

You read it right NBA fans:

The Revenge of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

The matchup we’ve been waiting for since the first game of the NBA’s long season has finally arrived. The battle of the top dogs in the East is here, as green meets red, north meets south, and stars meet stars.

While I believe this matchup has come too soon, I cannot argue at the fact that it is happening. Not only do both of these world-class organizations bring a good set of basketball skills to the table, but the matchup itself brings numerous sub-plots. Whether it is Shaq’s playoff return to Miami, or whether it be LeBron’s 3rd shot at taking down the C’s in the post-season, or perhaps even a little Delonte West gossip, it’s all packed in this series folks.

The NBA Morning After: Embrace the Heartbreak Edition

The Morning After is a look at the night that was in the NBA along with other NBA-related fodder.

When Amare Stoudemire’s nullified game-winner ripped the net in Madison Square Garden, ending an exhilarating 48 minutes wherein the Knicks for the most part exhibited confident, manic-by-design basketball, there was hardly enough time to process what we’d just seen before we had to acknowledge that yes, the New York Knicks are once again a team worth paying attention to.

And they clearly are, and that is a good thing. When everything is flowing as effortlessly as it was for much of last night, they will push the elite teams in this league. With D’Antoni as coach, they’ve had a system ready and waiting. It wasn’t until this season, and the additions of Stoudemire, Felton and Fields that the blueprint and pieces have been so in-sync, rather than rubbing against one another like sandpaper. So yes, there is finally an upside for the New York Knicks, a reason to get excited, one that isn’t five years down the road. For a rebuilding team, that is arriving.

Last year, on a smaller market scale, the Milwaukee Bucks arrived. We Feared the Deer and watched as John Salmons became the consistent wing scorer they needed. We watched as they pushed forward after the devastating Bogut injury and took an apathetic Atlanta Hawks team to the brink in the playoffs. Safe to say, any expectations of Milwaukee last year were far surpassed, because there probably weren’t any.

The NBA Morning After: Gifts That Keep On Giving Edition

The Morning After is a look at the night that was in the NBA along with other NBA-related fodder.

The mood in Philadelphia changed from sunny to rather murky in around 6.6 seconds when, following a go-ahead Andre Iguodala running layup, Rajon Rondo zipped a perfect inbound lob to Kevin Garnett, who banked home the winning bucket with about a second left to play. The real surprising part to me is that there wasn’t more yelling after all of this.

The NBA Morning After: Possibilities Actualized Edition

The Morning After is a look at the night that was in the NBA along with other NBA-related fodder.

The Miami Heat. Holy shit. Road game in hostile environment? Yup. Opposing team strong in the front-court and point guard positions, Miami’s two biggest weaknesses? Yup. A focused, unrelenting, fast-paced, ice-cold statement win? Yes, yes, yes and yes.

For the first time this season, the Heat played The Game We Were All Waiting For, when everything looked beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Have we finally seen the Dark Passenger?

The NBA Morning After: The Heat at an Arm’s Length Edition

The Morning After is a look at the night that was in the NBA along with other NBA-related fodder

– The Celtics sauntered into that hornet’s nest they call the AmericanAirlines Arena (no), got in the driver’s seat of this game, and never looked back. They didn’t have to; Miami always seemed a few minutes, or possessions, or plays away from truly making this one a nail biter.

Boston was head and shoulders above the Heat in on-court organization. They didn’t weren’t bothered by anything thrown at them all night, consistently making plays that kept their hand on Miami’s collective forehead anytime the Heat tried to get closer.

I don’t know what to say about this, and I don’t know any of the backstory, except that this video is originally from 2008.

I just know that you absolutely have to watch and admire these two splendid minutes of Epic Celtics Fan doing live, in front of 20,000 people, what most of us will only do in front of our bedroom mirrors in the privacy of our own homes.

The NBA Morning After: Opening Night Edition

lebron-heat-game-1

Welcome to the Morning After, a look at the night that was in the NBA and other NBA-related fodder.

– The Miami Heat’s patchwork lineup of unknowns fell to the well-seasoned Boston Celtics, 88-80, as notable-acquisition-not-named-Eddie-House LeBron James dropped a game-high 31 points on 10-for-21 shooting.

This was a sloppy game. Lots of the famous LeBron-on-five offense was on display from his Anakin Skywalker years in Cleveland, and the Heat simply could not make up for all their wasted possessions. Dwyane Wade did an awesome Cleveland Cavalier-Larry Hughes impression, finishing with 13 points on 16 shots, six assists and six turnovers.

NBA Finals Recap (Game 5): The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But…

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 5): Lakers – 89/Celtics: 96

The pendulum is now in full swing for the Celtics’ side, as they took over in Game 5.

What is the reason the Celtics won the 2008 NBA Finals? Because of defense, defens,e and more defense.

To be honest, when Ray Allen was stroking it from three, and Garnett was faking you in the paint, and when Pierce was stepping back and wetting it, that is all a plus; but the Celtics are where they are because of defense, and it sure showed as the C’s held the Lakers to under 40% shooting in both FG% and three-point %.

Dazzling enough for you?

NBA Finals Recap (Game 4): Finally Some Team Ball

NBA Finals 2010 (Game 4): Lakers – 89/Lakers – 96

Well, I was right my friends!

If the Celtics play team basketball, they can take this series, and shove it down the Lakers’ throats. That is exactly what happened last night, as the C’s shut out the Lakers the entire game, as Kobe and Co barely saw the light of day.
