Top 20 NBA Ballers of My Lifetime

Editor’s note: We are currently preparing an article in which a number of MSF writers submitted their top 20 NBA players of all-time. The goal is to see where Dirk falls in the top 20, or if he even makes it at all. Evan decided to narrow his scope a bit and go with the top 20 players of his lifetime. So we are posting his article first, with the mega top 20 article to come. Stay tuned…

Also note that Evan is 22 and says that he really started watching the NBA during the 1997-98 season.

It’s top-20 NBA Players mania around here right now, all thanks to Dirk Nowitzki’s superstar performance in earning his first ring this month. Everyone from announcers to journalists to bloggers are saying Dirk has hit legendary status, maybe even top 20 of all time. I think that sounds a tad high for Dirk, but he now has some serious hardware to reasonably back up the claim to a top-20 spot.

For my own part, I have always thought that the NBA MVP award was the most meaningful of any of the four major sports. Scan the list and you’ll notice every single winner is a Hall of Famer or well on his way to being enshrined. Dirk has his MVP award, he has his Finals MVP award, and most importantly he has his ring.

But is he on par with Larry Bird? Or is that just the most racially convenient historical comparison bandied by most experts?

Honestly, I don’t really know because I never actually saw Larry Bird play. But I have seen plenty of other great players, so for my Top-20 NBA Players list, I decided to restrict myself to those guys I’ve actually seen play. Here is my list with some highly subjective choices, some no doubters, and perhaps one begrudgingly included sharpshooter who burned my New York Knicks many years ago.

Allen Iverson – 15 points – First game for some nameless team in Europe

As I read the ticker on ESPN tonight, I got to thinking.

What is it about someone that makes him a legend?

Sometimes, it’s a specific play — ask Doug Flutie.  Other guys have legendary numbers — Gretzky, Aaron, Kareem.  A select few had a skill set that transcended the sport — think, Dr. J on the basketball court, or Barry Sanders on the gridiron.

The greatest of all time usually combine two of those, or even all three.

For some reason, in basketball, one thing trumps everything else, and without it, you will never be considered one of the GOATs.  Maybe your game was transcendent, or maybe you had unreal stats.  But the fact remains — without the rings, you are not a legend.  You can’t be.  It’s simply not allowed.

DJ Steve Porter is Back… with “Press Hop 2″

michelle-beadle

DJ Steve Porter, he of the infamous “Press Hop” video that made Allen Iverson’s “Practice” speech less of a bitchy grips and more of a sing-a-long, is back.

And while “Press Hop 2″ is nowhere near as good as the original, it still does not disappoint, especially if you’re like me and enjoy seeing old clips of Bob Knight imploring his critics to kiss his ass.

Without further rambles from yours truly, here is the video:

The Answer for Cleveland?

There were swirls of trades and signings this off-season, and the swirling has continued into the regular season,  and you know what? Not much has seemed to changed as we head into the early weeks of the NBA season.

There has been speculation on:

  • Stephen Jackson leaving
  • Carlos Boozer wanting out
  • Monta Ellis considering leaving
  • Delonte being on the block

And a few others.

But one rumor that seems t0 be picking up a lot of momentum seems to be a much tastier thought.

Allen Iverson to Cleveland.

Pistons Bring Cell Phones, 100-Pound Trucks, and Whining to Cleveland: Cavs Win 79-73

Allen Iverson Comments After Pistons-Cavs Game | Cavs winThere was a time in the not so distant NBA past where the Detroit Pistons were the class of the Eastern Conference, a team to be reckoned with on a nightly basis to be sure. And they also stood for something: No real superstar. Five solid, All-Star caliber players playing together and putting individual accolades on the back burner with team goals in mind every time they laced ‘em up.

Those Pistons were, in a lot of respects, the model NBA team. Like them or not, you had to respect them. But, as I said on Sunday night, its hard to even Remember those Pistons anymore.

The Cavaliers played a bad game last night for the most part. Now granted, a bad game from LBJ still nets 25 points, 12 rebounds, and a few assists, but he was noticeably off for most of the night. In that same game, Mo Williams couldn’t throw it in the ocean, Ilguauskas had 4 points, and Delonte West had to sit for stretches in the 2nd half after getting a technical foul.

But with all that said, they still beat the Pistons 79-73, and are now 25 games up on Detroit in the standings, with a record of 61-13.

25 Games Up.

In addition to that, as reported by Cleveland’s ESPN 850 WKNR talk show host Tony Rizzo today, there were Piston players “talking on their cell phones duAllen Iverson Comments After Pistons-Cavs Gamesring warm-ups.” Maybe they were calling Chauncey Billups for a “trade-back” because, other than Chauncey, it’s all the same faces in the D these days, and it ain’t all good.

The guy they got for Mr. Bigshot, Allen Iverson, isn’t exactly helping things. A.I. had this to say in response to the Tuesday night loss to the Cavaliers:

“How many minutes did I play? It seemed way, way, way less than that. Eighteen minutes? Come on, man. I can play 18 minutes with my eyes closed and with a 100-pound truck on my back. It’s a bad feeling, man. I’m wondering what they rushed me back for? For that?

“It’s a bad time for me mentally.”

And its a pretty bad time for the Pistons too Allen. Mentally, physically, and in the loss column. 36-38 isn’t exactly what Joe Dumars had in mind this season.

If only that Darko pick had worked out the way he thought it would…

Joe Dumars……Genius?

PISTONS DUMARS VP

Some people (read: fans of the Detroit Pistons) have regaled their GM Joe Dumars as a genius. The first thing that comes to mind is that SNL Weekend Update bit “Really!?…you think Joe Dumars is a genius…really”. Granted….he’s good. The Pistons have a championship this decade and they make the Eastern Conference finals every year. But, that’s over.

Joe Dumars Detroit PistonsDumars kept threatening to break up this team over the summer. He said no one was safe. Then he finally made his move. He finally did it in the first week of the season sending Chauncey Billups back to Colorado to play for Denver along with Antonio McDyess (who was later released) for former super star shooting guard Allen “Practice?” Iverson. Dumars wanted to get rid of Billups’s's’s big contract…I get that. Why not trade for another or maybe a bigger wingman (Carmelo Anthony)? Last time I checked, Rip Hamilton plays the same position as A.I. On top of that, Iverson is not really known as a team player or a leader….which is something they lost with the departure of Billups. I was already very skeptical of another Eastern Conference Finals run for the Pistons…now I’m sure they’ll be out in the second round at the latest. Even if Rodney Stuckey is the superstar everyone in Detroit thinks he is going to be.

Allen Iverson is in a contract year which will free up some cap space in the upcoming LeBron sweepstakes. But, do you really think any big time free agents are going want to move to dreary, cold and Matt Milleny Detroit….let alone LeBron James. Yeah…suuuuure, LeBron is going to leave Cleveland for division rival Detroit…not New York…or Miami. I could see James going to Greece before he goes to Detroit. Detroit will end up signing someone old for too much money…I don’t know who…but I just don’t see a young superstar in a Pistons jersey unless it’s out of the draft.

The funniest thing about all of this to all of me is that Detroit could really use a big guy that can slash his way to hoop and still hit the outside shot. Someone big that can create offense….someone like Carmelo Anthony. He would be a perfect fit for this team.

David Stern: “with the second pick in the 2003 NBA Draft the Detroit Pistons select Darko Milicic”

The very next pick? Carmelo Anthony to the Denver Nuggets.

Yeah…Joe Dumars is a genius. He had the second pick in one of the most talent rich drafts in history…and he took a risk on Darko? 4 of the top 5 picks from that draft are All Stars and Olympic Gold medalist. He passed on Carmello Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh for that pick.

So, yeah, Joe Dumars is good…..but this is not a great trade. And for that matter…he shouldn’t have run Larry Brown out to hire Flip Saunders.

The Pistons are getting older, and slower and the long season will catch up with them. Iverson will be gone at the end of his contract and the Pistons will have little to nothing to show for it.

Meanwhile Denver just got a tried and true real, actual PG and freed up another 1500 shots a year for Anthony and SG J.R. Smith. I think this was a great trade for them that will help them in their playoff push in the tight Western Conference.

Joe Dumars is a good GM…but he’s not the genius that Detroit fans think he is.
