Attention Fantasy Football Players: Revised Week 9 Outlook for Matt Schaub

Earlier this week in my start em, sit em post, I recommended that you should start David Garrard over Matt Shaub in Week 9. I’ll let you read the post to get the full detail of the reasoning, but it boiled down to the following two points:

#1 – the Colts have the 7th best pass defense in the league in terms of yards given up (180.1 yards per game) and have given up the fewest touchdown passes (three). Thus, I looked at Matt Schaub as a shaky start.

#2 – David Garrard and his Jaguars are at home this week taking on the Kansas City Chiefs and their crappy pass defense. Garrard is only playable when he’s at home and this seems like about as plum a matchup as you’ll get if you’re a Garrard owner.

There is a problem though. A couple of them. And I’m changing my vote to Schaub over Garrard for Week 9.

Friday Morning Would…You Rather Have Your Teams’ Best Player Date Minka Kelly or Kate Hudson?

minka-kate

The 2009 World Series embodies everything that a Midwest baseball fan hates.

1) No representation from either of the Central Divisions. That’s right, no White Sox, Cubs, Cardinals, Tigers, Twins, Brewers, Astros, Indians, etc. In fact, none of these teams even really came close.

2) Two straight weeks of complete immersion in the East Coast bias/obsession that can become so annoying and grating during the regular season.

3) A battle of two teams with enormous payrolls who, on a yearly basis, pluck the best players off of teams in smaller markets who cannot afford them. (And yes, I know the Cubs, and to a certain extent the White Sox, have a high payroll…but Chicago gets Milton Bradley and Alex Rios, New York and Philly get C.C. and Cliff Lee.)

With all of that being said, I’ve decided that we have done enough actual analysis of this year’s World Series. AJ wrote a great preview piece earlier this week, and that will have to suffice.

In place of the article that I was going to write about the 2009 World Series (currently tied at 1-1 if you live in The Shire and don’t get Fox or have an Internet connection) before I thought more about it and just got pissed off, I decided that we could all benefit from a couple of gratuitous photo galleries of two of the most attractive WAGs on either team.

So while there are many legit questions out there as the series heads to Philly (What’s up with ARod and Ryan Howard? Does either manager have faith in its bullpen?), we are going to tackle one that is perhaps a little less exigent as part of our usual Friday Morning Would series.

Would you rather have your favorite baseball hero date Minka Kelly or Kate Hudson?

Friday Morning Would…You Rather Start Marion Barber or Jonathan Stewart in Week 7?

jonathan-stewart-marion-bar

I’ve got a flight to catch at 5:20 — headed to Cleveland for the Sports Media 360 conference — and a full day of work to squeeze in between now and when I leave the office around 2:30. Thus, there is no time to waste.

Let’s get right to our usual Friday Morning Would debate.

Today, we are going to look at two running backs who have had up and down seasons to this point: Dallas battering ram Marion Barber and Panthers second-year scamperer Jonathan Stewart.

A few weeks ago, when Barber was tearing it up and Stewart was on the sidelines nursing what seemed to be an endless array of maladies, this would have been a no-brainer.

But as we know, things can change quickly in the NFL. And as Week 7 approaches, I am suggesting that you start Jonathan Stewart over Marion Barber.

Here’s why:

Friday Morning Would…You Start Brandon Jacobs or Ahmad Bradshaw?

jacobs-bradshaw-giants-patriots-super-bowl-46-preview-prediction

Two of the hottest names in fantasy football this week are teammates Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants.

The reasons for the buzz around these two, however, are starkly different.

Jacobs has made news this week because of what appears to be growing frustration with his own subpar performances of late, and perhaps even jealousy at the success of his backfield mate. Bradshaw is generating buzz because he has rushed for 278 yards on only 37 carries over the past three weeks.

With the Giants facing their most stern defensive test of the season this Sunday — against the undefeated New Orleans Saints — which Giants running back will make the better Week 6 start: Brandon Jacobs or Ahmad Bradshaw?

Friday Morning Would…You Rather Own Mohamed Massaquoi or Pierre Garcon?

pierre-garcon-massaquoi

Before we begin this Friday’s Morning Would column, I want to make a declaration about one of its subjects, Browns rookie WR Mohammed Massaquoi.

And that declaration is as follows: henceforth on Midwest Sports Fans, Mohammed Massaquoi will be known as MoMass. This a common practice among fantasy writers and players who are lazy and don’t feel like typing out long, complicated names (ex. Maurice Jones-Drew is “MJD” and DeAngelo Williams is “DAW”).

You see, as much as I love MoMass, both as a building block for the Browns and as a fantasy sleeper for the balance of 2009, his name is one of those difficult ones that is very hard to get through typing without making a mistake.

Here, I’ll try a couple of times typing it at my normal rate without stopping: Mohammed Maaquia; Mohammed Massaquoi, Mohammed Massaqoo, Mohammed Massaquoi, Mohammed Massaqio.

As you can see, the second and fourth attempts were spot on. But 40% accuracy is not acceptable to be. so I’m shortening it to MoMass and that’s that.

And now we can move on to more important subjects…

Two of the hottest names in the WR sleeper category this week — and certainly two of the players that I have been asked about the most in the comments section of the Week 5 start em, sit em post — are MoMass and Pierre Garcon.

This morning, I will analyze which of these two players I’d rather have on my team in Week 5 and beyond.

Friday Morning Would…You Choose Jenna Fischer (Pam) or Rashida Jones (Karen)?

[Editor's Note: Welcome to MSF's new Morning Would series. This will be a regular feature here on the site where I basically have carte blanche to write about anything I want to. (And this differs from every other post...how?)

Primarily, I will be taking advantage of this feature on mornings like today, when there are no obvious hot button topics to tackle nor other weekly features to post, and I feel like invoking a clever, slightly crass pun while also providing "useful" info. Enjoy.]

We’re going off-topic with this one and taking a quick break from sports. Just for fun.

I don’t watch a whole lot of TV that does not involve sports. Lately, however, I have been catching up on old TV shows by buying the DVDs and watching an episode or two late at night while I wind down and fall asleep. Among the shows that I’d never seen and have now gotten caught up on: Scrubs, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Burn Notice, and the incomparable Arrested Development.

So don’t point and laugh when I tell you that I have only recently discovered the greatness of The Office over the past month or so. Just last night I finished up the final episode of Season Three.

Before I’d seen the show, I never really understood what all of the fuss was about.
Now I know, and I get it…completely. (And even though I’m about to discuss two of the ladies from The Office, Dwight Schrute is clearly the best part about the show.)

Friday Morning Would…You Start Glen Coffee or Steve Slaton in Week 4?

In today’s edition of Morning Would, I am going to expound upon an answer I gave in the comments section of this week’s fantasy football Start Em, Sit Em post.

A reader asked whether I would start Glen Coffee or Steve Slaton at running back, and something tells me other people may have this very same decision to make this week at their #2 RB slot, or own one of these two players and are wondering what to expect in Week 4.

My answer is that I like both of them this week, but that I would start Steve Slaton, and here’s why:
