2008 Hesiman Trophy Candidates

Well December is here, which means that the Heisman Trophy winner will be announced soon. Personally I’m predicting a Big 12 winner, but that is as far as I can go because both Sam Bradford of OU and Colt McCoy of Texas have had excellent seasons and presented excellent cases as candidates. I am leaning towards Sam Bradford, but either one could win the Heisman Trophy, and be more than justified.

Sam Bradford has thrown for 4468 yards and 48 touchdowns in an extremely tough Big 12 conference. In the last 5 games, Oklahoma has hung at least 60 points on their opponent. These opponents include the second ranked Texas Tech and the twelfth ranked Oklahoma State. This impressive season could mean that Sam Bradford will be the Heisman Trophy winner.

Colt McCoy has also put his name in the hat for the Heisman Trophy this season, throwing for 3445 yards and 32 touchdowns while rushing for 10 more on his own. He has truly been the MVP for the Longhorns, who were kept out of the National Championship game by the flawed BCS, but that’s another story.

Other candidates include Florida’s Tim Tebow, Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell, and Iowa’s Shonn Greene.

Last years Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow, has also had a great season with 25 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns to boot. This is more impressive considering the utter class that is the SEC, however his 2515 passing yards combined with his TD rate simply cannot compare to either Sam Bradford or McCoy.

Graham Harrell, who leads the always impressive Texas Tech offense, is a candidate who also had a good year. With 4747 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes, Harrell is no slouch, but his team’s crushing loss to Oklahoma definitely hurt his chances for the Heisman Trophy.

Finally the NCAA’s leading rusher for the season, Shonn Greene definitely deserves to be considered a candidate. Greene rushed for at least 100 yards every game this season. With 1729 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, Greene is certainly no slouch, but 2008 was the year of the quarterback, and Greene does not have a chance at this year’s Heisman Trophy.

The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced on December 15, 2008 in New York.

Who Will Win the Heisman Trophy?

  • Colt McCoy- Texas (22%, 83 Votes)
  • Sam Bradford- Oklahoma (36%, 132 Votes)
  • Tim Tebow- Florida (42%, 148 Votes)

Total Voters: 370

BCS Declares Palin Winner of Presidential Election, Obama Number 3

As I was listening to the Dallas area sports radio station 1310 The Ticket, the hosts of BaD Radio read a mock story on the BCS rankings for World War II. A quick Googling of the title of the report led me to the results of the BCS rankings for World War II, posted on Bleacherreport.com, with a big win for Germany. Inspired, I wondered what would happen if the BCS were applied to other walks of life, specifically the US election. The results may surprise you.

Sarah Palin Wins Presidential Election, Barack Obama Third

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants, the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Sarah Palin to be the winner of the 2008 Presidential Election.

“Palin started with some important early victories beginning with her election as Mayor of Wasilla, and followed with decisive conference wins in the election for Governor of Alaska and the nomination for Vice President. Her only losses came against Katie Couric and Tina Fey, however considering her strength of schedule, the computers determined her season worthy of a true number 1.

When asked about the number 3 ranking for Senator Barack Obama, the BCS commissioner stated “Obama really only had 2 major victories. Those victories were over Hillary Clinton in the Primaries and John McCain in the general election. The BCS computers don’t consider head to head victories like humans do. Those victories are still only viewed as a single game with equal weight to other games.”

President-Elect Sarah Palin commented on her massive upset. “It was tough after those two late losses to Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson, but I defeated Romney for the Vice President nod, and he was ranked as the BCS number 2 in preseason.”

Romney, after the high expectations in the preseason, dropped out of the top 10 and ended up narrowly beating Senator Barney Frank to finish at 11. Senator Frank, who was unable to overcome the shattering losses to the Economic Crisis and Papa Bear Bill O’Reilly, was unable to remain in the top 25.

John McCain’s ranking of 5th has also come under question. The BCS commented “John McCain had a major loss to Senator Barack Obama in early November. If the loss had come earlier in the season, say September, McCain maybe could have recovered, however, similar to Texas Tech, McCain just lost too late in the season.

As expected, Senator Joe Biden finished in the number 2 spot, making him the Vice President of the United States.

For those who missed it, here is the replay of the crucial Franks loss to O’Reilly in week 7.

Authors Note- Obviously, none of this is true, but nevertheless, be thankful that the flawed BCS is only used for college football.

Adam Pacman Jones, Jerry Jones, The Dallas Cowboys, and Roger Goodell’s Promises

Adam Pacman Jones Back with Cowboys

I realize that this is a rant about the Dallas Cowboys on a Midwest sports blog, but if I do not get this out of my system, I might break down into tears. Can someone please tell me why Adam “Pacman” Jones is still inthe National Football League? I am at a complete loss. It is astounding how many chances this man (and I use the word extremely loosely) has been given by Roger Goodell and Jerry Jones.

A quick review of Adam “Pacman” Jones’ rap-sheet shows a laundry list of bad decisions, arrests, and more bad decisions. And while I am in no way saying Adam is responsible for it, someone stole my Ipod from my local gym last year, so…

My point in all this is to ask why Roger Goodell is not setting an example for the rest of the league. The time of second chances is over, and has been for a long time. The National Football League has to take a stand at some point. Meaningless suspensions simply are not getting the message across. The Dallas Cowboys are in my mind the epitome of greatness in sport, whose feats of might and athletic prowess are only surpassed by the likes of Hercules and Samson. However, after this debacle, I am beginning to wonder how a football genius like Jerry Jones can make such a tragic blunder.

Terrell Owens Dallas Cowboys

Adam Jones has had his chances. I do not mean to sound harsh, because I truly believe in the power of second chances. Jerry Jones made the right call of bringing Tank Johnson to the Dallas Cowboys. Tank seems to have learned the error of his ways. The same goes for Terrell Owens… ok maybe he still has an ego that makes Jerry Jones look like Mother Theresa, but at least he has simmered somewhat. However Adam “Pacman” Jones has crossed the line too many times.

This is not so much a problem for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys as it is for Roger Goodell and the entire National Football League. Eventually, players will begin to realize that Roger Goodell’s promises of punishment for infractions are hollow and are worth about as much as Confederate money. When that happens it won’t be too long before we see more Adam Jones’s.

There, I said it and now I am at peace. Of course, if Adam “Pacman” Jones were to run back a punt or two this week against the Steelers or get a game winning pick-six, I might be back next week accusing Jrod of hacking my account and writing this post, but we’ll just have to wait until Sunday to see if that is the case.

Mike Jenkins, Derrick Ward and the Dallas Cowboys Season

I have been asked to do the impossible, to defend Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins for his sheer cowardice in not attempting to tackle Derrick Ward. However, as a maverick, I shall pull the Palin defense and completely dodge the question by talking about something else.

There is absolutely nothing to say about the Jenkins non-tackle. He’s a professional, a grown man, and he should act like it. I am more concerned with the overall picture and a bigger question. What happened to the Dallas Cowboys this season?

It is clear that there is a major problem with the team. Some point to the injuries that have decimated the team. The offense is a shambles without quarterback Tony Romo and rookie sensation Felix Jones to boost the running game, among a host of other injuries on both sides of the ball. Yet the injury excuse does not truly explain the disaster that is the Dallas Cowboys season.

Even before the injuries, the Cowboys were not playing well. The loss to the Washington Redskins was something that did not have to happen. The game against the Arizona Cardinals did not need to end as it did. Even the win against Chad Ocho-Cinco Johnson and the Cincinnati Bengals was relatively weak.

Watching the disgraceful, abysmal performance against the Giants, I realized something. The Cowboys are not really even trying.
