We always knew that it would complicate things, change them, make them feel dirty, but now money is taking over the game that Americans really hold dear to their heart: college football.
When I watched that terrible excuse for a coach, Lane Kiffin, stand in an untucked white polo in front of the press in Knoxville last night and say “There wasn’t one day that I didn’t work my hardest for this program,” I wondered, “How?”
How could that be true?
If it was true then you would be too damn proud of your blood, sweat and tears to walk away. These young men’s lives would mean too much for you to walk away like that.
You would be able to see their mothers and fathers faces in June lit with pride, whose hands you shook when they invited you into their home and then dropped their sons off for camp after high school graduation. You’d hear the small talk you made with their little brothers about being a Volunteer one day in your office.
You know that’s a lie, now, right?

All you could hear was Jay Bilas talking about how Notre Dame could come back, “Give it to Harangody…They have got to see Harangody down low…He has got to get to the line more.†He did that, but it did not solve the recent woes of a sliding Irish team. It has been clear in the last two games that Notre Dame, while hanging tough, may not be the contender in the Big East that everyone thought they were. It has a lot to do with Luke Harangody. Back up the truck, chief. Harangody is a beast, he’s a corn-fed monster with a stroke. I wonder aloud what he could do at offensive tackle. Speculation aside, his work is on the court and he can’t do it all for the Irish to win in the Big East, that is becoming crystal clear, with the Irish taking their 5th in conference loss on the chin Tuesday night from Marquette.

Minnesota basketball is enjoying unseen success, since the addition of Tubby Smith. The team has exploded out of the gate to 11-0 and entered the nation’s top 20. They are sitting at 16-1, now, with their only loss coming to a seriously tough Michigan State team. They notched another gutsy win in Wisconsin last night, and I’m trying to find out what’s responsible for this team’s performance on the court, the inspiration seems to be on the bench, though.

Bears.

Jim Tressel and Mark Dantonio both admitted outright this week that they don’t look forward to playing each other this weekend in East Lansing. The two worked together most recently in 2002 for OSU’s championship run but had been together for years before that. It’s not bad blood, it’s just close, too close for anyone to be comfortable. While impartial fans look forward to the game, the reality is this week could be a watershed for either team. Both squads sit at 6-1. The Spartans could continue to prove that the coaching change is the best news around, and leading an improved running game and defense will put Michigan State in the mix for a New Year’s Day bid. Trouble is, they haven’t had any big wins, the Northwestern win was solid, but any Big Ten contender should win that game. Their stock will continue to rise if they can beat the Bucks at home. The Ohio State University, however, is coming off a very shaky win against Purdue, and Buckeyes fans seem like they are waiting for this team to fall, but would rather see it happen against Penn State.
