Video: Javier Baez hits game-winning home run in debut

Well that was quite a debut Mr. Baez.

Rookie second baseman Javier Baez was called up by the Chicago Cubs before Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies and went hitless in his first five at bats. Then he stepped to the plate in the top of the 12th inning to face Boone Logan with the score tied 5-5. Here’s what happened next:

And Cubs Nation went absolutely nuts. The 21-year-old Baez launched the first pitch he saw from Logan (a 91 mph fastball) 406 feet into right center field. His first major league hit and home run wound up being the difference in the game as the Cubs won 6-5.

Baez is one of baseball’s top prospects so his debut was watched a lot of people who aren’t even Cubs fans. His first five at bats didn’t look so great, especially considering he racked up three strikeouts. But when he got around on that fastball by Logan and sent it over the wall in right center, his insane bat speed and power were on display for all to see.
