Washington Redskins: Mike Shanahan confirms Robert Griffin III will start Week 1

The Washington Redskins and their fans have been on edge for months wondering if their franchise quarterback would be ready to start the 2013 NFL season. On Monday they got their answer.

Robert Griffin IIIRedskins head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that Robert Griffin III would indeed start the team’s Week 1 matchup on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Griffin is almost nine months removed from having the ACL of his right knee reconstructed for the second time. The LCL of the same knee also needed some repair done to it after suffering two separate injuries to the same knee late in the 2012 season.

Shanahan said Griffin was “full speed ahead” and “ready to go.” He then continued by saying, “I feel very good where Robert’s at. And he’ll be our starter on Monday night unless there’s some crazy setback that we don’t anticipate.”

Griffin has seen Dr. James Andrews several times to get check-ups on his surgically repaired knee and the world-renown surgeon apparently has no concerns about the quarterback’s current health.

The Redskins selected Griffin with the second overall choice of the 2012 NFL Draft and immediately made him the face of their franchise by entrusting him with the starting quarterback job as a rookie. The Baylor product responded with a remarkable season.

In 2012, Griffin completed 65.6 percent of his passes (258 of 393) for 3,200 yards, with 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. That gave him a quarterback rating of 102.4. He also rushed for 815 yards and seven more touchdowns on 120 carries.

The 23-year-old led the Redskins to a 10-6 record and an NFC East division crown. Griffin was also named the 2012 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and the 2012 Sporting News Rookie of the Year, while being selected to the Pro Bowl. So yeah, I guess you could say he had a pretty decent first year in the league.

Griffin has not played at all during the preseason, so when he steps on the field against the Eagles on Monday night he may look a bit rusty. But the Redskins should just be happy he’s back at all, considering how brutal his injury was.

It may take the young signal-caller a few weeks to get used to playing in game action again, but there’s no reason to believe he’ll be hindered in any way moving forward.
