Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Key players to add for Week 3

The fantasy football waiver wire continues to build up as each week becomes increasingly important.

Winning now obviously saves you from headaches later and that can only occur by making key roster adjustments as the year moves onward. Everyone has a few, if not more, star players which isn’t much of an advantage. It’s the deeper rosters where everyone scores consistently that develop consistency.

With that in mind, let’s check out some key waiver wire adds for Week 3

Ryan TannehillRyan Tannehill: QB, Dolphins (vs. Falcons)

Whether you’re desperate for a quarterback or are in a two-QB league, Ryan Tannehill is a better option than at first glance.

Despite just two touchdown passes on the season, Tannehill has completed 65.3 percent of his attempts and has thrown for 591 yards. The Dolphins logged an impressive road win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, and Tannehill spread the field to six different targets.

Taking on the Atlanta Falcons this week, it’s definitely an upgraded test from Week 2. That said, with Tannehill’s strong arm to hit Mike Wallace down field, Miami is capable of moving the rock consistently. So, if you need a backup quarterback or a second starter in two-QB leagues, Tannehill is worth a look. He is almost certainly still available at this point in the season.

James Starks: RB, Packers (at Bengals)

Running back James Starks is quite appealing entering Week 3. For one, Green Bay rookie ball-carrier Eddie Lacy suffered a concussion against the Washington Redskins. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, Lacy was concussed early in the game:

Green Bay Packers rookie running back Eddie Lacy was knocked out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins with a concussion.

Lacy suffered the injury at the end of his first carry of the game, a 10-yard run on the Packers’ opening series.

Secondly, Starks not only filled in, but did so ably. Along with rushing for 132 yards, Starks scored and added 36 receiving yards on four catches. Proving to be a dual-threat back, his contributions can be expected to increase against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have a great defense, but Starks should be able to rack up yards since Cincinnati won’t be able to stack the box. If the Bengals do that, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will chew up Cincinnati’s secondary.

Starks could also be a great long-term add, as the Packers have relied on him before and no one has any idea how long Lacy will be sidelined.

Kellen Winslow: TE, Jets (vs. Bills)

As a flex or backup tight end Kellen Winslow has found a decently reliable new home with the New York Jets. Geno Smith is clearly Gang Green’s quarterback for the future, and, not surprisingly, he’s depended on the veteran target to make some plays.

Although a Week 2 game against the Patriots in rough weather conditions wasn’t ideal for him, Winslow has 10 catches for 95 yards and a score so far this season. He still possesses the athleticism to gain sound yards after the catch, and in deeper leagues he’ll come in handy.

As for Week 3, the Jets typically have Buffalo’s number and Winslow’s production will be important to New York’s success in 2013.
