This is absolutely crazy. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres got into a massive brawl in a preseason game on Sunday night that even included a goalie fight. And if you’re anything like me, you love a good goalie fight.
The brawl began when Sabres heavyweight John Scott initiated a fight with Toronto’s Phil Kessel with 10:01 left in the third period. That came after a fight between the Leafs’ Jamie Devane and Buffalo’s Corey Tropp. The Leafs rushed over to protect Kessel and an all-out war broke out, that included Kessel taking some shots at Scott with his stick.
Tropp was injured in the original fight when his helmet came off and Devane sent him falling to the ice. Tropp appeared to hit his head flush on the ice and looked woozy getting up. It’s possible that Scott didn’t like that Devane kept fighting despite Tropp having lost his helmet and decided to go after Kessel to retaliate.
After the Leafs rushed to Kessel’s defense, the entire lines of both teams were engaged in the fight. Then Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier and Sabres netminder Ryan Miller went after each other, got locked up and threw some bombs in probably the best goalie fight I’ve ever seen.
Leafs forward David Clarkson actually left the bench to go after Scott after he targeted Kessel, and the two of them went after each other for a bit as well. Clarkson was given a 10-minute bench penalty and will almost certainly get a 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to fight.
There were 16 major penalties handed out. Scott alone had 27 penalty minutes for the game, while eight (!!!!) other players had at least 15 penalty minutes assessed against them. In total, the game saw 205 minutes worth of penalties called. 100
Again, this was in a preseason game. God I love hockey.
