San Francisco 49ers: A.J. Jenkins not a lock to make roster

When the San Francisco 49ers selected A.J. Jenkins with the 30th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the entire league was shocked. The wide receiver out of Illinois wasn’t expected to be picked until the late second or early third round. After an incredibly disappointing rookie season, word out of the Bay Area is that Jenkins may not even make roster in his second season.

A.J. JenkinsMatt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee believes Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams and Quinton Patton already have spots on the roster locked up. After that, it looks like Marlon Moore and Kassim Osgood both have a chance to make the team thanks to the contributions they can make on special teams. The team also just signed Austin Collie, but he has never been able to stay healthy before so expecting that to change now is probably a pipe dream. Still, that’s five receivers without Collie and Jenkins hasn’t even been mentioned.

Despite being healthy for all of the 2012 season, Jenkins was only active for three games and was only targeted once. He dropped the pass. So as a first-round pick he caught a grand total of zero passes during his rookie season.

Jenkins’ talent is undeniable. He’s quick, fluid running routs and can get to top speed quickly. That said, he’s been awful in training camp and offers zero value on special teams.

Would the 49ers actually cut a first-round pick just a year after drafting him? That seems like a stretch to me, but if Michael Crabtree was healthy it would seem the team would have no choice but to do so. Crabtree is out thanks to an torn Achilles’ tendon and if he plays at all in 2013 it won’t be until late in the season. That may save Jenkins.

Still the fact that Jenkins hasn’t even solidified a roster spot at this point in his career has to be troublesome for 49ers fans.

  1. Anthony Torres says:

The guy is a brick! Let him go.

  2. Andy Riegs says:

No worries, the Jets will take him.

  3. No team cuts a first round pick after one year… No matter how bad they are the upside is still there and you don’t give up after 1 year. Crabtree was considered a bust until last year I’m just saying either way his job is safe.
