Report: MLB to suspend Ryan Braun, Alex Rodriguez and others after All-Star break

Well, it appears Major League Baseball is finally going to do something about the Biogenesis clinic scandal. ESPN is reporting that the league plans to suspend Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and about 20 other players after next week’s All-Star break.

Ryan BraunMajor League Baseball started building cases against the players last month after Tony Bosch, the owner of the clinic began cooperating with investigators. To this point, the league has interviewed some players, including Braun in connection to what Bosch has told them.

Braun reportedly met with baseball officials on June 29 and refused to answer any questions about his connection to Bosch during that meeting. Meanwhile, Rodriguez has not been interviewed, but is expected to meet with officials within the week.

Commissioner Bud Selig’s office is now expected to suspend Braun and Rodriguez and a group of about 20 players at some point after the All-Star break. Reports have also said that the commissioner’s office was considering 100-game bans for Braun and Rodriguez as punishment for a second offense though neither player has been previously suspended. The argument for doing so would be that they (and some other players) committed multiple offenses by receiving performance-enhancing drugs, then lying about it.

Bosch and his attorneys have met with MLB officials repeatedly over the past month, turning over tons of documents to substantiate his connection to the players named in previous documents that had been obtained by investigators. There are no details as to what he has given baseball officials, but it expected to include phone, text, email and other records.

Not surprisingly, Braun had no comment when ESPN reached out to him.

Braun will return to the Brewers’ lineup Tuesday night after being activated from the disabled list on Monday. He hasn’t played since June 9 thanks to a thumb injury.
