Washington Nationals put Stephen Strasburg on disabled list

As was expected following his last start, the Washington Nationals have placed ace right-hander Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lat muscle in his back. The move was made after Strasburg was unable to make his scheduled bullpen session on Wednesday.

Stephen StrasburgStrasburg was removed from his start against the Atlanta Braves on Friday after two innings because of discomfort in his back. He claimed that his back had been bothering him while warming up for his past few starts but said he would feel fine once the games started.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson had the following to say about the injury:

“There’s still some tenderness and discomfort there. So we’re going to keep him off the mound for a few more days.”

So far this season Strasburg is 3-5 with a 2.54 ERA. He was 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA last season before the Nationals shut him down early because it was his first full season back following Tommy John surgery.

Strasburg joins fellow starting pitcher Ross Detwiler and outfielder Bryce Harper on the disabled list.

Those injuries have come at a terrible time for the Nationals as they have struggled to a 29-29 record entering play Wednesday night. They currently sit 7.5 games out of first place in the National League East, well behind the streaking Atlanta Braves.

Nationals fans had better pray Strasburg figures out a way to stay healthy, because the 24-year-old already has a long injury history in less than four major league seasons.
