Colorado Rockies: Troy Tulowitzki breaks rib, out four to six weeks

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left the team’s game against the Washington Nationals on Thursday to have an MRI on his right side. Tests revealed the All-Star has a broken rib and he is likely going to miss four to six weeks as a result.

Troy TulowitzkiRockies manager Walt Weiss claimed Tulowitzki had been sore for “about a week” but aggravated the injury on Thursday when he tried to make a diving play on an Ian Desmond single. He was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the eighth.

Tulowitzki made an all-out dive for Desmond’s hit up the middle and was able to stop the ball, but couldn’t make a play. Afterwards, he was visibly shaken up and took his time getting to his feel. Josh Rutledge will likely be called up from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster.

The 28-year-old Tulowitzki is having an MVP-caliber season so far in 2013. He is hitting .347 with 16 home runs, 51 RBIs and 41 runs. He has a .413 on-base percentage and a 1.048 OPS. He will hit the disabled list in the top five of all three Triple Crown categories in the National League.

The Rockies are currently in third place in the National League West and sit 2.5 games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks. Losing Tulowitzki for any length of time would be a blow to the team, but being without him for a month or more could kill the Rockies’ playoff chances. Especially considering Colorado’s schedule includes 16 games against division rivals between now and the All-Star break.
