Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young is in the middle of a Charlie Sheen-level meltdown and it doesn’t seem likely to stop any time soon. On Tuesday Young’s father Richard claimed his son suffers from a mental health disorder and needs help.
Titus Young was arrested on Friday in California for the third time in a week for allegedly breaking into a home. He has been charged with attempted burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Less than a week earlier Young was arrested in Riverside County on suspicion of driving under the influence, then was arrested the same day for trying to take his car from a tow yard.
Richard Young told The Detroit News that he took his son out for coffee on Friday and that Titus seemed happy and was laughing. But later that day Titus drove off and disappeared. Obviously, he then went to break into that home (allegedly) later in the day.
He then said that his son has been prescribed the antidepressant Seroquel, which is used to treat bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.
Here’s what Richard Young had to say about his son:
“I just hope they just forgive Titus because this ain’t none of Titus; it wasn’t none of his fault. I look at my son right now, I don’t see my son. That’s not my son. I know my son.”
Richard Young also said he could not remember the name of the disorder that his son suffers from but said it is caused when the brain is compressed into the front of a person’s skull. He claims his son changed after suffering a concussion during his rookie season in 2011. The Lions never listed Young as having a concussion that season.
Young’s father then claimed the young receiver hasn’t been taking his medication and could be better if he did.
Titus Young was released in February after two average on-field seasons, but a ton of turmoil off the field and in the locker room. He has 81 receptions in 26 career games.
Let’s hope whatever happens that Titus Young gets his life together, because right now it’s headed in a terrible direction.
