Aaron Rodgers signs record-breaking contract extension

Aaron Rodgers finally gave the Packers the thumbs up on a new contract extension.

If there’s one player that’s earned a contract extension over the past couple of seasons, it’s been Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

According to multiple reports, Rodgers signed a contract extension with the Packers this afternoon that will make him the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL.

It is a five-year deal worth $110 million, that will keep Rodgers in Green Bay through the 2019 season.

It’s not a surprise move for Green Bay, as it was simply a matter of when, not if this would get done. Rodgers has outperformed the current three-year, $27.75 million dollar extension he signed that was scheduled to take him through the 2014 season.

Over the past three seasons, Rodgers has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 12,860 yards, with 112 touchdowns against just 25 interceptions. He led the league in passer rating each of the past two seasons, was named the 2011 Most Valuable Player and led the Packers to a 25-16 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel recently estimated that Rodgers’ annual contract would be somewhere between $23 and $25 million dollars per year. That would outpace the six-year, $120.6 million contract that Joe Flacco recently inked with Baltimore, and well as the five-year, $100 million deal Drew Brees signed with New Orleans in 2012. It appears that Rodgers’ actual deal will be slightly more team-friendly than initially anticipated.

This a move that the Packers have been preparing for and structuring their entire business model to accommodate, so there should be no reason for Packers fans to fret. The game’s best quarterback will be wearing green and gold in Titletown for years to come.

Glad to hear that. I live in CA, but became a fan of the packers when Rodgers became starting quarterback and good because he went the CAL-Berkeley. It is great to see the good guys come out on top for a change and ones who do not have a super ego etc..
he seems like a genuine nice guy and a good team player. I have to root for the Chargers, Saints, Bears, Packers. Too bad chargers cannot get/keep good players and instead keep the stupid executives who make awful decisions. I am glad to see the management for the Packers have a nice head on their shoulders and congrats with Rodgers as quarterback for many years.
