NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 Preview and TV Schedule

The 2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament hasn’t had nearly as many surprises as the men’s tourney, but the opening weekend saw plenty of good games, topped off by Delaware overcoming an 8-point halftime deficit to upset North Carolina, thanks in large part to 33 points and 8 rebound from the Blue Hens’ All-American Elena Delle Donne.

e5a690d064e3f9171a1c3798e8ffa611All of the 1 and 2 seeds have advanced without much trouble. Top seed Connecticut has dispatched of its opponents by an average margin of 50.5 points. Baylor, Notre Dame, and Stanford—and their respective stars Brittney Griner, Skylar Diggins, and Chiney Ogwumike—also defeated their first two opponents with ease.

All four 3 seeds, on the other hand, went down in the second round at the hands of 6 seeds.

Twelfth-seeded Kansas is the closest thing this year’s women’s tourney has to a Cinderella team. The Jayhawks started strong this season, rising as high as #20 in the rankings, before struggling in conference play and spending much of February and March on the bubble.

But Kansas’ run shouldn’t surprise anyone who paid attention to last year’s tournament. The 2012 Jayhawks advanced to the round of 16 by upsetting sixth-seeded Nebraska and third-seeded Delaware. This year’s Kansas squad upset Colorado and South Carolina behind the senior trio of Carolyn Davis, Angel Goodrich, and Monica Engelman.
