What’s ‘Love’ Got To Do With It? A Brief History of Tennis’ Strange, Illogical Scoring System

The NFL’s decision to take a week off each year between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl allows us one weekend in late January when we can focus on tennis.

This weekend, the first weekend since August with no football (unless you count the Pro Bowl, and I don’t), will see the finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will play for his fourth Aussie Open title against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray in the men’s draw. Last year’s champion Victoria Azarenka faces Li Na for the women’s title.

In men’s doubles the Bryan twins, Bob and Mike, from the United States will play for their 13th Grand Slam title against Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci already won the women’s doubles championship.

Sports fans who have spent the fall and winter watching games where each score has a set value and where score is kept by adding these values can take a break from reason and enjoy a sport whose means of scorekeeping defies logic.

In a game of tennis the first player to score four points wins, provided that the player has a two-point advantage over his or her opponent. But you never see a tennis player win a game 4–0 or 5–3. Instead of keeping score with whole numbers, tennis uses “love,” “15,” “30,” “40,” “deuce,” “advantage,” and “game.”

If you wanted scorekeeping to be easy, you should have played soccer.

If you wanted scorekeeping to be easy, you should have played soccer.

For those of you who don’t watch much tennis, here are the basics:

  • The first point a player scores in a game is “15,” the second is “30,” and the third is “40.” The fourth point wins the game.
  • The first player to win six games wins the set, and the first player to win two sets wins the match (except in men’s Grand Slam tournaments, where the winner must win three sets).
  • A game tied at “40” is called “deuce.” If player A scores the first point after deuce, he or she has the “advantage.” If he or she scores the next point, he or she wins the game. If player B scores the next point, the game goes back to deuce.

No one knows for sure how this bizarre scoring system developed.

When the Baltimore Sun asked tennis great Andre Agassi in 1998 about the origins of tennis’s scorekeeping method he said, “It was invented to cause frustration to those who chose to play.”

A Game of Palms

Though the game of tennis that we know today has its roots in late Victorian England, some version of the game has been played since Medieval times.

Tennis’s most prominent ancestor was a French game called jeu de paume (that’s “palm game” or “game of palm” in English), which French monks were playing as early as the 11th century. King Henry VIII is said to have taken his jeu de paume game very seriously, and Shakespeare mentioned the sport in Henry V. (“When we have match’d our rackets to these balls, We will in France, by God’s grace, play a set.”)

Originally jeu de paume players hit the ball back and forth across the net with their bare hands. As the game evolved, players used gloves then bats then racquets.

Jeu de paume, known by some today as “real tennis” or “royal tennis,” remains similar to regular tennis (which jeu de paume aficionados refer to as “lawn tennis”) but is played on walled courts of variable length and width.

Many tennis rules and traditions have their roots in jeu de paume and are therefore several centuries old, too old for their origins to be documented.

It is likely that tennis scores of “15,” “30,” and “40” have something to do with the clock: Much as 60 minutes is a complete rotation on a clock, a score of 60 was a complete tennis game. Players advanced to 60 in increments of 15, quarters of an hour.

Bud Collins, guru of tennis writing and broadcasting, writes in his Tennis Encyclopedia:

The quartered face of a clock seems the likely source of the game, and point scores — 15, 30 — but why 40 instead of 45? Was it a cuckoo clock? Probably modified over time. Nobody really knows.

Anyone who can tell time on an analog clock recognizes the significance of 15, 30, and 45, which is why tennis novices find the “40” so jarring.

The best explanation for the third point appearing less valuable than the first two is that “40” was an abbreviated way of saying “45” that caught on over time. “Fifteen” and “thirty” each have two syllables; “forty-five” has three. Saying “forty” saves a syllable.

Wikipedia has a different theory about why “40” replaced “45”:

To make the score stay within the “60” ticks on the clock face, the 45 was changed to 40. Therefore, if both players have 40, the first player to score receives ten and that moves the clock to 50. If the player scores a second time before the opponent is able to score, they are awarded another ten and the clock moves to 60. The 60 signifies the end of the game. However, if a player fails to score twice in a row, then the clock would move back to 40.

It’s an interesting theory, and it makes a certain amount of sense. But, like everything else Wikipedia has to say about the history of tennis scoring, it is followed by the dreaded “[citation needed]” and is not substantiated by other sources.

Tennis’s system of grouping games into sets and sets into matches also comes from its French ancestor.

This ancient means of keeping score allows for the possibility that a player could win a match without winning the majority of points, or even games. (For instance, in a 7–5, 1–6, 7–5 match, the winning player will have won 15 games; the losing player will have won 16.)

Love Hurts, Love Scars

Counting 15-30-40 is odd, but perhaps not as strange as using “love” to mean zero. (Collins in his encyclopedia writes, “How can you take seriously anything in which love means nothing?”)

The most common explanation for this terminology is that the English word “love” sounds similar to the French l’oeuf, meaning “egg” (or “the egg”). And a zero looks a lot like an egg.

The people at Oxford Dictionaries are skeptical of this theory and say that it is more likely that “love” comes from “to play for the love of the game,” that is, to play for nothing.

Conventional wisdom says that “deuce,” the word for when a game is tied and the first player to score two consecutive points wins, comes from the French word for “two,” deux. BBC Learning English says that deuce derives specifically from the French phrase à deux du jeu, which literally means “at two from the game.”

The One Scoring Innovation in Nearly a Millennium of Tennis

While the fundamentals of tennis scoring have survived for centuries, the modern era introduced one significant tweak.

In 1958 James Van Alen, founder of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, introduced the tiebreaker.

Much as a tennis player must win a game by two points, he or she must win a set by two games. Since the player who serves during a game has an advantage, sets involving evenly matched players have the potential to go on for a long time. (Player A serves game 1 and wins; player B serves game 2 and wins; player A serves game 3 and wins; player B serves game 4 and wins. No player ever gains a two-game advantage.)

Alen suggested that, when a set is tied at 6 games apiece, players should play a special tiebreaker game. In a tiebreaker, players alternate serves (player A, player B, player B, player A, player A, etc.). The first player to score 7 points, provided that he or she has a two-point advantage, wins the tiebreaker and the set. Tiebreaker games don’t use “15,” “30,” or “40,” but instead count by ones.

The U.S. Open adopted the tiebreaker in 1970. Other tournaments followed suit until the innovation took hold across the sport.

In some major tournaments—such as the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the Davis Cup—a tiebreaker is not used to decide the final set of a singles match. For this reason, you will occasionally see a third or fifth set that lasts for hours.

John Isner of the United States and Nicolas Mahut of France famously played an 11-hour match in the first round at Wimbledon in 2010. The third and fourth sets ended with tiebreakers. But without a tiebreaker in the fifth, the set continued until Isner finally took a two-game advantage and won 70 games to 68.

No More of This Jeu de Paume Nonsense, Let’s Count by Ones

World Team Tennis (WTT), the coed professional tennis league in the United States that was founded in 1973, doesn’t use the traditional scoring system. Instead of “love,” “15,” “30,” and “40,” WTT uses the simpler 0, 1, 2 and 3.

WTT matches also don’t require players to win matches by two points. When a game is tied at 3, the next player (or doubles team) to score a point wins. No deuce.

WTT’s whole number scoring system has caught on about as well as World Team Tennis itself. (I say this not to disparage WTT, which is a fine league in which many of the game’s top players participate. But it’s fair to say that a lot of people don’t know that the WTT exists, and you probably won’t find a match on television unless you have the Tennis Channel. Fun fact: Elton John’s 1975 hit “Philadelphia Freedom” was inspired by the Philadelphia Freedoms, a WTT squad whose roster included John’s friend and tennis great Billie Jean King.)

* * * * *

Marcos Baghdatis: "Why is it '40' instead of '45'? That doesn't make any ?&%#$ sense!"

Marcos Baghdatis: “Why is it ’40’ instead of ’45’? That doesn’t make any ?&%#$ sense!”

The origins of tennis’s strange love/deuce/kind-of-but-not-quite-counting-by-15s scoring system are murky. But it has been around a long time and probably isn’t going anywhere. Even the tiebreaker, the only major modern-era scoring innovation, is more than a half century old.

Future generations of tennis players will have to set logic aside when keeping score because, you know, tradition.

And that’s OK.

There’s really no good reason to say “30–love” instead of “2–0,” but, to quote Collins again from his Tennis Encyclopedia, “even though people say the scoring system is confusing, even a child can figure it out after watching it for 30 seconds.”

  311. With almost everything that appears to be building throughout this particular subject material, a significant percentage of points of view tend to be quite refreshing. Nonetheless, I am sorry, because I can not give credence to your whole plan, all be it exhilarating none the less. It appears to everybody that your opinions are actually not entirely validated and in simple fact you are generally your self not totally confident of your point. In any case I did appreciate reading it.

  312. It must be hard not spending Christmas with your family… Although I can understand some people wouldn’t want to spend it with theirs. I hope you’ll have a great time though, with friends, because you deserve it! And I absolutely love that final picture of a Christmas tree! xx

  315. I’ve modified my actual camblog script recently, fixing some bugs (escaping ‘::’ in messages, fr’instance) and having it update my Twitter as well as my website. Much of that is dependent on various perl modules and somesuch, though, so I’ve decided to leave this example in its simplified state. It’s probably more useful for people to learn from this way.I imagine that most people these days are using facebook, flickr, ot twitpic for this sort of thing, besides.Anyway, if you are interested in learning more, just comment and I’ll help you when I am able.

  316. I don’t even know the rules and I’m mostly a beginner quilter so I just go with my gut and I experiment. I tell myself that not matter what I produce, it will be something that can warm a cold body and that’s worth something.

  320. Yep – totally agree. One of my cats was physically abused by his previous owner, who also had a female cat and, surprise, surprise, one day there were six cats, so they all got put in a box and dumped at a shelter. He picked us out when we went looking for a cat, and later when we got a kitten, he adopted it as his own. Years later they are still inseparable companions, and we wouldn’t be without our big gentle giant of a boy.

  321. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective.A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a great job with this. Also, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog!

  322. Shoot, who would have thought that it was that easy?

  367. If the only API available is a SOAP one (as it often the case in enterprise dev.) then what choice do you have?I’d say it’s 90% of environments that do use SOAP. The remaining 10% are the hip’n’cool places that use REST. And then you have the hassle of writing a REST client which is basically just a finite state machine (FSM) to perform autonomous navigation. That’s the dirty little secret of REST that almost everyone glosses over. Hint: If your REST client doesn’t autonomously navigate via the hypertext relations then it isn’t REST. It’s RPC that abuses HTTP.

  387. I agree that the creators of the website did a good job replicating part of Barnum’s famous museum, but they need to revaluate it and bring it into the 21st century. It may lose some of its historical accuracy during revamping, but right now it is in danger of losing its audience because it is so outdated.

  391. Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a tough time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

  392. As far as price, i think i could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else. It gets the job done though, considering that i have more room to put things since my TV isn’t on the floor anymore. It’s pretty sturdy, but i think it’ll get worn soon. I would only reccommend this product for short term use, and/or if you have a small TV.

There is only so much blood that can be sucked out of a stone. India and China over-populated themselves! How is STEALING from the retirement savings of HONEST LABOR of USA citizens supposed to help out the *poor* in those two countries?

(sorry-it's friday).Love your Lady Winter, what a fully-formed character she is, and Adage plays a good butler. For some reason, I had the Titantic quartet in my mind when you described the frozen-in-time players here. Personally, I didn't feel the need for possible salvation for the villager. Lady Winter completing her chess set was enough for me.

  498. This column is so, so right on the mark. As an employment law attorney who advises employers, I can confirm every bit of what R.J. Morris is saying. It’s so ironic – there are so many inaccurate and outmoded stereotypes about older workers, yet so many employers complain about the lack of work ethic, lack of loyalty, irresponsible habits, poor attendance, and tendency to quit on the part of some of their younger workers. Let’s get real – good employees are wherever you find them, but you must first open your eyes.

February 27, 2012 – 10:27 pm Well for the last few years I have been advising people to forget about what they think google wants and just focus on writing good original content that people want to read and the SERP’s will come. I still believe it is the only way forward. Sure H1′s H2′s, meta, page titles, etc. are all necessary but I find to many people get focused on short cuts and end up paying a price in the end for it.
