It is Week 15 and the New York Jets still have a shot to make the playoffs. Yes, this is the same team that played a 7-6 game against the Cardinals, with the only touchdown being thrown by Greg McElroy.
They take on the Titans tonight, who will try to play spoiler for the hopes of the Jets. They have been competitive most of the year, but just have not made the next step and closed out games.
New York Jets
The Jets are currently 6-7 and are two spots behind the Bengals for the last wild-card spot in the AFC. A win would tie them with Pittsburgh at 7-7, but they would lose the tiebreaker as Pittsburgh already beat them this season.
For the Jets to make the playoffs, they will have to first win their last three games to finish at 9-7. They would then need the Steelers to defeat the Bengals next week, and then have the Steelers lose their last game against the Browns. This is still likely as the Steelers have already beaten the Bengals once this season, and have lost to the Browns.
The Jets would then need the Bengals to lose their final game of the year against Baltimore, along with losing next week against Pittsburgh. It seems complicated but it really is not.
The team whose starting quarterback is without a touchdown pass since before Thanksgiving still has a chance to reach the postseason, and must start with a win over the lesser Titans.
Unfortunately for the Titans, they will not be playing for their playoff chances with their 4-9 record. After a 3-4 start, they have lost five of their last six with the only win coming against the Dolphins.
Their last three losses have come against their divisional opponents. Last week saw the Titans only lose by four to the Colts, but margins of defeat do not make fans in Tennessee feel any better.
Jake Locker must cut down his interceptions if the Titans are to beat the Jets. He has thrown multiple interceptions in each of his last three games, and only has one touchdown in each game. The last game he threw no interceptions was against Miami, which was the last game the Titans won.
It would seem impossible to say a month ago, but the Jets have momentum heading into this matchup. They have won two in a row while the Titans have lost three, and they will get the job done in Tennessee.
