Monday Night Football: Chicago Bears at San Francisco 49ers Preview and Prediction

Two of the top three teams in the NFC face off in San Francisco tonight where the 49ers will be hosting the Bears.

The 49ers are coming off a tie, which equals the worst way to end a game ever, last week against St. Louis. Chicago lost to Houston last week, and they lost Jay Cutler to a concussion in the process.

Jay Cutler will not play tonight after suffering a concussion against Houston. San Francisco will be without its starting signal caller as well.

That means that both teams will be without their respective starting quarterbacks, as Alex Smith also is out with a concussion. It will be interesting to see which team’s backup quarterback steps up, as Colin Kaepernick will go against Jason Campbell.

Chicago Bears

Chicago already has the second-worst passing offense in the league, so Cutler’s absence will do nothing to help that mark. Last week’s 13-6 loss against Houston snapped a six-game winning streak that extended all the way back to Week 3. They need a win tonight to stay in first in the NFC North, as the Packers are now 7-3.

Jason Campbell gets the start for the Bears, which will be the third team that he will have started for in his career, after the Redskins and Raiders. He will be going up against one of the top defenses in the league, and one that has only allowed twenty points or more four times this season.

The running game will be what keeps Chicago in this game. Michael Bush and Matt Forte have to improve from last week, where they only combined for 73 yards on 19 carries.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco had to settle for a tie last week against the Rams in a game that they easily could, and should, have won. It was their third divisional game in a row, after already defeating the Seahawks and the Cardinals. Alas, they could not complete the divisional sweep.

A tie essentially counts as half of a win, so a win for the 49ers in this game would give them a 1.5 game lead over the Seahawks in the NFC West. It is now a two-team race, so this margin should be noted as the season winds down.

Colin Kaepernick gets the start in this game, but it will not be his first time on the field this season. He has appeared in six games this season in which he has either thrown a pass or rushed the ball at least once. He saw his most action last week once Smith went down, as he threw for 117 yards and rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Bears-49ers Prediction

Both backup-quarterbacks-turned-starters are facing top defenses. Campbell has the experience, but Kaepernick has the better team around him, which will help him to win this game.
