Big Ten Picks: Week 11 Recap

The final weeks of the college football season are always the most exciting, as teams battle for a conference championship, national ranking spots and bowl eligibility.

After last Saturday, our picks contest has heated up a bit as well, as a perfectly picked slate by myself, and an off week by Kevin has pulled me to within seven games for the last stretch.

big-ten-10-picks-logoIt’s a long shot that I will come back, but hey, it’s sports and I am all about the underdog story. As December creeps up, Wisconsin will be playing for its second straight Big Ten championship, while Nebraska and Michigan continue to fight for the Legends division spot.

Minnesota has locked up bowl eligibility, While Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State and Iowa all have work left to do if they want to reach a bowl this season.

It should be a fun final two weeks of the season. While we wait for next week, take a look back at our picks:

Wisconsin vs. Indiana

  • Kevin’s Pick – Wisconsin 45-30
  • Dustin’s Pick – Wisconsin 27-19
  • Final Score – Wisconsin 62-14

A big game for the Hoosiers, on their home turf? You’d think that would have been enough to get a strong performance out of IU. Those close game we all anticipated was left in the locker room. Instead, the Badgers had a career day rushing the football and shattered Indiana’s hopes at a Big Ten Championship appearance.

Purdue vs. Iowa

  • Kevin’s Pick – Iowa 16-13
  • Dustin’s Pick – Purdue – 21-14
  • Final Score – Purdue 27-24

This was a very ugly game, as both Kevin and I predicted in our Saturday selections. Finally, Purdue was able to get back in the win column, while Iowa is still trying to figure things out. Both teams are two wins away from bowl eligibility with only two weeks left.

#24 Northwestern vs. Michigan

  • Kevin’s Pick – Northwestern 35-31
  • Dustin’s Pick – Michigan 42-24
  • Final Score – Michigan 38-31

Kevin knew this was going to be a close game and had Northwestern not collapsed again, he would have picked the right team. As it stands, Michigan got the victory on its home turf and the Wildcats are still trying to figure out how to win some of those big, close games.

Minnesota vs. Illinois

  • Kevin’s Pick – Illinois 23-20
  • Dustin’s Pick – Minnesota 17-16
  • Final Score – Minnesota 17-3

Probably the worst game of the afternoon on Saturday. It was an ugly contest from the beginning, but Minnesota was able to get the job done and are now bowl eligible for the first time under Jerry Kill’s watch. Even though the Gophers haven’t been that impressive, Minnesota making a bowl game this year is just a good story for the conference. In other news, Illinois is bad. Really bad.

Penn State vs. #16 Nebraska

  • Kevin’s Pick – Nebraska 24-21
  • Dustin’s Pick – Nebraska 28-25
  • Final Score – Nebraska 32-23

Nebraska’s win keeps them in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten Legends division, and this was a huge win for the Huskers. Nebraska is just two weeks away from making its first appearance in the Big Ten championship game in only its second season in the conference. Penn State, on the other hand, has seemed to slow down a bit from that successful stretch they had midway through the season.

Season Totals

  • Kevin – 68
  • Dustin – 61
